Seriously? When I was a child, anyone older than about 20 and less than about 80 was amongst the collection of 'grown ups'. None of them were inherently any greater or lesser in stature.

My 7 year old is ridiculously excited about Peter Capaldi, he loves the way he looks, loves his voice and loves his stare.

More than that, the idea of an older doctor and the 50th coverage has turned him onto classic who, and his most treasured present from santa was a sea devil action figure and dvd of The Sea Devils.

Kids are, on the whole, interested in character and stories, not so much pretty boy looks

Obviously Capaldi's age isn't an issue in the slightest. I still have problems envisaging him playing a likeable Doctor - the man with charm, warmth and charisma you want to run away with - but that's mostly because I've personally never seen Capaldi play those sorts of roles and he does, admittedly, have a harsh look to him. I've always seen him playing people you're really not supposed to like! It was rather different with David and Matt because they'd had those very likeable roles pre-DW (Casanova and the Sally Lockheart Mysteries) so it was easier to picture them playing him.

Capaldi always comes across as very pleasant himself so hopefully he can bring that to the role. People keep going on about the fact that they want this darker and more serious Doctor but I don't think that's really the interesting part about Capaldi's version. We know he can do that! I want to see how he plays the slightly daft but endearing alien part of it

Exactly, all we need now is for Clackers to post his usual rubbish and this trollfest of a thread will be complete.

I think he will play the doctor very much like CE a very dry sense of humour. Capt Kirk/Picard are still really popular and both were hardly young still playing the roles. Glad they went for a more mature actor after MS they need the balance. His acting in COE was just spellbinding anything like that his age wont matter a damn.

It took me a while to figure out what COE meant (CHILDREN OF EARTH).

I like inadvertent guessing games

Don't forget a certain 'Of course the new series is not canon and has no relevance to Classic Who repeated x 100000 times' poster for a full house of horrors!

Indeed! I know who you mean, though it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if all three are the same person....

Is this some kind of parody thread?
Are we forgetting the majority of the classic Doctors were "old" in comparison to NuWho?
Matt Smith is the exception, not the rule.

And supposing for one minute in an alternate reality that Capaldi is axed, he doesn't need panto.

As for the bald joke, he has a full head of hair and more than Eccleston had.

Oh yes. That final shot of him closing the door still gives me chills.

Yeah but if you want to quote the T&Cs...calling people trolls and arses who post inane shite is also against the rules.

This is where I have the opposite view. We've seen plenty of "slighty daft but endearing" versions of the Doctor - in a sense, that's old hat. I'm far more interested in the darker more serious part of the Doctor's personality that I'm sure Capaldi will bring out.

I agree. I took my 9 year old son to the cinema for the 50th Anniversary Special and he loved Capaldi's stare. He can't wait to see him as the Doctor.

not when its blatantly true, is inane and clearly inflammatory (history supports this) rubbish and they are making themselves look stupid. My post was accurate!

if he does make kids switch off then they aren't real Dr Who fans especially if Peter turns out to be a good doctor. Its about time we had someone different.

Yeah, because when I seven I certainly didn't think that Tom Baker was the greatest thing since sliced bread - what with him being "old" and all.

I suppose secretly kids despise Father Christmas and their Grandparents - them being right old codgers.

I do get what you mean but I think that should be part of his personality too. Even CE - undoubtedly the most serious of the recent Doctors - could be daft and likeable. It needs the balance. Capaldi is a really nice guy but every character I've seen him play has been cold and unlikeable (although interesting!) and I wouldn't want that in the Doctor. Not that I think he can't do it at all, I just can't imagine what it'll be like at the mo because I've never seen him do that.
