Just watching Girls Aloud - Ten tour on MTV Live and I'm quite impressed that they are singing the entire show live. (I was at the concert, but forgot how good it actually was). None of them are the best singers, Something New sounded a bit 'shouted', but it was fun, it wasn't bad so to speak, and it involved dancing.

15 years ago groups like Steps would mime an entire concert yet still received a Brit award for the biggest grossing tour at the time. So it's nice to see pop groups are moving on from this. No doubt many acts still mime, Britney for example. And some remind you between every song that they're 100% live (Gaga!).

So ultimately, well done to many manufactured pop acts for actually doing the job as it should be done.

Who just shouldn't though? I have to say I'm going to see Katy Perry in May but after that X factor performance of Unconditionally I think I would forgive her for miming the power ballads at least!

It is very hard to sing live with good vocals when performing energetic dance routines unless you are trained in musical theatre.

It's a sad state of affairs that you have to congratulate a band for actually singing live. I would have thought that the minimum requirement of any singer is that they can actually sing!

Sorry to disagree - whilst I really like GA too, I'm not sure they do sing entire shows live I always get the impression some parts are pre-recorded

Sugababes performed live, id say the majority of the time.

GA was definitely dubbed for DVD/TV but the majority do.

Tragic isn't it.

It's much easier to name acts who mime. Very, very few pop acts these days lip sync.

In fact, the only ones I can think of right now who are still known for miming are Britney Spears (obviously) and The Saturdays (MOSTLY they sing live, but I'm almost certain that Frankee and Mollie mime their solos sometimes).

I know that Alexandra Burke and Leona Lewis often sound better in their live performances than in studio recordings. They are both very good live and don't mime unless forced to by illness which could damage their vocals.

A lot of pop acts use pre-recorded vocals now though, so it can be more difficult to tell who is miming and who isn't. Pre-recorded vocals are different as they are deliberately recorded to sound "live" complete with breathing noises, tuning imperfections etc. to make it convincing when the act is actually miming or whispering underneath the pre-recorded vocal.

Pop performances require dance routines in most cases, so the weaker singers usually struggle with this. However there are acts that are very good at singing and dancing live, Beyoncé, Alexandra Burke, Nicole Scherzinger and Justin Timberlake are examples.

I love that performance. Robyn gives so much in her performances haha!

And like they said above, I give props to someone like P!nk when it comes to performances. Performing acrobatics, while in a harness and being constantly spun around yet still singing live is quite a task. She's one of those artists you know you can rely on to vocally deliver.

Singing live is one thing, how many of these DJ/Producer acts like Guetta, Example, Chase and Status etc play live!? It looks like you only need to step a cd into a laptop and away you go!

Kylie has always sung live and note perfect for 2 hours too. She's also one of the few acts that can sing and dance at the same time. She said once that it was all about the breathing (timing wise).

I agree with you. Pop acts who sing live are getting praise for doing what vocalists from every other genre do as a matter of course

Yup, Kylie always sings live on her tours and damn good she is too, especially at the Anti Tour show I went to. Jessie J sang completely live when I saw her in 2011. Rihanna sings live over lots of pre-recorded backing tracks for the upbeat numbers but completely live for the ballads, as does Beyonce. Girls Aloud definitely sang live (some of it quite ropey, I have to admit) on their Ten tour but were helped with backing tracks on the choruses. Pink is a great live singer and when I saw Madonna she sang most of the songs live, just a few were mimed when she was all out dancing or doing acrobatics! Oh and MKS were brilliant live a few months ago. A bit of backing on a couple of songs but the rest was completely live and they all sang brilliantly.

But if you want to hear some truly amazing live vocals go to a Charlotte Church gig. Her music is a lot more leftfield/Avant Garde these days and might not appeal to everyone but wow she is amazing to listen to.

Sounds like a non too subtle backing track helping her along.

To be fair, I think most people do sing live these days. I think it's quite rare to see someone mime, as there is always quite a lot of backlash over it. I agree with the people who said it's a sad state of affairs that singers get applauded for singing live though.

It is very hard to sing live with good vocals when performing energetic dance routines unless you are trained in musical theatre.
Disagree. That's just an easy excuse for people who aren't that great vocally, in my opinion.
