I thin it varies store to store, but you can monitor your own shop and work it out. Our big Asda does 2 reductions, one around 4pm in time for the evening rush and a second further reduction on anything that's not sold around 7pm. That can sometimes be excellent, and I've scooped up salmon fillets for 80p etc.

Can you tell us what you would normally spend on a meal, so we can get a better idea of budget to make suggestions with?

ETA: is it 3-4 adults?

2Kg of meat for £12 is really cheap!!

Depends what you income is surely, at a little over £6 an hour that would take 2 hours work to buy it certainly more than we can afford. We have about £30 for two of us including all personal items and cleaning stuff too !

I make my own mince at home from bits of meat I find, it's so much better than buying it pre-packaged

Thats three silly answers on three food threads - mildly funny but silly.

I bought a frozen leg of lamb a few months back and oven slow roasted it.
The amount of meat was astonishing - enough for several different meals, some to freeze and then I had stock from the remains.
Earlier on someone mentioned a slow cooker (PCJ?) - they are excellent for tenderising cheaper joints of meat in casseroles, curries etc and making enough to freeze up as extra portions.

That guy is the main offender of sticking his oar in on any ready made meal threads informing us that he makes his own. He even butted in saying that he makes his own fizzy drinks.

If I hound his every single post with I MAKE MY OWN, IT'S BETTER then he might realise just what an annoying person he is. Looking for respect and compliments where there aren't any. Nobody cares that he makes his own fizzy drinks and pizzas.

Why not, keeps the roads tidy too

TBH I thought that was what was being advocated because the idea of finding bits of meat sort of sounds like either he has some odd home with bits of meat hanging around the house or he is picking it up off the roadsides.

Nothing wrong with road kill I guess but not something everyone would want to do.

Couple of things. As many people have mentioned the more 'whole' your joints the cheaper its likely to be. E.g. a leg of lamb or whole chicken is likely to be cheaper per kg of usable meat, and don't forget bones make a great stock. If you struggle to butcher meat then there are plenty of courses available or check youtube.

Cheaper cuts are often more tasty, just need more cooking.

Bulk out meat with veggies. Healthier for you and cheaper.

Frozen meat often contains added water and salt. I've seen cheap frozen chicken where meat content was 60%!

Do you care for the welfare of the animals, you know that if you buy chicken for £3 per kg that its most likely to have spent its life in a cage.

Buy in bulk when sales are on. Of course you will need a chest or large freezer for this.

Whilst I agree welfare is important when it comes down to a choice between the chicken and my family eating I am afraid the chicken doesn't fare so well. So the frozen Tesco chicken will continue to be bought.

Cheaper cuts are fine but even cheaper cuts are more expensive than the £3.99 per kilo chicken breast and no waste and less fuel to cook it too.

sorry, but I don't think meat is necessarily dearer than the above.

if you want the least expensive proper meat, then some stewing steak or mince, with carrots, and mashed potatoes won't be any or much dearer than the frozen stuff, and will be far tastier and much better quality.

roll out a bit of frozen pastry to make a pie crust to go with it.

I expect stuff like liver can be picked up cheaply as well, about £1 a pound. liver and onions is excellent.

cheese and eggs can replace meat as an inexpensive alternative as well.

Pot, kettle.

Most of us are well used to Stud and are no longer irritated by the silly make-your-own obsession. You, on the other hand, are starting to grate. Once or twice was mildly funny, but you need to find something more constructive to do than hounding another FM.

It depends on what you buy. Mince for example is much better quality than the supermarket stuff and normally costs less too. Sausages are probably about the price same as the £2.99/2 for £5 ones you get in all the super markets, but of a vastly better quality.

However things like steaks or joints of meat do tend to cost a bit more, however again the quality is vastly better.

We are lucky as we are have Turners near to us who some may remember from dragons den. My goodness they do a good sausage!
