I am about to purchase an property which has a BT line. I have feeling still connected and I am going to have to transfer the account into my name from the old owner. How do I do this and do keep the current number?

It is very likely that the account was cancelled by the old owner. Who may also have transferred the account and the number to their new home (if in the same area). So there is no guarantee you will keep the number previously allocated to that line.

You will basically be getting a new account of your own. And it can be with any telecoms provider you like as long as they serve your area, you don't have to go with BT or whoever the previous owners used.

All you need do is contact your chosen service provider and tell them you want to pay them some money each month to have a phone line.

If they were with BT the phone line will still have a dial tone when you pick it up after it is cancelled when you try to dial a number though it will say the number is not recognised. This means it is cancelled.

You can dial 17070 and this will give you the number for the line in the house. This is subject to change though if you sign up with BT or any other company.
