I want one, I just can't justify the money for a new console when I'm still playing my Wii U a lot (Mario 3D is brilliant and am looking forward to Mario Kart). I think these two games will see me out until the fall.

But I wouldn't mind an Xbox One for some more adult games, anybody have any idea when the price goes down?

Soon

I suppose if they drop Kinect and and the disk drive (rumoured) then they could drop the price to as low as £299.99 retail, although i'd expect them to be looking to match the ps4's price.

I'd expect some sort of announcement at e3.

Senior publishing source confirms new, cheaper Xbox One release for 2014

Microsoft will release a cheaper Xbox One this year, a well-respected source has told VG247, apparently confirming this week’s leaks out of Redmond.

white xbox one

Microsoft has told trusted publishing partners that it will release a new model Xbox One before the end of the year, a senior source has confirmed to VG247.

Although the source was unable to confirm that the system will be disc-less and feature a bluetooth adaptor, the new console will be priced cheaper than the current $499 model.

Upon release, Microsoft would likely drop the price of the current Xbox One model, placing it in the same price point as Sony’s PlayStation 4.

New hardware isn’t the only leak from Microsoft this week, with reports suggesting Halo 2 Anniversary Edition will be released on November 11, complete with a beta for Halo 5.

Although Microsoft isn’t commenting on the rumours, it isn’t taking these leaks lightly – the firm is reportedly looking to get legal on someone’s ass, adding fuel to the fire.

Others aren't convinced about the drive-less model rumour -

http://www.vg247.com/2014/01/30/xbox...s-in-on-rumor/

Last night, a rumor surfaced that Microsoft was preparing to release a white 1TB Xbox One at retail, without a disc drive. Today, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has called the idea “dumb, dumb, dumb,” yet has also dismissed it as a complete rumor.

(...)

Speaking in an industry note, Pachter said if even true in the slightest, it would alienate not only retailer customers, but comsumers as well.

“If this rumor is true, it is one of the dumbest ideas of all time,” he said. “It would alienate GameStop and other retailers, and it would demonstrate that Microsoft can afford to release a 1TB Xbox One at $399 with essentially the same production cost as the $499 model with a 500GB HDD and a Blu-ray drive.

“That would likely cause gamers to believe that the model with a Blu-ray drive is overpriced, or would cause them to believe that Microsoft is greedy.

“I have three words for this idea—dumb, dumb, dumb.”

Pachter said he respects the people at Microsoft “immensely” and that they are “far from dumb.”

“I don’t actually believe the rumor,” he stated.

Yeah, it's Pachter. But he is right sometimes!

Thanks lads.

Interesting. Although I'm not sure if I'm down with no disc drive as I hoped to be able to sell my Blu Ray player if I got an Xbox One to free up space on my glass cabinet. Also, I tend to put my games on eBay once completed... Over five years we are talking about £1000 worth of games..

One thing for sure is that E3 this year is going to be a very interesting time for gaming fans. We could see some major changes from Microsoft as well as some massive exclusives announced from Sony.

I like the idea of a Kinectless, discless console to have as a second console upstairs.(although i would much rather have a ps4 up there at this point in time)

I hope that MS don't go down the Kinect-less console route. Regardless of what some sectors of the internet think, i think it's a great piece of tech that definitely has a place in the future of games if utilized correctly (and using voice/hand commands to control Netflix and other stuff without a remote is great!), but if MS essentially ditch it so soon after launch it'll just be doomed to a life of obscurity as developers wont use it. If every console comes with one then the developers know that they can utiilize it in the knowledge that everyone with an X1 has one.

I'm all for allowing developers to use the Kinect allocated power for graphics and better performance if they aren't planning on using the Kinect, but ditching it would be a bad move from MS if you ask me, not least because it'd piss off the early adopters. I hope they stay committed to the Kinect.

I'd imagine that the price of the X1 will come down by around £50-£80 around Christmas to bring it in line with the current PS4 cost. I can't really see the PS4 coming down in price that quickly though considering how well it seems to be selling.

I wouldn't pay any attention to those rumours that came out of NeoGaf the other day though, while some of the rumours that were supposedly "leaked" the other day are no doubt based on fact (stuff like a white X1 and release dates for Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break have been rumoured for months already), other stuff like an X1 without a disc drive for $100 cheaper are likely to be total bullshit, especially since the thread on NeoGaf promptly disappeared when the "leaker" posted a picture of a Titanfall branded X1 that featured a differently designed console on the box to the console that the box was sat next to, not to mention the utterly daft suggestion that Halo 2 Anniversary would come with ports of Halo 3 and 4 (i'm sure MS plan on milking us for "Anniversary" versions of those games too, so why release them as part of the H2 package).

The price of digital downloads needs a huge drop for discless to work. Now and then you get the download version for the same price as retail version but retail prices are now dropping. So DD needs to keep up or a discless console is doomed to fail.

MS are understandably angry about the leaks. The news that a cheaper model is on the way could make a number of people hold off on buying Xbox One for now.

The fact that they could be making changes so soon after launch isn't great for their image either, and that's already taken quite a beating recently.

Trouble is we have seen nothing yet that justifies Kinect as a mandatory peripheral. I agree with what you are saying that Kinect has to be shipped with every console to stand a chance that developers will use it. But so far very few have, MS seem to just be hoping developers come up with the great ideas for Kinect in gaming. With Kinect playing such a large role in Xbox 1 MS should have already had a number of tech demos showing how much fun Kinect can be and offering ideas for developers on how to implement it. The fact is MS seem to have hardly any ideas of how to integrate Kinect into games. If MS cant come up with some compelling software to really sell Kinect by E3 they really should start to think about dropping it as a standard part of the package.

So far from PS4 and Xbox 1 the only piece of camera software I am mildly interested in playing is the flicking robots out of the controller and kicking them on the floor thing (Which looks like a 2minutes and I am done gimmick) which shows just how poor of a job MS have done creating software for Kinect.

IMHO the ball is squarely in Microsoft court here, either they create the software to justify the inclusion of Kinect in every system or just release a kinectless Xbox 1.

Xbox Fitness has been worth the kinect alone for my family. My wife uses it regularly and loves how it shows your heart rate and pressure points and how accurate it is.

Microsoft missed a trick there, they should have advertised Xbox Fitness big time after christmas rather than the constant 'Jump in' adverts we see all the time. They could have shifted a few more consoles me thinks.

Anyone who buys an Xbox One without a disc is basically giving Microsoft complete control of what they pay for their games, completely reliant on what they decide to charge you. Good luck with that!

They wouldn't over charge, that would be suicide and i don't think even Microsoft are that stupid.

Some of the games they have released so far have been at a good price; Ryse, Forza and DR3 for example were £44.99 at launch which is pretty decent and even better than retail if you consider that £50 Vouchers can be bought for around £40 on various websites.

As mentioned before, a disc-less console will only work if the price of games stays competitive.

Perhaps they did launch too early in a panic to beat Sony and this discless console was their original intention?

I absolutely believe that to be the case.

I think they wanted to go download only, but only added a BD drive when they realised that not everyone's ready for that. That's where all of the DRM nonsense came from.

Casuals have already picked up the Wii Fit years ago and don't see the need of spending over £400 for another fitness console.

But of course you know more about marketing than the folks working there. They should hire you. Genius!

So going by your logic no company should spending money on marketing their product if years ago an inferior version is already out there which people have?

The casuals are fickle. Just how look badly the Wii U is doing. They are not even fussed over Wii Fit U.

Do you think Microsoft were wrong and in fact should have pushed the Xbox fitness more? How could they not have seen it!

No but they could have run a mix of ads showing off it's full features, one of which is Xbox Fitness. Especially after Christmas and the New Year when all those celebrity fitness DVD's come out and gym memberships shoot straight up.

By running ads showing Xbox Fitness it may have help a few husbands convince their wife's that it's worth the money "Look love, I can play games and you can get fit."
