I've signed up to BT infinity 1 unlimited just phone and broadband.
BT are connecting me on the 21 Feb. Had an email from AOL within an hour of signing up to BT saying my new provider had requested cancellation and the transfer would be done within 5 working days.
Now does that mean I will be with out the internet until the 21 Feb ?

Did you use a Migration Code (MAC) to transfer to BT? If so, this is probably a glitch from AOL, and your service will continue until the day the engineer arrives, where you will experience some downtime for a few hours.

If you didn't use a Migration code, then BT will have requested AOL to cease service on your line, meaning that it will be disconnected in 5 working days.

Yes I used the MAC code supplied by AOL... So I hope it's a glitch.

I know i'm a little behind on the times here, but this happened to me but my AOL connection was still live right up until BT connected me, i hope this is the case with you

Still got my AOL connection so I take it, it will just change over when I get my infinity on the 21st..

I think they would mention that on their website, they were quite clear that you can leave it all up to BT when changing, as I am from Sky to Infinity.

Be very annoyed if I'm cut off until 22nd Feb which is my date.

The OP's email from AOL was probably generated because their system is out of date.

If you switch from one ADSL provider to another, this is done within 5 working days as the email stated.

FTTC transfers take longer, but their system will probably just spit out the same email to anyone who uses a MAC to transfer, as it won't have been updated to take into account the longer transfer window for FTTC.

I transferred from AOL to Plusnet Unlimited Fibre last year and got a similar email, the AOL connection stayed on until the day Fibre was installed. Down time was about 2 hours.

Looking forward to Friday when it gets installed, email today to say the home hub 5 is on it's way.
On the BT website it says I can do a self install, so why do the send and engineer?

They have to send an engineer to your local roadside cabinet to wire your phone line into the Infinity cabinet. But he does not necessarily have to do anything in your home any more.

If they send you a hub with integrated fibre modem then you can plug that into your master socket via a filter in the same way as your ADSL service. Originally BT needed to change the master socket and install a separate modem and router. But now it's getting pretty much like ADSL where the customer does all the work

Just that the my order invoice says appointment made for 21st feb between 12 noon and 6pm...

On the BT website it does say that Infinity 1 is self install but that an engineer may have to visit (though it doesn't exactly specify why). But as someone will have to play with the wires at the roadside cabinet anyway perhaps they are simply telling you when that process is being carried out? Or does it actually say the engineer is coming to your home?

If you've migrated, AOL should keep your connection active until the switchover happens. I've migrated twice since 2007, and both times my internet connection with the ISP that I was leaving stayed active until the switchover happened.

I am not sure BT have actually implemented this change yet!!!

I signed up online for Infinity 1 last night and the online system has definitely made an engineer appointment to come to my house. I was surprised at this but it offered a choice of days and either morning or afternoon.

Unless they contact me later to say this is no longer required I will be expecting a visit on the morning I have chosen.

It was all done (for me!) by their automated system! We will see if some human eventually cancels the appointment it has made!

I was cut off for 6 days switching from Sky to BT, Engineer visits for Infinity 2 but for 1 you can do a self install. He checked the speed at the socket and it was as good as hoped for.

Are MAC codes the way to go, I assumed they were being discontinued so let BT do all the work. Wondering if I had asked for a code from Sky my service would have continued until BT switched me over at the cabinet. That's what happened every other time I have switched provider - being cut off the Internet is seriously horrible, don't realise how much you need it until it's gone.

Who cut you off - and why??? I am changing next Tuesday from Sky back to BT and my Sky broadband and phone are both working just fine. I have have had letters from BOTH Sky and BT confirming the date for the changeover.

I did not need a MAC - and I did not expect to either - as Sky currently have control of the entire line (voice, broadband and line rental).

I also did not contact Sky at all about this - BT did all the work for me!

BTW It is the other way round for Infinity 1 (visit) and Infinity 2 (no visit - in theory!)

I assume Sky cut me off, on the BT website it said leave it to them and they will contact Sky and.. well. Emailed Sky just to check why, see what they say.

I would have complained loudly to both of them in your case!!! The line switchover is done by OpenReach who should operate independently of either Sky or BT Retail. It is also possible that BT gave them the wrong date!

Luckily, in my case, both BT and Sky wrote me letters confirming the date that BT had chosen in the online ordering system.

Sky replied, seems if you go the MAC code route you don't lose your Internet fix. That's the impression I got anyhow. Now I'm just sat here watching in sheer bloody disbelief at my 76 M/bit completely unlimited never slow you down no fair usage policy Fibre broadband as it downloads a, ahem, Linux distro at 2k/sec.

Fuming, BT kill Torrents for several hours, I got better speed on my lousy 4 Meg Sky service, what a joke.

Well after further research it seems new contracts actually are unlimited, at least for Infinity 2.
