Jason's Gilbert Grape Comment
Do any others think there will be complaints about this? It wasn't needed at all , fair enough if he didn't like Gareth but that could be offensive to a large percentage of the audience.

nope, he was making reference to a film character wasnt he? - nothing offensive about that
I thought Gareth was actually going for the Gilbert Grape character and he pulled it off if anything, I was puzzled by Jasons comment

But wouldn't the only people who could be offended by this not actually realise he was being offensive?
![]() What he said was daft, because joking about mentally handicapped people has the potential for so many pitfalls. In his favour, the character in the film might have been a bit slow, but he was very likeable, and it appeared as if Gareth was trying to play the fool, so it was a bit of an empty criticism, and it's hard to see it as malicious. What's Eating Gilbert Grape is one of my favourite films, which I've watched loads, but I also know that it's a bit of a cult classic, and the full potential of the insult will have gone over most people's heads. It probably went over the heads of most the ones who love a knee-jerk reaction. |
