Pasties and Sausage Rolls with too much pastry
koantemplation

Does anyone else hate buying pasties or sausage rolls that have too much pastry on them?

With Pasties you can often find them filled with air and just a lump of filling.

Both sausage rolls and cornish pasties can also suffer from the lip of excess pastry. Although this was the original idea with Cornish Pasties (as you were meant to throw the excess away after holding it with dirty hands) we do no need the excess nowadays.

The filling to pastry ratio needs to be at least 40% pastry and 60% filling to be satisfying.

Pasties from proper bakeries are usually ok.

It's prepacked / cooked that are the problem - supermarkets, petrol stations etc.

As for the pastry the crimp is not really effecting the filling. If you want to eat it you can otherwise discard it when done.

There are more calories in the pastry to boot, I find its usually the supermarket stuff that over does the pastry, I usually just chop off the pastry as I eat with a fork and knife.

It's not that there's too much pastry, it's more like there's not enough filling.

I usually buy Ginsters slices and pasties if I pop into a petrol station. They are usually pretty good.

Although in the last few months I've noticed quite a few petrol stations in the area seem to have replaced their Ginsters stock with Walls which aren't as good and suffer from the small filling syndrome. They're also not seasoned as well as the Ginsters.

Saying that though, I tried the limited edition Steak and Ale pastie that Ginsters have out at the moment and it was a bit meh.

Pork pies can also suffer from small filling syndrome.

I often bite into one and get more pastry than filling.

I buy pasties, sausage rolls and pork pies from the butchers (they have won awards for their pies and pasties) and they're always lovely with a perfect filling to pastry ratio.

I tend not to buy supermarket ones as they're nowhere near as nice.

My husband is quite fussy if it isn't homemade he will only eat Morrisons pies and pasties and reckons their sausage rolls are better than mine

I agree, I do love a cornish pasty, but I dont particularly like pastry, I like the filling and lots of it. I hate flaky pastry, all greasy and flaky and I dont like crispy crunchy pastry.

I often think of being the alternative judge on bake off, the one who actually wants a soggy bottom. I like soggy, mushy pastry.

I also dont like yorkshire puddings too crispy

I'm totally with this!

None compare to my own You can make a batch and freeze them ready for cooking - sooo much nicer, and you get to have them just as you prefer.

I have to say, the only times I'm tempted to buy pastry goods is from a decent butchers r bakers, or good ol' Morrisons. They're still not a scratch on my own but they're very decent and never skimpy on the filling.
