Apparently you hear his voice on the phone... not a full return.

was wondering whether, since it's pre-filmed you might actually see him at trenzalore talking on the phone rather than just hearing him, but guessing it will only be the voice, as him in the flesh in capaldi's first episode would be a bit disrespectful. To be honest even his voice on the phone in capaldi's first episode is pushing it a bit, companion's don't usually need reassurance to trust the new doctor from the previous one, as them forming that bond with the new doctor naturally is what help's us form it.

I hope it's just that to be honest.

Not sure I like the idea of this, if true. It was a great send off for Matt... why ruin that and 'upstage' Capaldi's 1st run.

I don't buy it!

Meh, Capaldi won't need a lot of time to gain acceptance with fans, and it's fair play after he poked his eyes into the 50th.

I think after 2 or 3 episodes clara gets a phone call at home from 11. But you have to let capaldi's doctor establish himself for a few episodes first though

On a previously recorded voicemail message perhaps, or something like that?

On the contrary, I think it would be far worse to have the phone-call 2-3 episodes in. For a start, Clara really ought to be trusting the new Doctor by the 3rd episode. But also, it would be rather abrupt to suddenly have the 11th Doctor make an appearance just as we were getting used to his replacement.

I don't have a problem with a three-minute phone-call where we just hear his voice, particularly if it's within the 1st episode.

This is from doctorwhotv.co.uk last week for anyone interested.

Spoiler
In the scene they shot on Tuesday (28/1), Clara is still having a hard time accepting the 12th Doctor and needs some reassurance.

Fortunately she receives a timey wimey phone call from the 11th Doctor! He’s calling from Trenzalore shortly after his regeneration on the clock tower, but before Clara enters the TARDIS and he changes.

Matt Smith is thought to have already recorded his half of the scene during filming of The Time of the Doctor.

Some incomplete dialogue after Clara answers the call:

Clara: What do you mean.. “it’s the Doctor?”
11th Doctor: I’m phoning you from Trenzalore.
Clara: I don’t understand.
11th Doctor: From the past. From before I changed. It’s all still to happen for me. It’s coming though, not long now, I can feel it.
Clara: But.. why would you do this?

The remaining dialogue was inaudible but Eleven reassures her about Twelve: “I know you’re scared, but he will be too; and he’ll need you.”

At some point the 11th and 12th Doctor will exchange some dialogue on the call.

The 12th Doctor: So who is it?
The 11th and 12th Doctors at the same time: Oh, is that the Doctor?

Clara is eventually convinced and she hugs the 12th Doctor

Spoiler
I can just see him snacking on that bowl of fish fingers and custard in the TARDIS as he makes that call.

I'm not sure we should even hear Elevens voice. Might be more effective if they find a way of just ensuring we know Who it is on the phone and seeing Claras response.

Bugger. I wish I hadn't read this. It's me own fault, I'm usually pretty good at staying spoiler free when they're all kept in the one spoiloriffic thread. But when they're on their own like this one, it's like having just one chocolate when you're supposed to be on a diet cos just one won't matter, right?

So now, if this is all true, it'll still be cool but not half as cool as it would have been if I hadn't known about it. Bugger. Still, like I said, only got meself to blame.

Anyhoo, if the above report regarding the timing of the call is true...

Spoiler
...that would tie in with Time of the Doctor cos the Tardis phone was hanging off the hook when Clara returned to the Tardis.

I don't think Matt Smith or even his voice should be in Capaldi's first episode as I believe it undermines Capaldi. It would be like having Tom Baker or his voice in Peter Davison's first episode. I don't think it should even be in the second or third of Capaldi's episodes either.

I also don't know why Clara should need "reassurance". After all, Moffat shoved her into the Classic episodes and she supposedly saved all of the Doctor's previous regenerations, apparently by either looking at them or shouting "Doctor" (with the exception of the 1st Doctor) and so she of all people shouldn't have a problem with the Doctor regenerating.

Maybe Moffat isn't as confident with his casting of Capaldi as he seems, if he feels the need to bring Matt Smith back so soon.

I agree, it's almost as if he's listened to all the people who want him to cast young people constantly, and feel's he has to somehow reassure them, whereas from what I have seen of his acting previously, I would think his performance will speak for itself. Series 2 felt strange because david tennant fit so well it felt like he had been the doctor for ages, rather than it being his first series. I didn't get the same feeling with smith at first, but feel like I will get that feeling again with capaldi, as he just seem's to suit, and I tend to think life long fan's put more into it, because it's more than just a job to them, like tennant did.

I think the problem with series 5 was that everything was new- new doctor, new companion, new TARDIS plus all the actors were relatively unknown. With series 8, little is changing apart from a new doctor, who is a well-established actor anyway, therefore I feel there is little need to assure anyone.

Some overreacting, I feel, as with every piece of Doctor Who news ever.

It seems extremely, incredibly unlikely that Moffat isn't confident with his supposed first choice of casting. Sometimes he is allowed to write for the characters instead of himself. In this case, Clara.

Just because Clara has met previous Doctors and is well aware of regeneration doesn't mean she doesn't need reassurance about a Doctor she hasn't met with a personality she hasn't dealt with performing actions she might not have expected. We don't know what he does in episode one, or how she reacts to him.

If a brief conversation with Smith is enough to undermine Capaldi on the night - something has gone wrong.

to be honest i think it is just a case of Moffat thinking 'wouldn't it be cool if...' and thats it. he's probably wrestled with it the question of wether it is poor form and decided to do it anyway, it should be cool especially for a 7 year who is seeing his first regeneration proper and approval from 11 might help.

from a story point of view Clara is still in her christmas outfit so it looks like she is on a whirlwind from the regen straight into an adventure and not sure whats happening, is this regen different? has it went wrong? does she like the new personality and all this while chasing some baddy in victorian london and only a very short time after loosing a friend, it's understandable if it is all a bit much for her

”

That fits with something Moffat said in an interview last November, basically that it had taken him a long time to accept the fact that something he thinks would be cool might actually also be considered cool by other people. What a great nerd.

The Doctor may look like Peter Capaldi now - but out there, somewhere, 11 is making a phone call. I like how it should serve as a reminder that they're all still out there - somewhere.

The Doctor is a time traveller, after all.

what I dont like is that from capaldi's point of view he would have only made that phone call probably a few hour's or so before they recieve it, so it will be a bit strange if he act's surprised, and even if he dosen't he would know exactly what was going to be be said because it was he who had said it, recently. It's thing's like this that bug me slightly, along with thing's like matt smith mocking david tennant's dress sense in day of the doctor as it kind of show's the writer's almost forgetting that it's all one man and not different character's. If you saw your younger self you wouldn't mock because you'd remember exactly why you dressed/acted at the time and would more likely feel nostalgic. Similarly, If you made a phone call you knew your future self would hear, when you got to the point of being that future self, not only would you be waiting on the call, you would know exactly what the past you was going to say

Oh come on please. The phone call will not compromise Capaldi's development but will help to give the impression that Doctor is ONE person with many faces. Also, it will make this transition a little bit softer and more 'painless'. So, it can only help Capaldi in development.

Also, Matt Smith was such a good Doctor and I wouldn't complain if he actually returns.

Unless the Twelfth Doctor has memory problems. He forgot how to fly the TARDIS for a kickoff.
