Which iPad?
Hi all
I've been toying with the idea of getting an iPad for some time. Never really had any justification or need to get one. My son is autistic and has responded very well to some fun apps on my iphone. I'm thinking an iPad would be even better. So which one? I'm confused with all these generation ones. The iPad air is the latest right? I don't need a large hard drive with sim card, 4G etc. Just an iPad with Wifi for the internet and apps. What should I consider going for? thanks TL |

The iPad Air is the latest model.
It sounds like you just need the wifi 16GB version for what you want to use it for. http://store.apple.com/uk/buy-ipad/ipad-air |

Thanks for the reply.
Ouch - £399. I don't suppose I'll get that cheaper anywhere else eh? I may need to wait a month or two for the purchase. |

If it's for your son, why not look at the iPad Mini 16GB wifi - it's smaller and lighter, but still really usable for games, web browsing etc.
Basic 16GB mini, non Retina is £249 from Apple. Looks like Argos are currently selling for £219. |

If price is an issue you could look at Android tablets as well if the apps you want are available

If you really want an iPad and don't want to risk buying second hand take a look at the Apple refurb site http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad they come with the same Apple warranty as a new one but are cheaper but not as cheap as an Android Tablet. Just check out the differences, Apps and security issues with Android before you decide which to buy.

I've had a refurb iPad from Apple and it was like new, including new box, cables etc.

You can get the iPad 2 new for £329. It is slower with a lower resolution screen, but still does the job.
You can also see if the iPad 4 is still available. It isn't as thin and light as the Air, but might actually be a little more robust for that. That being said I've been lucky enough to get my hands on an Air and it's a brilliant little device, if you've got the cash it's definitely worth the splurge. |

Since the tablet is mostly for the child's use I'd go for the cheaper and sturdier iPad 2 option (though I'd hurry since according to this story it will soon be no longer available).

I am obviously in thick mode......can someone please confirm these 2 are the same. As usual JL are higher, but am doubting myself in that one model is inferior to the other...

I dont get why people would pay over the odds for an iPad when there are sites like Smartfonestore.com that do refurb models which are a fraction of the price!
They've been engineer tested and checked over and come with a limited warranty and power cable. |

And check gumtree and facebook as well. For example just saw a 16GB iPad2, no box or charger (its probably nicked) going for £170 on local facebook group. Charger and cable are around £15. (btw, I would of course tell you to get nexus 7 or hudl, lol) |

with regards to buying refurb iPads, I've no idea why people by refurb iPads from other retailers when Apple themselves sell refurb models on their online store for very good prices. They also come as like brand new with new box/screen/cables etc.

In the case of John Lewis it's because they give a five year warranty on their electrical items, though not sure that this applies to the iPad.
JL will price-match as well (but not against web-only retailers) |
