BBC Sports App on Samsung UE32ES5500K

I have never managed to get the BBC sports app working on my Samsung UE32ES5500K smart TV.

The results seem to vary over time but when I tried it today the result was as follows:

TV briefly displayed the message "Connecting" then "Loading". The screen then went completely black for a long time (20 seconds or more) and I thought it had hung up. However, it then changed to a static grey screen with a design of swirling lines on it. At this point, nothing further happened. I tried various buttons - cursor up/down/left/right, Return. None of them did anything. I then tried pressing Exit and the set switched back to live TV.

Has anyone else had any success with this app on this, or a similar, TV? Any ideas what I might be doing wrong or suggestions as to what to try next?
