23 [NE] = Sandy Roscoe = 7.92% (Round 2)

Technically now Sandy Black... but I thought that sounded a bit like a 70's porn star; either way Sandy is a new entry at 23. The head of the Roscoe clan and with a seeming inability to discipline her sons at all. Gillian Taylforth has shown over the years in Eastenders what a great actress that she is and therefore to move soaps was always a risky move. I think Sandy has bags of potential, mainly down to Gillian playing her; but when are we actually going to see her be properly used? ie actually have some gritty hard hitting storylines that we know she can knock out of the park. I guess when she finds out about Fraser we will probably get some of that, however at the moment it feels the character is treading water somewhat and needs to be used a heck of a lot more. It's fair to say the Roscoe's as a whole haven't really been hugely successful and funnily the one's that are a bit more underused have come out higher than others (barring Freddie).

22 [42] = Ruby Button = 7.97% (Round 2)
(Ranking History = 46-42-42-22)

Ruby takes a massive climb up the rankings after 3 years of being near enough bottom 10. Last year she was involved in the bullying storyline and like on screen it's all been forgotten about now. I always thought Ruby had potential to be good and it seems in her final that as she is being used in a good way and indeed a likeable way that Anna Shaffer has decided to move on. We've seen her bully, her boyfriend die and seen her have a heart attack from taking drugs. Her exit isn't too far around the corner and barring a surprise return wont be in next years voting, so I guess it's good for her that she bows out on a high, not quite managing to make the top 20 though.

21 [NE] = Leela Lomax = 8.11% (Round 2)

Leela is just outside the top 20 and is the 4th highest new entry this year. A bit of a tomboy character and a firewoman to boot. She's quite a strong character, direct and doesn't really take any nonsense. I think she's got quite a good sisterly relationship going on with Ste and is a character that hope is developed and used a lot more as time goes on. She hasn't really had any big storylines as yet and is kind of on the outside of everyone else's; I'm guessing that is going to change and due to the sheer amount of new characters bought into the show some are being used more than others. The Lomax Family as a whole have faired quite well in the rankings and whilst none have broken the top 20, none of the key players have done that badly and I think as they're used more they may challenge more next year.

20 [NE] = Freddie Roscoe = 6.76% (Semi Final)
(Ranking History = X-X-X-20)

Freddie is the 3rd highest new entry this year and manages to just make it into the top 20. Never one to really change his expression, Freddie though has been at the center of some of the Roscoe's biggest storylines and is off course caught up in the gangster world of Trevor and Fraser. He has a fairly fiery relationship with Sinead, despite having unrequited love for his brother's wife; Lynsey. There is no doubt a massive amount of more Freddie to come; with the gangster stuff set to come out at some point, him knowing what Fraser is like and the fall out of the Joe saga. Whether or not he changes his facial expression though is another matter.

19 [20] = Diane O'Connor = 7.25% (Semi Final)
(Ranking History = 25-33-20-19)

Diane climbs a place next and to her best position to date, she has always been a fairly popular character even when was underused and hardly ever featured. 2012/2013 changed all that off course as she has been involved in some of the biggest storylines including off course the fallout of the Esther bullying storyline with Sinead, Tony's cancer storyline and will feature heavily when Finn's rape of John Paul come's out. I like the character of Diane and think her pairing with Tony is a good one, she obviously gave birth to twins last year and was given what she always wanted; children of her own. She does at times have possibly questionable parenting skills; particularly when you see how Sinead and Finn act; however she is their step-mother and a lot of the damage had probably been done before she got on the scene.

18 [NE] = Jason Roscoe = 7.27% (Semi Final)

Jason enters at 18 and becomes the second highest new entry this year. Jason is probably my favourite of the Roscoe brothers and he comes out on top here too. He seems to be the only one of them that is likeable, has depth and is played by an alright actor. He also has a fairly endearing quality about him even if he is extremely weak willed and lacks a backbone where Robbie is concerned. He has a good budding relationship with Holly, however as we've seen for the passed few months he is grappling with serious body issues (despite him being extremely easy on the eye). I'd imagine that 2014 will see the whole body issue storyline develop a lot further. It will also be good to see how Jason and Holly go for 2014, he works well with the new Holly and actually have a good, likeable relationship (rare of Hoaks youngsters).

17 [33] = Patrick Blake = 7.51% (Semi Final)
(Ranking History = X-X-33-17)

Patrick takes a massive climb this year, last year he was still relatively new when the voting happened and therefore since then he has been involved in some big storylines. Particularly the domestic violence storyline with Maxine and just his general slyness and manipulation of everyone; you can see where Sienna gets it from. Possibly not always a likeable character, Patrick is however an interesting one; he obviously is going to come a cropper at some point when Maxine reveals everything that is going on. So it will actually be good to see how this affects Patrick and what happens next with the character. However as shown by the climb, Patrick is a popular character taking one of the bigger climbs this year. Although seeing how badly the majority of the new entries have done, a lot of it may be down to the weaker cast in general and characters are going up that way.

16 [50] = Sinead O'Connor = 7.64% (Semi Final)
(Ranking History = 21-45-50-16)

Following on from Patrick, Sinead also takes a massive climb this year after coming in the bottom 5 last year. 2013 saw Sinead being revealed as one of the key bullies in Esther's storyline and since then the production team have tried everything they can in order to redeem her unlikeable character and it has possibly worked. I'm not the biggest Sinead fan, I find her really grating and unlikeable overall. She has since the bullying fallout have a foot in the gangster world, prostitution and also given birth. She has got a good relationship going on with Ste and despite sleeping with Robbie on the eve of her wedding night, married Freddie Roscoe. There is no doubt a huge more amount to come from Sinead, it would actually be good to see her interact with Finn more - they could wallow in their wickedness together; however either way she has made a big leap from last year and is proving a fairly popular (if not marmite) character.

15 [23] = Jack Osborne = 8.18% (Semi Final)

Like many other long term characters which Birkwood hasn't got rid off, Jack climbs to his best ranking to date and into the top 15 for the first time. The Osbornes have had a fairly rocky year all round; the whole Sienna business, Frankie's affair and the Esther bullying storyline. 2013 also saw it revealed that Jack had a fling with Sandy back in the day and was actually Darren's mum. Jack, like Tony is a stalwart of the show and it would be odd to have Hollyoaks with Jack to be honest so it's good to see him still so popular after so many years and that he can compete with the younger cast members that the show is aimed at.

14 [06] = Esther Bloom = 8.25% (Semi Final)
(Ranking History = X-19-06-14)

Esther slips out of the top 10 this year after last years big climb post the bullying storyline. She hasn't really had a massive year post that however did get a big (ish) storyline out of 2013 Later's series. Her relationship with Tilly failed after Tilly fell in love in one episode and decided to move on leaving Esther behind. We've seen Esther forgive both her bullies which led her to try and commit suicide and was even (bizarrely) Sinead's maid of honour. The character really has been on the outer of the other big Osborne storylines and been more reactionary eg to Frankie's affair, the Sienna stuff etc. No doubt she will have a big storyline in 2014 and will be the only teen at the Osbornes with Ruby's departure.

13 [17] = Carmel Valentine = 8.67% (Semi Final)
(Ranking History = 15-25-17-13)

Carmel climbs to her best position to date in 4 years, which isn't too bad considering the length of time that she has been in the show. In the last year we've seen her been slowly worn down and fall for Jim McGinn (RIP), take over from Theresa as Kathleen Angel's mum and also have the scar on her face removed. Personally I thought the scar storyline pushed Carmel into a new, interesting direction and it was a shame that after a short period of time there was surgery to remove it... especially seeing as at the time the doctor's said it was permanent. That storyline also gave Gemma Merna a chance to really shine in the role. Her relationship with Jim was an odd one and they bizarrely worked well together, I'm interested to see where they take the character to be honest as I'm guessing she's just going to revert back to superficial blond and forget everything that's happened to her.

12 [NE] = Lindsey Butterfield = 9.09% (Semi Final)
(Ranking History = X-X-X-12)

Lindsey becomes the highest new entry this year and considering the amount of them it seems as though she and a couple of others are the only ones to make some form of positive impact. The huge influx of new characters was meant to regenerate the show and get the show out of this hole which it was supposedly in. However IMO the show just needed to use the characters that were there much more effectively and give them proper storylines. Anyway Lindsey debuts fairly well at 12; she's Joe's wife, was involved in the killing off of Browning and also has some fairly good chemistry with Freddie. Recently we've been seeing her deal with the fallout of Joe's disappearance and the fact he seems to have left her. However it seems he will return at some point and Freddie's involvement in his disappearance will no doubt also come out. So 2014 will no doubt have a lot of revelations for Lindsey and indeed all the Roscoe family.

11 [54] = Jim McGinn = 9.11% (Semi Final)

Jim takes the biggest climb this year from last year's bottom ranked character to one that just missed out on a chance in the final round. When the 2013 vote took place voters were saying who the heck is Jim? Fast forward a year and everyone was thrown by his exit from the show and the climb shows how popular the character had become. Initially there for fairly comedy purposes, it was revealed he was in the world of Trevor and Fraser and that the whole gangster stuff etc and protecting Myra led to his sudden exit from the show. He was also a key player in the majority of the Browning storylines last year too. He had built up a fairly good relationship with Carmel and was always on hand for a witty one liner. Obviously he won't be appearing in next years character battle, however I think Jim is a character that just shows how much can change in a year for a character; bottom, to nearly top 10!

i still despair at Jim not making the top 10 he deserved it but to climb that high is amazing. Once properly introduced he was obviously popular so it is a shame he was gone before his time. RIP Jim
