I've just signed up to Talk Talk YouView and am waiting for my box to arrive. I know I'm doing this the wrong way around, but I'm reading up on the new service...

Seems like an even handed review, and I can't see it already posted here.

Be aware that what box you get depends on the service you take. For the lower level service, TalkTalk supply the Huawei DN360T which does not have recording abilities - it buffers up to 60 mins (depending on the definition) but only has one tuner and no hard drive. The review you link to is for the PVR version with two tuners and hard drive. The latest version is the DN372T although how this is different from the earlier DN370T, if at all, is not available.

I'm getting the recording PVR. I used to have my phone and broadband from different suppliers, and TV was just Freeview with my own PVR. It will be cheaper to combine phone and internet with TalkTalk, and the TV-Plus package is a bonus.

"Oh, plus that £50 installation fee of course. There's always an installation fee. "

Not true. Installation is provided free. But apparently it is easy to install.

It is easy to install. I once had to reset my box because its software had become mixed up or corrupted, or something. Anyway, it had stopped recording. The reset option is just a question of following the instructions, which are straightforward. The downside of resetting is that you lose all your recordings and scheduled recordings. That wasn't a huge problem for me. I am not so attached to my recordings that I cannot bear to be without them - especially since anything I would want to keep is bound to be repeated sooner or later anyway.

It was only a couple of weeks ago, but I'm already struggling to remember what was discussed.

I installed it all myself, with powerline (£35 extra) connection from YouView box to Router. Very straightforward. I think there was the option on TalkTalk sending an engineer, but I can't remember if there was a fee for this or not.

Anyway, if you've ever connected a PVR, or even a VHS to your TV, you can probably do without an engineer anyway.

Although the box is easy to install, that is not all that the guy does when he visits. Mine also fitted new filters to the phone line, replaced my router with one that will handle fibre optic when it becomes available in my area and made sure that my broadband was running at the best speed my line is capable of.
