While all the UK netwoks make a meal about 4G and make it hard for customers to get it other than on expensive contracts, the Polish networks have a different attitude.

Buy a 4G SIM from Play for 5PLN (£1) add 25PLN (£5) credit for sms and calls and get 500MB of 4G data for 30 days free. Load SIM and use within 2 minutes. The Poles could teach some a lesson in simple marketing!

Check this out if you visit Poland. Far better for data use than any current roaming deals.

Not really. Three, EE and O2 all provide 4G services on pay as you go.

So not all networks. The only ones with live 4G networks that don't at the moment is Vodafone and Tesco Mobile.

No UK network will give you 500MB for £5 and include £5 worth of credit. The whole point is the Poles have taken the pain out of 4G. Turn up, change SIM and £5 later you are good to go within 2 minutes. For price, ease of use and simplicity there is no comparison with UK offerings.

Would that not involve a different phone number?

I mean, I suppose it's okay for people who just want the data but I suspect most people would rather sort it out on their existing network rather than getting a new number just for the benefit of 4G data.

Yes you need to use a Polish number but compare the cost of 500MB of roaming data! Not perfect but a decent temporary measure for travelling by train etc. 4G in Poland seems to be a bit slower than in the UK with 10-15Mbps d/l and 7-10Mbps u/l normal.

Roll on 2015 when all roaming charges will be banned in the EU. That's good assuming the UK remains part of it!

1 UK network Just gives it at no extra cost no matter what plan or offer you're on. Your opening post forgets to mention this and is highly inaccurate to claim the above. I can only imagine you're on the windup again.

Just to be 100% clear....NO UK network provides free inclusive use of UK data allowances in Poland. Some have extra bolt-ons but those are vastly more expensive than a local SIM option. In this instance £5 for 500MB of 4G data is unbeatable on any UK contract or PAYG network when roaming. Happy to see some evidence of how a UK mobile network customer can use 500MB of data roaming in Poland for less than £5 including the cost of extra add ons.

Oh and there is the small matter of SIM activations in the UK. 4G is not a given if you buy a PAYG SIM unlike it is in Poland. The SIM packs here are clearly marked LTE and that's what you get as soon as it's inserted in a 4G handset. Simples!

Switzerland and Norway aren't part of the EU yet it's possible to roam there on the same deals as going to EU countries - eg, with Vodafone.

Three makes those deals look expensive!!

And having 4G with 500mb of data a month is like having a Ferrari with 3 litres of petrol a month.

Er...no. £5 on 3's 321 deal buys 500MB of data but no inclusive voice or SMS allowance and it is a gamble as to whether your new PAYG SIM will be provisioned for 4G as 3 are activating customers in batches.

As for 500MB, ideal for a short stay along with hotel and public WiFi. The key factor for me is just how easy it is in Poland to get 4G, although it's limited in terms of both coverage and speed by the looks of it. It would be good if 4G PAYG was as straightforward in the UK but I guess that will happen in time.

one might imagine that the costs of running a network in poland are somewhat lower than here.

Maybe but I suspect the strategy in Poland is to open access to as many as possible and make a little from lots rather than a lot from a few. Great for tourists. The selection of SIMs at stores is amazing with deals for data, international calling and voice and text. Whatever your need it seems to be covered for far less than using a UK mobile account even taking into consideration the new capped EU rates.

A great thread this to bring some reality and perspective to shame to poor UK 4G services.

At no extra cost? Not really, as subs have gone up all round.

The Brits always make a song and dance about 'progress' even when they are way behind the rest of the world. I remember when colour printing was being introduced in the UK - 10 to 15 years after it was done elsewhere. Then there was 'new technology' and computers etc - many years after the rest of the world was using it.

Consumer Prices in Poland are 46.72% lower than in United Kingdom
Rent Prices in Poland are 57.54% lower than in United Kingdom
Restaurant Prices in Poland are 55.52% lower than in United Kingdom
Groceries Prices in Poland are 52.19% lower than in United Kingdom

When you consider this Three looks like great value with 4G at no extra cost and unlimited data. Actually the UK market outside over overpriced and under-performing O2 and Vodafone is pretty good. I say under-performing in terms of data coverage and performance.

This thread highlights the availability and ease of use of 4G in Poland for visitors. ALL UK network customers can make savings using a Polish SIM to access mobile data.

What UK networks sell data for is not relevant re this topic other than in relation to roaming.

If you get a 4G sim from Three and use it on 3-2-1 you get 4G and for a pound less than in Poland you can have 500MB of 4G data, leaving you with £1 credit spare against the Polish price for 30 mins of calls or 50 texts. That's before you look at the fact the cost of living is 50% cheaper in Poland, so you could actually get double that.

You made some bold claims in the subject and opening post and only mentioned visiting Poland in the last line. What you posted certainly isn't true for residents, and in the context of travel the same deals are available in the UK if not cheaper when you consider the cost of living here and price of goods is so different.

This was NOT posted to promote UK network offerings which are NOT relevant re roaming in Poland. The point is that 4G is as easy as popping a SIM in, no ifs or buts and the 500MB is FREE for 30 days in addition to call and text allowances so that beats anything any tourist arriving in the UK can buy.

The main point is if travelling to Poland, dump your UK SIM and enjoy data at a fraction of roaming rates, with instant access to 4G in main cities if you have an unlocked handset.

Any mention to roaming was only briefly mentioned at the end of your post, both the subject line and the opening sentence said the following:-

4G in Poland, easy and cheap.

While all the UK netwoks make a meal about 4G and make it hard for customers to get it other than on expensive contracts, the Polish networks have a different attitude.
This is the part that people disagreed with. You made a comparison with what UK networks offer and even converted that to pounds. We showed that considering the cost of living is 1/2 the cost in Poland as it is in the UK that UK 4G networks were arguably better value.

I agree that it is good for UK people travelling to Poland, just not with the statements about 'all UK operators' not being as good as Polish operators in terms of allowing low cost access to 4G. We know which operator does offer low cost access to 4G for visitors if they pick up a sim or for residents.

For clarity, you can arrive in Poland and get 500MB of data, inclusive calls and SMS with instant 4G access for £6. No activation issues or patchy coverage in the capital. Buy a marked LTE SIM and job done. Perfect for travellers and a vastly superior offer to any in the UK. A similar amount of data, voice and texts would cost far more even on the cheapest UK PAYG tariff and 4G on that is not guaranteed presently.

Yeah it's because there is special treaties between those countries. Norway is part of the European economic area, Switzerland has a really special arrangement completely unique and that relationship is about to be extremely strained because of a new bill Switzerland has just passed on immigration this month.
