But the pros are obviously held back by what the Celebrities can do

When you see the pros together on a full size rink, not a small DOI rink they can be amazing, although obviously not Olympic standard.

I've looked on Wiki - Maria was Bulgarian champion:

Quote:
“As Maria Hadjiiska, she was a member of the Bulgarian national ice dancing team from 1988 to 1992 and her country's national ice dance champion in 1990-1991.”

but never made the Olympics

Sean and Jodeyne were members of the Canadian Olympic Team when they were younger..... Mel and Fred were Junior US champions, but apart from them, I don't think any of the others are or were in the top level.

I havnt watched this years Olympics but coincidentally last night I came across Robins 1980 Olympic win. There are no words, it was just oh wow all through!!
I don't think it's fair to compare the Olympians with the DOI skaters - as d0lphins says the pros can only skate to their partners level - but also I think the size of the rink must restrict them too. The speeds that Robin was reaching would surely have them flashing out of the rink and down the high street!

Wow, I'm surprised. I just presumed that all the professional ice skaters were former olympians.

I think the highest achiever internationally was Todd who skated with Kelly Holmes in Series 1.

Nina was a World Junior Ice Dance champion as well. Sean & Jodeyne competed at World Championships but not Olympics.

After watching the skating at the Olympics, the best that DOI can be said to be is 'pedestrian'. But then it was never meant to be more than a bit of Sunday evening fluff, so that's ok.

When Chris and Jayne were on The One Show on Thursday, they said they have to alter their Bolero routine when they do it on the show, or on tour because the rinks are so much smaller. They then had to remember their old Gold medal routine to skate it again in Sarajevo earlier this week, although apparently they changed it slightly.

So if Dancing on Ice was presented on an Olympic size rink, most of the skaters would be lost. They are given routines that are suitable for the ice rink they're using.

Don't know if things have changed but back in Torvill and Dean days if skaters were professionals, i.e. skating was their paid job, they couldn't take part in the Olympics as that was for amateurs.

So it doesn't mean the non-Olympian pros aren't good enough, just that they skate for the entertainment of others rather than competition purposes.

I hardly think its fair to watch the Olympics and expect Dancing on Ice to compare. Its an entertainment show and as such they all do very well. The Olympics is something that people train for years for and a whole different thing.

Yes, it all seems quite slow and, really, dull.

I understand that the comparison isn't fair; but thinking about what's more interesting or entertaining to watch doesn't have to be fair in that way.

The DOI routines seem slow, dull, and with unconvincing, faked-up "performance" to try to distract from the slow dullness.
