Good You know the type I mean, I'm sure!

Back on topic, I am struggling a little with having to keep track of my eating and I don't like having to face the reality that I was really putting some crap into my body at times. It has been quite educational though!

But if you don't really give a crap about what you eat then how do you know that you're getting all the micronutrients you need to keep your body going?? Seems a bit overly careless and risky

Wish I was like Ricky and could eat sausage rolls without compunction.

Yes, I don't want to put on weight or develop type 2 diabetes ,alzheimers disease or other weight related conditions. I'm in that age group where I need to look after myself.
I suspect the OP is a lot younger and can afford to be carefree about his diet.

Couldn't give a 4X. Have never checked a calorie on anything in my whole life.

Not anymore. Used to and lost quite a bit of weight doing so but I felt so unhealthy. Nowadays I stick to low sugar since that tends to make me binge and try and eat enough wholesome type foods like whole milk, fish, grains and lots of vegetables. Think it works out much better than stressing all the time.

I don't want to spend my whole life wondering about what may become of me because of what i eat. We could all drop dead at any point or catch diseases even if we eat healthy, i just want to live my life without constantly worrying about such things. You aren't exactly living if you are constantly watching what you eat.

As long as you enjoyed the food you eat is that not the only important thing. I prefer pizza and chips over sunday roast.

I keep an eye on what I eat, it's easy to glance at calorie counts when food shopping. I'm always amazed at crisps, they vary from 88 - 250 calories per small bag And some ready made salads have more calories than pizza.

I'm not fat now and I don't intend to become that way! But I'm not obsessive about food, and I do tons of exercise, cycling, running and climbing, so hopefully morbid obesity isn't just around the corner.

I try not to eat processed foods that contain lots of fat and sugar and I make sensible choices for myself and my family. The kids like takeaways though but we only have them occasionally.

I like to have an awareness of what's in what, but I don't think you should obsess about it unless you are actively trying to lose or gain weight.

I'm still surprised at how many people are fairly ignorant when it comes to the calorie, or fat/sugar content of certain foods, or just what is or isn't healthy.

Often there's not much to choose from when picking up a sweet treat, but one option can have three times as many calories as the other, or the equivalent of a rather substantial meal.

Then you get the jokers who think it's hilarious that someone might have a diet drink with a burger etc as if having an extra 140, empty calories, don't matter unless you are having a salad with no dressing.

when i was doing my weight loss bet a few years ago, i didn't count a single calorie. lasted about a day trying to work it all out and just gave up.

concentrated on the fat content of everything and it worked just as well - still lost 8 stone in 12 months.

Yep I do. I've recently started the 5:2 diet so when making 500 calories stretch on a fast day I need to be very conscious of how many calories are in everything I eat.

I like to know how many calories Im consuming the rest of the time too, Im not obsessive over it but I do keep an eye on it.

I never used to but now I'm knocking on a bit I've found that each calorie is much more effective! I'm pretty healthy, walk between 12-15k steps a day, but if I don't keep an eye on the calories the weight sneaks on.....

I am mindful yes.

I am currently taking 1200 calories a day (more with exercise) as I am overweight.

If and when I get down to a more healthy weight then I will have more calories.

I need to lose about a stone to be healthy but ultimately I'm aiming to lose 2st.

I read all labels and avoid stuff that has large amounts of fat and sugar in. I don't worry too much about calories, if you avoid too much fat and sugar you generally avoid high calorie foods anyway.

As to the 6yr old being expelled for his mini cheddars, I find that incredibly annoying that the school sees fit to ban them and chocolate but encourages cereal bars. As a parent I know my growing son can handle higher in fat foods than I can and is fine eating the occasional bag of mini cheddars and bar of chocolate, not daily mind, the salt content of cheddars is quite high. I've never given my kids cereal bars, they contain masses of sugar. Kids need a bit of fat as they are growing. Sugar is never really necessary is it? Natural sugar from fruit is fine but to add sugar to food is totally unnecessary.

There is so much ignorance surrounding what is healthy and what isn't and this is a big part of why parents get narky when the government hassles schools to hassle parents about what their kids eat. Especially when they have no idea about good nutrition as you can tell by the vast majority of school meals.

I'll look at fat or sugar content if I'm unsure, but I've never been one for cakes and sweets and the like, and apart from the odd pizza I don't have much pre-prepared food so I don't need to keep an eye on it. Cereal bars were created in Satan's kitchen.

When my OH is on a diet, he is checking everything to the calorie, which is part of the process, I guess. I find it a very sad way to live, though. I prefer to stick to unprocessed foods, and not too much of the ones which are obviously more calorific. I do the 5:2 diet with good success, so I count the calories on those days, and just eat good normal food on the others. I prefer to not have an adversarial relationship with food - learning about calories and nutrition is one thing, but continuously applying it to your life is just depressing.

I control my portion sizes but I don't worry about calories specifically. I've never been an overeater, though out of necessity I count my carbs, and I'll weigh my food if I have to to get an accurate count. If I started obsessing over kcals as well I think I would lose my mind.

I do, I lost a heap of weight counting calories and have been able to keep it off. Im not as obessive about it as I first was but do go to the effort of eating the more healthier foods now.

I don't tend to look at the labels.

For my main meal I just make sure I have a little meat / fish, some veg and either potatoes, cous cous or noodles.

For desert I usually try and include some fruit.
