Hi folks,

Basically I'm buying a next gen console(PS4) and a new TV. What I was wondering was there any point in getting a smart TV or how does the PS4's media feature's stack up to it.

I would be using either smart TV/PS4 in conjunction with my android tablet to control the apps and I've seen this work very well with a friends tv/tablet using Spotify and Youtube, is this possible on the PS4?

The apps I would be using most frequently would be Spotify, Youtube, Facebook and Netflix as well as other TV apps(e.g. BBC Iplayer).

The TV size will be around the 40"-42" size and will be wall mounted.

Any other advice you think I would find suitable would be appreciated.

Assuming you're wanting to buy a decent quality and spec TV then it's unlikely that you will be able to find one without 'SMART' features, it's pretty well universal now.

I was recently looking for a new TV and was not bothered about it being smart, as I have smart apps on my PS3 and Virgin TiVo. Ended up buying a Panasonic Viera TX-L39EM6B 39" LED TV (exclusive to Currys / PC World) which is not smart, although you can access the BBC iPlayer via the red button. It has a very good picture quality and I am very pleased with it.

The PS4's media features are somewhat limited at the moment.

Available apps are BBC iPlayer, LoveFilm Instant, Netflix, Demand 5, BBC News, BBC Sport and Vidzone. I would expect this list to increase significantly in the coming months and years though with another 20 apps due to arrive before Spring 2014.

You can also access Sony's own Music Unlimited and Video services and the web browser can be used for the likes of YouTube and Facebook.
