Philip Davis, also first seen in The Fires of Pompeii.

Or Steve Coogan.

I'm still in favour of Charles Dance taking on the role.

The only choice is Malcolm McDowell ... if they can get him.

Adrian Lester, Jason Isaacs, Lenny Henry as a completely left field option. Although just as with the role of the Doctor himself its not a case of one good option, there are a lot of actors who would be great.

Dougray Scott. Was thinking this this afternoon watching him in a biblical moses saga on that true entertainment channel (visiting my folks)
He is a very underated actor, I'd bet he would play a good darker master well tbh..

Here's a rather left-field suggestion. How about Nigel Havers? He played a suave but sly character on Corrie,
and I noticed (whilst idly flicking through the channels one evening) he'd grown a classic-era Master goatee
in a recent appearance on a 3rd rate "entertainment" show on ITV called All-Star Mr & Mrs.

A screengrab from the infuriatingly awful ITV Player!
(Only needs a bit of Brylcreem!)

I was thinking nigel havers myself recently as well. He has always played suave & cunning kind of roles quite well. & having seen him recently in that 3rd rate show as well especially seeing him with that (anthony ainley style) goatee beard, (as though he has been growing it for a reason) it did kind of get me wondering if he is to be the new master.

I personally wasnt too keen on john simm as i found him too manic. However i do believe he should make a sylvester mccoy kind of appearance just in order to do a regeneration scene.

To me, John Simm never really worked. Too manic.

What you really want is someone who can appear charming with a larger than life persona that can win the affections of the masses, but of course behind the scenes be sinister and evil. Generally older comes across better in the part, another reason why Simm didn't work for me. Having a beard too -it's a Master tradition, and maybe someone who has a foreign air about him, either in looks or speak.

A dark character with dark looks.

A younger picture here, sure -he's been crafting his technique since it was taken, but this fella looks like he'd fit the bill just perfect (watch out Clara):

Not sure if he's available at the moment.

I would've also suggested Rik Mayall for the role of The Master. He'd have been ideal considering the way
he played the fictional Tory MP Alan B'Stard in The New Stateman ... cold, ruthless, arrogant and nasty.

Sadly, that's no longer possible . . .
