45 (51) Simon Barlow 7.69% (Round 1)

Ranking History: 24-23-51-45

In 45th place we have another DS favourite, Simon Barlow! Simon has actually managed to rise slightly from last year after his disastrous drop to the bottom 15, which suggests the hate that people had for him last year may have died down a bit. As usual, we’ve probably seen more of him than the other children over the past years, as he’s played big roles in the relationships between Leanne and Nick, Carla and Peter and Peter and Tina. Most recently we’ve also seen him become a victim to the wrath of Faye and Grace in the bullying storyline. I do get where the disdain towards Simon is coming from, he can come across as highly irritating and precocious at times and similarly to Chesney, I don’t think the character is adapting too well to growing up now he is now longer the cute and funny boy that everybody loved. Having said that, I do think Alex Bain is a great actor for his age and there still definitely is a lot of love out there for Simon. Will Simon be able to reignite more of that love over the next year?

44 (52) Craig Tinker 7.89% (Round 1)

Ranking History: X-X-52-44

Craig manages a slight rise this year and gets to 44th! Finishing just one place above Simon, this also makes Craig the highest ranked child character! I really like the character of Craig and I think he’s developing nicely, he can be funny at times but the actor has also shown he isn't too bad at the more dramatic side of things as well. He doesn’t appear a whole lot so I wouldn’t really say he deserves a higher ranking than this, however he was a big part of the events that led up to the Karl reveal so we saw a bit more of him then. I really like the Beth/Kirk/Craig set up and looking forward to seeing more of it throughout the year!

43 (N/A) Todd Grimshaw 7.96% (Round 1)

Ranking History: X-X-X-43

Ranking for the first time in this competition at 43, we have returnee Todd Grimshaw. Todd was always a popular character so I had imagined he would have ranked higher than this and been a contender for the top 30, however it does seem like his return has not gone down as well as it could have. He seems to have had a bit of a personality transplant during his time away and now seems to be developing into more of a villainous character! So far we’ve seen him try and worm his way back into the street after losing his lucrative job in London and losing all his money, and most recently we’ve seen him become involved in the Marcus/Maria relationship where he's tried to catch Marcus' eye. Whilst Todd seems different, I quite like the way he’s developed as a character since his return and I think he will rise in popularity throughout the year.

Thank you for all of this, I am really enjoying reading your write-ups. I'm #TeamSally by the way.

42 (N/A) Tim Metcalfe 8.09% (Round 1)

Ranking History: X-X-X-42

Debuting with a respectable ranking of 42nd place, we have Tim Metcalfe! Tim first appeared on the street to meet his biological daughter Faye, and most of his initial storylines revolved around that and his pretty awful parenting of her. More recently, we’ve seen him start a relationship with Sally and most of his storylines/screen time have involved that. I really didn’t like Tim when he first appeared and was on Anna’s side during the whole Faye parenting debacle, however I’m finding that I’m starting to like him more and more as time goes on and I actually think his and Sally’s relationship works really well – even if I’m not really sure where it’s supposed to be heading. I think it will be interesting to see how Tim progresses in the coming year and how the return of Kevin impacts on him and his relationship with Sally!
MrJames

Aww I really like Tim! He works well in the Webster setup and even makes Sophie seem marginally likable.

41 (N/A) Andrea Beckett 8.27% (Round 1)

Ranking History: X-X-X-41

Just missing the top 40 but ranking 2nd highest out of the newcomers, we have Andrea Beckett! I was actually surprised that Andrea was able to rank so highly, she hasn’t been seen a whole lot and I thought the casting of Hayley Tamaddon would naturally evoke an instant dislike to the character on DS, however this seems to show that the response is relatively good so far! I’m enjoying Andrea so far, I’ve actually always like Hayley Tamaddon and I think the character seems nice, I like her relationship with Steve – it’s nice to see someone actually treat him well and she proves a nice antithesis to Michelle. So far we’ve mostly just seen her chatting to Steve as Michelle looks on indignantly, and more recently she’s started to take an interest in Lloyd. How will the character of Andrea develop throughout the year?

40 (30) Gary Windass 8.43% (Round 1)

Ranking History: 19-21-30-40

Dropping 10 places and with his worst ranking to date, we have Gary Windass. Most of the Windass clan seem to have had a significant drop in rankings this year so Gary’s not alone. In the past year we’ve seen Gary become a dad, however it wasn’t easy getting there after a pass at Tina meant his relationship with Izzy was in jeopardy, and later it seemed like he wasn’t going to get to see the baby at all after Tina refused to give it back! Luckily she did in the end and it was pretty much plain sailing from then on, although it looks like Gary may be getting involved in some bigger storylines again with the arrival of Phelan and the storyline surrounding the mill. I think Gary didn’t come across that well during the surrogacy storyline, particularly when he made a pass at Tina! However I actually prefer him as a character nowadays compared to the days when he was verging on mentally unstable and wouldn’t let Izzy leave the house, so I am a little surprised that he’s dropped so much and is doing so poorly in comparison to his first ranking in this competition. Then again I’m not really in agreement with the Windasses decline in popularity so there you go

=38 (22) Anna Windass 8.52% (Round 1)

Ranking History: 31-14-22-38

From one Windass with a big drop in ranking to another, we have Anna Windass in joint 38th place! I can understand why Anna has dropped in popularity, in previous years she’s generally been portrayed as incredibly nice and reasonable and this year we’ve been exposed to some of the less favourable aspects of her personality. She comes across as very moody nowadays and can often be seen shouting at another character for some reason. However, I do have to say I do usually find her anger justifiable although she does go a little too far with it at times! I think her association with the severely unpopular Faye and way of parenting her also contributes to her decrease in popularity. I think her performance in the latter part of the Roy/Hayley storyline has redeemed her a bit, particularly in the episode of the death and the episodes just after. Anna has had a pretty big year, mostly chasing after her children and dealing with their troubles but we’ve also seen her relationship with Owen develop. What will 2014 bring for Anna?

Loving your write ups Niall - thanks so much for doing this!

No major surprises for me so far, Tina is very low but as expected as she has been unbearable last year, big drops for Anna and Gary too, Anna though has potential to rise back up again, she is a good character and has been good again of late. Glad to see Tim do relatively well, I think he is actually growing fantastically as a character and has great chemistry with Sally and Sophie - please producers do not cast him away in favour of Kevin as he is a good character and please recognise his potential!!

=38 (29) Maria Connor 8.52% (Round 1)

Ranking History: 33-27-29-38

Finishing in joint 38th place with Anna and the 3rd character in a row to drop from the top 30 is Maria Connor. Maria’s drop isn’t really surprising, she’s rarely been seen in the past year and hasn’t really done anything of note. I think since she got together with Marcus the character seems to have plateaued, it seemed a big deal that she and Marcus got together got together considering he always thought he was completely gay but it didn’t seem like the writers had any proper plans about how the relationship would go after that. I can’t actually think of a proper storyline Maria’s had in the past year, except for maybe the thing about her flat needing work done on it but that was hardly a major storyline and didn’t seem to last long. She’s mostly been seen in brief scenes with Marcus or at the hairdresser, but even those have been sparse and when the character appearance list for the whole of 2013 came out I think she was near the bottom amongst the child characters! It does seem like Maria might have a slightly bigger 2014 with a big storyline coming up, will her ranking next year reflect that?

37 (47) Rob Donavan 8.54% (Round 1)

Ranking History: X-X-47-37

Rob Donavan manages to move up 10 places this year! This time last year I severely disliked Rob, he was a massive disappointment as the character of Carla’s brother had loads of potential and he just came across as really annoyingly smug and unlikeable. I do think he’s improved in the past year, however. I’m glad he no longer works in the factory as it really annoyed me how smug and superior he acted towards everyone else there considering he was lucky that Carla actually let him work there, and the scam he played on Carla with the silk definitely intensified my dislike for him. Most recently I think we’ve actually seen a slightly more pleasant side to him and I think his new business suits him well. I think the relationship with Tracy actually works well with him in terms of making him seem like a better human being, as anyone would appear that way when compared to Tracy Barlow! Will Rob be able to rise further up the rankings next year?
_NiallDEE_
12-02-2014
36 (41) Tracy Barlow 8.72% (Round 1)

Ranking History: 42-45-41-36

Finishing one place above her beau and gaining her highest ranking to date, we have Tracy Barlow! I think for me Tracy is perhaps the most unrealistic character on the show, absolutely heartless with no redeeming features at all, and even her own mother doesn’t seem to be able to stand her! However, I think I’ve begun to accept Tracy as being this massive caricature of a soap bitch and actually begun to liker her somewhat! I think I just find her funny now, how inexplicably horrible she is to everyone and she does have a good one liner now and again. I just see Tracy now as a bit of comic relief and forget all the terrible stuff she’s done such as murder etc, as she’s not a realistic character and probably shouldn’t be treated like she is. Over the past year we’ve seen Tracy settle down with new boyfriend Rob, start a new business and garner a plethora of new enemies! How many more feuds will she start in 2014?

35 (26) Kevin Webster 8.79% (Round 1)

Ranking History: 37-28-26-35

Dropping down from last year and in 35th place, we have Kevin Webster. Consider the fact that Kevin’s barely featured in the year, I think he’s still held up pretty well. Obviously extenuating circumstances got in the way and prevented Kevin from being able to appear on the show any longer. Unfortunately these occurred when Kevin was playing a pivotal part in the Kirsty/Tyrone storyline so lots of things had to be switched around to make up for his absence, and they’re still currently under the guise that Kevin is in Germany helping out with his father. I think the fact that Kevin’s scenes had to be cut out also meant we got that delightful Flash the tortoise storyline with Lloyd and Mandy, definitely a highlight of the year Michael Le Vell’s charges have been cleared up now so we will be seeing Kevin on the street again soon, will be interesting to see what effect his return has on the street!

34 (N/A) Sinead Tinker 8.86% (Round 1)

Ranking History: X-X-X-34

In 34th place and ranking the highest out of the newcomers, we have Sinead Tinker! I must say, considering she’s a newcomer and hasn’t exactly had the biggest entrance, I think Sinead’s done pretty well in the rankings! She was pretty close to making the top 5 in her original heat if I remember correctly as well. We’ve seen Sinead integrate quite slowly into the street so far, originally coming to visit Beth, now most of her scenes and storylines involve Chesney – who she has started a relationship with and is now living with! I’m really liking Sinead so far, she definitely seems like a very genuine and down to earth character and I like the fact that she’s a bit quirky and a bit different compared to the carbon copy of existing characters that newcomers often appear to be. Hopefully the relationship with Chesney doesn’t drag her down as he’s not that much of a popular character on here, but so far I like what I see with Sinead!

33 (32) Kirk Sutherland 8.91% (Round 1)

Ranking History: 39-33-32-33

Kirk manages to stay in pretty much the same position for the third year in the row! I used to not see the point in Kirk but he’s definitely grown on me throughout the years. I really think his relationship with Beth and the whole Kirk/Beth/Craig set up works really well, and whilst he doesn’t really have any major storylines I think he works well as a background character – not every character has to have big storylines and take centre stage so I think it’s good to have characters like Kirk. We’ve seen him develop as a father figure for Craig throughout the year, as well as providing some comic moments and generally being seen in the background of scenes throughout the year. What will 2014 bring for Kirk?
_NiallDEE_
12-02-2014
32 (37) Dennis Tanner 9.22% (Round 1)

Ranking History: X-32-37-32

Dennis manages to get back to his debut position of 32, but does not manage to get back into the top 30! I’ve really liked having Dennis on the street, it gives a great link to the history of the show and he works well with the dynamic of the other older characters. I was therefore really upset to hear of his axing in the show, also quite perplexed as it seemed to come out of nowhere and I can’t really think of much good reason for it happening – there’s definitely quite a few characters that I would have axed before Dennis! Most recently we’ve seen Dennis get back involved with his rock management past and reacquaint himself with old friend Ritchie de Vries, as well as growing closer to Gloria, much to the dismay of wife Rita! Will Dennis’ involvement with Ritchie and Gloria mean bad news for his predicament on the street?
_NiallDEE_

31 (36) Lloyd Mullaney 9.58% (Round 1)

Ranking History: 38-X-36-31

Just missing out on a top 30 placing, we have Lloyd Mullaney! Considering the characters Lloyd’s been associated with in the past year, his daughter Jenna and girlfriend Mandy who weren’t exactly the biggest successes, and the storylines he’s had such as the terrible racism storyline which was perhaps the worst storyline of the year – it’s actually surprising that Lloyd’s managed to rise this year! I think he has remained consistent despite all of this thpigh, and still remains a good character, hence the high ranking. 2013 has mostly seen the development of Lloyd’s relationship with his newfound daughter Jenna, as well as the breakdown of his relationship with Mandy. His biggest storyline apart from that was his feud with Paul Kershaw who he believed to have made a racist comment around his daughter, and I think the less said about that storyline the better After hovering around the top 30 for years, will Lloyd finally be able to make it next year?

Unlike most people, I am disappointed with the low placings of Tina, Michelle and Sean amongst others. They all rank in my Top 20 and Tina is my personal number 1, but for some reason they're disliked by the majority of people so nothing can be done.

Thanks for doing this Niall - love the effort you're putting into the little paragraphs about each character.
