30 (45) Gloria Price 9.46% (Round 2)

Ranking History: X-X-45-30

Kicking off the top 30 we have Gloria Price! Despite getting the lowest percentage out of every character in Round 2, Gloria actually manages to rise by quite a few spaces this year. Gloria hasn’t really had a storyline of her own since the one with the Timothy West character when she first arrived. However, she has played pretty big parts in the storylines of others, most notably the Stella/Karl storyline. Other than that she’s usually seen as a comedy character, making the odd one liner that is usually ends up insulting another character! I think Gloria works well as a comedy character and has some brilliant one liners, I can’t help feel that there was so much potential with the character and actress that was never fulfilled however, and looks like it never will be fulfilled due to the announcement of her leaving the show. With Gloria taking an interest in Dennis most recently, what will this mean for her future on the show?

29 (28) Marcus Dent 9.84% (Round 2)

Ranking History: X-40-28-29

Marcus finishes in 28th place, pretty much the same place that he finished last year! Since Marcus’ shock relationship with Maria started in late 2012, we’ve seen a relatively quiet year for Marcus and against all odds, he’s seemed to have a pretty happy year with her! However that looks set to change with the arrival of Todd to the street, will Marcus give in to temptation or stay loyal to Maria? I’ve always liked the character of Marcus and thought he’s a good representation of an LGBT character on the street, however he has become a bit redundant over the past year but I still enjoy most of the scene’s he’s in. With Marcus looking set to head off later this year, how will the year pan out for him?

28 (35) Nick Tilsley 9.90% (Round 2)

Ranking History: 47-36-35-28

Nick continues to rise year on year, and manages to make the top 30 for the first time with his highest ranking to date! Safe to say it’s been a pretty big year for Nick so this rise is hardly surprising. The Platt family have really taken centre stage over the past year and have pretty much all managed to rank well this year. We saw Nick finally manage to marry love of his life Leanne earlier on in 2013, but he was still full of guilt over his one night stand with his brother’s wife Kylie. The affair has of course led to massive consequences, eventually leading to him fighting for his life in a coma after suffering from a car accident. He recovered from the coma but things haven’t exactly been simple with the revelation of his one night stand with Kylie and David’s involvement with the car accident, as well as the car crash having a detrimental effect on his behaviour and most recently leading to the breakdown of his marriage with Leanne! Personally I wouldn’t rank Nick this high, I don’t rate Ben Price as an actor at all and I’ve never really found Nick too likeable. I was definitely expecting him to make the top 30 this year though considering how big a part of the show he’s been over the past year. It’s safe to say the character of Nick is now in a pretty bad place, will he be able to turn things around?

27 (19) Ken Barlow 10.43% (Round 2)

Ranking History: 21-22-19-27

Ken drops slightly this year after usually staying around the top 20, but still manages to rank inside the top 30! I’d say considering the year he’s had and the fact that extenuating circumstances have led to Ken hardly being seen this year, he’s managed to maintain a pretty good ranking! Not a whole lot to say about Ken’s involvement in the past year, obvious reasons meant he hasn’t been seen for most of the year and when he was seen he wasn’t really doing anything major and was mostly in the background of scenes. I’m glad to see that Bill Roache has been found not guilty, although it’s terrible that he had to go through all of that in the first place. Looking forward to hopefully seeing Ken back on the street in the next year, although his absence hasn’t had a big effect on the show or the characters he’s most closely involved with, it hasn’t felt right without Ken being there!

26 (23) Julie Carp 11.64% (Round 2)

Ranking History: 11-16-23-26

Despite maintaining a good ranking, Julie actually drops further down this year to get her worst ranking to date! To be completely honest I’m surprised she’s dropped, as this time last year was during the Kirsty/Tyrone storyline and she wasn’t exactly seen in the best light by DS during that point, I think I had imagined that she ranked lower last year! After being left red faced by the revelation that her friend Kirsty had actually been beating Tyrone towards the beginning of the year, the biggest storyline Julie has had this year has probably been her attempt to fulfil her desire to have children by trying to become a foster parent. However unbeknownst to her, her partner Brian was very much against the idea and cancelled their application in secret! Julie was incredibly angered by this and ended her relationship with Brian, leaving her in a state of heartbreak once again! Will things be on the up for Julie over the next year?

25 (48) Owen Armstrong 12.65% (Round 2)

Ranking History: 55-39-48-25

With a massive rise and his highest ranking by a considerable margin, we have Owen Armstrong at 25! Interestingly pretty much all the other Armstrong/Windass characters have suffered quite considerable drops, whilst it’s been the opposite for Owen. I’m glad to see Owen get this placing as I think he’s always been a bit of an underrated character before, I think he had a bit of a rocky start and didn’t exactly come across as the nicest of characters, but things have changed since then and I think he’s developed well. I’d actually say that in a cast that is dominated by female characters, he’s one of the stronger male characters. We’ve seen Owen take on quite a lot in the past year as his surrounding family have faced their fair share of problems, from the surrogacy saga with Tina to his tempestuous relationship with Faye. Most recently we’ve seen him face problems of his own as the business deal he’s got involved with looks too good to be true, but how will Owen cope if it all goes wrong?

24 (59) Dev Alahan 12.93% (Round 2)

Ranking History: 54-49-59-24

From one character with a big rise in rankings to another, we have Dev Alahan! Dev has had the biggest rise out of every character this year, and he’s done pretty well to get a top 30 placing after being just two spots away from the bottom 5 last year! I think his rise partly comes from the sympathy for the character after the death of Sunita and his takedown of Karl after becoming rightfully convinced that it was him who killed Sunita! I think also in general he’s become a much more interesting and likeable character this year, although I have to say I was surprised at how well he did this year considering how bad he fared in all the other years! It’s been a pretty hard year for Dev, after first having to come to terms with the breakdown of his relationship with Sunita and then matters becoming even worse after her death! He seems to be able to be getting back on track now as he plans to start a new business with Kal and seems to have his eyes set on a relationship with Stella, but will he be able to stay on the right track?

23 (21) Stella Price 13.73% (Round 2)

Ranking History: X-25-21-23

Stella has a slight drop this year, but stays around the same spot she’s occupied for the past 3 years. It’s been a bit of a strange year for Stella, she’s gone from being the centremost character of the street to a seldom seen background character! After coming to terms with the breakdown of her relationship with Karl after the revelation of his relationship with Sunita, a spanner was thrown into the works after Karl saved Stella’s life during the Rovers fire (which he actually caused) and she decided to re-embark on a relationship with him. Unfortunately for Stella this just left to further heartbreak after she found out about the horrible crimes he committed, leaving Karl in his prison and Stella disgusted at herself for getting involved with him. After that she quite randomly decided to leave the Rovers and go and work for her daughter Leanne in the bistro, where she’s barely been seen and has a greatly reduced role compared to her stint as landlady at the Rovers which saw her get involved in pretty much every storyline! I’m not really sure what Blackburn’s doing with Stella, she’s played such a pivotal role in the past few years it seems odd that she’s getting so little to do on her last few months on the street. I know not everyone liked her and there was a bit of a running joke on this forum about how much she got involved with everyone else’s storylines, but personally I really liked the character and will be sad to see her leave, I hope she gets a good few last months!

22 (24) Emily Bishop 13.76% (Round 2)

Ranking History: 29-26-24-22

Emily actually gets her best ranking to date here as she rises on up to 22nd place! Emily’s role on the street is very much reduced, she hasn’t had any major storylines in a while and the biggest thing that’s happened to her this year was signing over her house to Norris as he became landlord! I do always enjoy scenes that Emily’s in and she works well with lots of the other character, I think despite the fact that she’s no longer plays a big role in the street it’s great to have her around due to all the links she has with the show and the fact that she’s such a long standing character! I hope we have Emily on the street for a good few years more.

21 (15) Tyrone Dobbs 13.87% (Round 2)

Ranking History: 27-19-15-21

After getting a top 15 ranking last year, Tyrone drops back down to 21st place. The year started off pretty dramatically for Tyrone, things went from bad to worse with his relationship with Kirsty after she found out he was carrying on with Fiz and as a result of things he ended up in prison accused of domestic abuse! Luckily for him Kirsty confessed and everything turned out right, Tyrone ended up happily living with Fiz and Ruby whilst Kirsty went to jail. Since then it’s definitely been a much smoother ride for Tyrone, his relationship with Fiz has been plain sailing so far and he got a bit involved with the Roy and Hayley storyline and some other minor stuff but nothing else apart from that. He is running the risk of becoming a bit of a deadwood character and his relationship with Fiz probably doesn’t do much for his popularity on here, however I think it’s probably right that he’s going through a calm stage at the moment after dominating the soap for months with the domestic abuse storyline and the Molly/Kevin affair before that, and I look forward to seeing what they planned for Tyrone in 2014!

Happy to see Dev and Stella reasonably ranked as I thought they were two of the more disliked characters on these forums. Shame not to see them rank as highly as my Top 10 finish for them both, but it's still a decent ranking for them.

20 (33) Eva Price 13.99% (Round 2)

Ranking History: X-48-33-20

Eva kicks of the top 20 in her highest ranking to date! Eva is a character who I think has definitely improved over her time on the show, she’s started to settle in better and definitely has the makings of a Corrie legend so I think her rise is definitely deserved! The past year hasn’t been too dramatic for Eva herself, (by Corrie standards at least) we’ve seen her recently begin a relationship with Jason Grimshaw and get a promotion at underworld to become Peter’s personal assistant! However it’s definitely been an action packed year for those around Eva and she’s needed to lend a hand of support quite a few times – particularly for her mother Leanne after the Rovers burnt down and Karl’s murderous truth was revealed! As well as this Eva even got involved in the whole Platt family drama, due to her being Leanne’s sister and Kylie’s best mate. Eva can be a great comedy character but I think the actress seems good and she’d be able to adapt well to some more dramatic storylines, so I’m interested to see how the character develops further this year – particularly with the exit of lots of the characters who she’s most closely been involved with!

19 (N/A) Liz McDonald 13.99% (Round 2)

Ranking History: 32-X-X-19

Despite her absence, Liz actually manages to rise a fair bit from her ranking of 32nd place in the first year of the competition! I think Liz did badly a few years ago as it was during a time when she’d been off-screen for ages, however I was surprised she got a top 20 placing this year as her return has mostly been deemed as pointless – I do still think it’s good having her back on the street and seeing her interact with characters such as Deirdre, even if she hasn’t really done anything major since she got back. She is also the highest ranked character not in the competition last year, meaning she is the popular inclusion to the street over the past year. We initially saw Liz involved in some drama after it was revealed she was new landlady of the Rovers, unbeknownst to Michelle who as you can imagine had a field day and did what she did best – moan Since then she’s appeared to quite seamlessly integrate herself back into the street, involved quite a lot on screen due to her role in the rovers and has most recently got more involved with the Tina/Peter storyline, being the only one other than them who knows about the affair. I have always liked Liz and I like the fact she’s back on the street, even though I don’t like it when she teams up with Michelle to bully Steve – stating that at times she feels that she wishes she never gave birth to him was maybe a step too far But overall I’m happy to see her back on the street and I look forward to seeing what’s next for Liz!

18 (13) Peter Barlow 15.25% (Round 2)

Ranking History: 3-5-13-18

After dramatically dropping out of the top 10, Peter drops further down this year to 18th place! I don’t think I need to need to spell out why he’s dropped to his worst ranking this year but I will anyway – Tina. The Peter/Tina storyline has probably been the most hated Corrie storyline on DS this year, mostly due to the fact the pairing is incredibly unrealistic and the immorality of both characters involved in it, and it’s had a negative impact on both Peter and Tina’s rankings. Personally for me Peter’s come across worse in it than Tina, although she gets a lot of stick as DS were already sick of her before the storyline started As well as the Tina affair, we’ve also seen Peter marry Carla and become joint owner of Underworld after he was forced to shut the bookies. I still think Peter is a good character, he’s very complex and well acted – however I think for me and many others he’s just become too unlikeable with recent storylines. I think lots of the interest in the character has gone after seeing him regress back to his unfaithful ways instead of developing and staying faithful to Carla. He does clearly still have his fans though, as I think any other character involved in this story would have got a worse ranking!

Another component of my Top 10, I was disappointed not to see Peter make it but can understand why due to the affair with Tina; for me though it's an exciting storyline that I'm gripped by.

17 (25) Jason Grimshaw 16.02% (Round 2)

Ranking History: 18-30-25-17

Jason has a big rise from last year and manages to get his best ranking to date in 17th place! We originally saw that Jason has a taste for the older woman after he started off 2013 in a relationship with Stella Price, however interestingly it is her daughter Eva who he’s now ended up with after Karl caused the breakdown of his relationship with Stella. As well as this we’ve seen Jason play a big part in the downfall of Karl after become determined to prove that it was him who caused the fire, and most recently we’ve seen his dad turn up out of nowhere, hoping to start a proper relationship with him! Jason and Eva seem to be a popular pairing with both of them having big rises this year, so I hope they stay together this year and don’t go in the same way all of Jason’s other past relationships have gone!

Very happy to see Ken Barlow's excellent rating, considering we've not seen him on screen for over year.

Also glad to see that St Stella remains rather a meh character in spite of all her dramas.

16 (18) Eileen Grimshaw (Round 2)

Ranking History: 2-11-18-16

Just missing out on the top 15 but rising a small amount, we have Eileen Grimshaw ranking just one place above her son! The past year has actually be relatively busy for Eileen, initially the Rovers fire caused a big rift in her relationship with Paul. Firstly it meant we lost the legendary, iconic Toni (Who I’m sure would have won this whole thing by a landslide had she been eligible ) and it also caused Eileen to become scared that Paul himself would die in an accident if he continued his occupation as a fireman. This resulted in Eileen probing Paul to quit and them breaking up for a bit, however they soon got back together and it wasn’t until that awful ‘play the white man’ racism storyline that ended their relationship for good, as Paul left Weatherfield. Personally I’m glad that Paul has gone, I thought he was an awful character and the fact that Eileen was lumbered was really bad for her as a character. I think she works better without him but I still don’t think she’s in her best state as a character ever, all we ever see her do is moan and she comes across as slightly depressing now. I really long for the character to get back to the place she was a few years ago, where she was able to get 2nd place in this and she was even pretty close to winning the whole thing!

15 (16) Beth Tinker 3.90% (Top 15)

Ranking History: X-52-16-15

Kicking off the top 15 we have Beth Tinker, who despite making it a whole round further this year, only rises one place! I’ve loved Beth since the moment she first appeared on Corrie so I’m really glad to see her gaining popularity. Throughout the year we’ve seen Beth’s relationship with Kirk develop and a nice family unit with her, him and Craig has been set up. As well as this we’ve seen the usual woes of her life as a parent and worker, including her worrying about Craig earlier on in the year after he believed he set fire to the rovers and most recently getting sacked at Underworld! Beth isn’t a character with massive, show stopping storylines but I think she works brilliant as a comedy character and I don’t really want her to become anything more. She’s not to everyone’s tastes but for me she’s one of the funniest on Corrie, and I think she really enriches the show and the dynamic between her and the other factory girls is great. Hopefully we get to see a lot more of Beth in the coming year!

14 (11) Rita Tanner 3.92% (Top 15)

Ranking History: 13-8-11-14

Rita drops down slightly but still maintains a good ranking of 14th place. I was actually expecting Rita to drop further as there definitely seems to be a lot more animosity towards her on the forum and lots of people seem to have gone off her over the past year, so I’d still say this a pretty good place for her all things considered. Over the past year we’ve seen Rita play a supporting role in the many storylines of Tina McIntyre, which has resulted in her having her a fair share of screen time herself! Her involvement with Tina even led to further distress after she was victimised by a ‘gang of thugs’ after she went looking for her at the Red Rec. As well as this we’ve most recently seen her marriage to Dennis put after threat after she expressed disapproval with his new career choice and him increasingly getting closer to Gloria Price! I think Tina’s unpopularity on this forum rubs off a bit on Rita and people don’t seem to like her treatment of Dennis, I can see people’s points on these matters but I’ve always really liked the character of Rita and still do, she has great links to the history of the show and I hope we get to keep Rita for a good few years. With the two characters closest to her set to leave, I’m interested to see what’s lined up next for Rita!
