15 (16) Beth Tinker 3.90% (Top 15)
Ranking History: X-52-16-15 Kicking off the top 15 we have Beth Tinker, who despite making it a whole round further this year, only rises one place! I’ve loved Beth since the moment she first appeared on Corrie so I’m really glad to see her gaining popularity. Throughout the year we’ve seen Beth’s relationship with Kirk develop and a nice family unit with her, him and Craig has been set up. As well as this we’ve seen the usual woes of her life as a parent and worker, including her worrying about Craig earlier on in the year after he believed he set fire to the rovers and most recently getting sacked at Underworld! Beth isn’t a character with massive, show stopping storylines but I think she works brilliant as a comedy character and I don’t really want her to become anything more. She’s not to everyone’s tastes but for me she’s one of the funniest on Corrie, and I think she really enriches the show and the dynamic between her and the other factory girls is great. Hopefully we get to see a lot more of Beth in the coming year! |

13 (10) Leanne Tilsley 5.83% (Top 15)
Ranking History: 4-3-10-13 Leanne drops out of the top 10 for the first time to 13th place. It’s been another big year for Leanne, she eventually got to marry Nick earlier on in the year – however it definitely wasn’t plain sailing after that, after Nick was involved in a car accident and ended up in a coma, she wasn’t sure if she was going to lose her husband before their first year anniversary! Nick eventually recovered, however to make matters worse the Kylie/Nick affair was revealed to Leanne which left her in doubts over what to do with her marriage. Eventually decided it was not worth breaking up her marriage for, but as life got increasingly difficult living with Nick’s brain damage and sick of the amount of sacrifices she had to make for him, Leanne eventually decided to call it quits and is now currently separated from him. Personally I’m much happier with the way Leanne has been written in the past year compared to before so I’m a little disappointed to see her drop, she’s always been one of my favourite characters but I felt she was becoming a victim of the awful bossy and moaning writing female characters often get in Corrie – I felt she turned it around this year and I really liked the way she tried to cope with Nick’s ordeal and I like the development in the character. I think some viewers have had the opposite reaction and started to get sick of the character as she was lumbered with Nick, however I’m interested to see where the writer’s take Leanne now and hoping we get some of her feisty, old self back! |

I find I'm agreeing with all of your analysis so far. Thanks for this - it's a great read and snapshot of the last year.

Leanne is one of the show's most solid characters and you can never go wrong with Jane Danson at the helm.

12 (5) David Platt 5.98% (Top 15)
Ranking History: 20-17-5-12 David drops down from his top 5 ranking last year, but still manages a respectable placing of 12th. I was actually really surprised with David’s ranking this year, considering that most of DS seemed to side with him during the Kylie/Nick storyline, I was expecting him to be a strong contender to win and I’m really surprised that he’s been beaten by Kylie and Gail, when most of DS sided against them! He is a polarising character, however, and had quite a few lower rankings so that probably explains his ranking. It’s been a very big year for David as the Platt’s took centre stage. It looked to be a happy year for David for the prospective birth of his daughter, however that was soon ruined after he found out about the one night stand between his brother Nick and wife Kylie! David started some kind of hate campaign towards Nick after finding out, which eventually led to Nick being placed in a critical condition and near to death! This caused further problems for David as his family turned against him when they found out, and he was banned from seeing Max and Lily by Kylie. Thankfully the storyline seems to have come to a close and David and Kylie are back together and living happily, but will they maintain that for the rest of the year? |

11 (12) Steve McDonald 6.25% (Top 15)
Ranking History: 5-9-12-11 Steve just misses out on the top 10, but still manages to rise a place from last year! Steve looked a contender to win in the first few rounds but his support seemed to dissolve a bit towards the end. In the past year we’ve seen Steve carry on his relationship with Michelle, and return to the helm of the Rovers as owner once more, alongside his mother. Most recently we’ve seen him struggle with his conflicting emotions towards his new friend and new character, Andrea. For me, I think the fact that Michelle becoming an absolute monstrosity in the past year has evoked some new found sympathy for Steve for me and I feel like I appreciate him more as a character! I think it could have a detrimental effect on him as a character as well, however, as the association with Michelle could turn people off him due to her unpopularity! I personally hoping he starts a relationship with Andrea, I think they’d make a good couple and I think Michelle deserves to suffer after the way she’s acted the past year

What has happened to Michelle??
I know she has never been a favourite on here but she was great with Carla. Now all she does in the Rovers is whinge, moan and rant at Steve. |

Agree with your analysis of Rita and Eileen - previously two of my favourite Corrie characters who they have really lost their way with.
Both of them were initially good-hearted and humorous, especially so during squabbles or arguments with other characters, but they both now seem cantankerous and petty and have lost the ability to see the funny side of things, as they have morphed into they typical Corrie two-dimensional female. A real shame. Thanks for doing this Niall! |

24 (59) Dev Alahan 12.93% (Round 2)
Ranking History: 54-49-59-24 From one character with a big rise in rankings to another, we have Dev Alahan! Dev has had the biggest rise out of every character this year, and he’s done pretty well to get a top 30 placing after being just two spots away from the bottom 5 last year! I think his rise partly comes from the sympathy for the character after the death of Sunita and his takedown of Karl after becoming rightfully convinced that it was him who killed Sunita! I think also in general he’s become a much more interesting and likeable character this year, although I have to say I was surprised at how well he did this year considering how bad he fared in all the other years! It’s been a pretty hard year for Dev, after first having to come to terms with the breakdown of his relationship with Sunita and then matters becoming even worse after her death! He seems to be able to be getting back on track now as he plans to start a new business with Kal and seems to have his eyes set on a relationship with Stella, but will he be able to stay on the right track? well done Dev!... you could end up being a forum favourite yet

Leanne and David were in my top 6 so sad to see them out, but I still have 4 of my top 6 left!
Its go on the Gals for me - Gail, Sally, Deirdre and Audrey! I suspect it could be a Carla win but I hope not as she was kind of head wrecking in the Hayley storyline, as was Hayley herself so hoping she isn't a winner either! |

10 (1) Kylie Platt 464 Points (Final Round)
Ranking History: 41-7-1-10 Finishing in 10th place and reversing her top 10 position from last year, its last year’s winner Kylie Platt! Despite topping the whole thing last year, I think Kylie was actually quite lucky to maintain a top 10 ranking considering the year she’s had and the reaction to her on here. I think luckily for her the competition took place when she was back with David and starting to redeem herself in the eyes of the audiences, if it had happened during November/December last year she probably would have done even worse! Kylie was bottom of the top 10 by quite a considerable margin for most of the vote, but she did pick up towards the end. In the past year we’ve seen Kylie take centre stage during the Platt drama – it was her affair with Nick that eventually led to the car crash and she was the main driving force in the Platt anti David movement that dominated Corrie for the latter parts of the months. I think Kylie has developed into a brilliant character in the past few years and she’s definitely one of my favourites, however even I got annoyed with the way she was acting during the storyline. I understood it at first but I think the length of time she kept her vitriol was too long, and the storyline just became annoying repetitive towards the end. I think Kylie’s in a much better place now she’s back with David, they’re definitely one of my favourite couples on the show, they work brilliantly together so I hope they have a happier year in 2014! |
