Aww I wanted Carla to win, but 3rd is still really great! Poor Carla, Peter might have taken her up the aisle but now he's taking her up the garden path
. Hopefully, seeing as the orange tart won't be around, she will take her revenge out on on the curly turd by throwing the little git in a car compactor

Fairly happy with those rankings so far, although it's a shame Carla didn't win. It's hard to see past Roy winning now, but Deirdre might surprise us!

3 (6) Carla Barlow 668 Points (Final Round)
Ranking History: 1-2-6-3 The winner of the 2011 competition, Carla Barlow, manages to jump back up 3 places! I think Carla is the most consistently highly ranked character since this competition started, with 6 being the highest lowest ranking out of everyone, as well as the fact that she’s now managed to make the top 3 for the third time! In the past year we’ve seen Carla’s friendship with Hayley develop just before Hayley passed away, I think we got some brilliant scenes between Hayley and Carla before Hayley’s last appearance! As well as that, we finally saw Peter Barlow take her up to the aisle! Carla may think all her dreams have been answered by marrying Peter – however she doesn’t seem to be able to see what’s lurking around the corner, and she may be set up for more heartbreak after the Peter and Tina affair is revealed. I definitely think Carla is one of the best additions to Corrie in the 21st century, such a unique character but one that is able to fit into the show so well. There’s so many different dimensions to the characters, most notably the tough exterior with the more sensitive and vulnerable interior that we occasionally get to see. She also always brings a touch of much needed glamour to the street, is brilliantly played by Ali King and in general a brilliant and fascinating storyline to watch. I’m no more a fan of the Peter and Tina affair than anyone else but I’m interested to see how Carla reacts to it, and have no doubt Alison King will blow me away once again!

Which means it's between Deirdre Barlow and Roy Cropper to take the title and become Your Favourite Coronation Street Character 2014 - becoming the oldest winner of this competition by some margin!

2 (9) Deirdre Barlow 687 Points (Final Round)
Ranking History: 17-13-9-2 She didn’t quite manage to get the win, but Deirdre’s managed to do amazingly well and is the runner up for Your Favourite Coronation Street Character 2014! I absolutely love Deirdre and I knew her popularity was increasing this year, but I still wasn’t expecting her to do well, especially after not even making the top 10 for the first two years of this competition! Deirdre’s been left in the lurch for a large proportion of the year due to Ken having to jet off to Canada – however it hasn’t done her any harm in the eyes of the viewer, it means we’ve seen Deirdre pop up at the most random of places often offering a hilarious one liner or anecdote and generally improving any scene she appears in – lots of viewers have commented that she works better without Ken! There definitely has been an improvement in the writing for Deirdre in the past year but I think most of the credit should go to Anne Kirkbride – she has absolutely brilliant comic timing and her delivery of the lines is just brilliant! For me Deirdre is currently the funniest character of the street, I literally laugh out loud at her and I’m delighted to see her get such a high ranking! It will be interesting to see what happens to her with the arrival of Ken, and if the writers will be able to keep her up to the same standard as when she was away, I personally don’t see why they can’t as I think the improvement of Deirdre as a character is merely a correlation with Ken’s absence, not a result of it. Deirdre performed excellently throughout all the rounds of voting but wasn’t quite able to get that elusive top spot in the end – will she be able to rise further to top place next year? Which means the winner is... |

1 (2) Roy Cropper 732 Points (Final Round)
Ranking History: 9-4-2-1 After just missing out last year, Roy manages to beat 65 characters to be named Your Favourite Coronation Street Character 2014! Roy definitely seemed one of the likely winners from the start from my point of view, he topped every round he was in by quite a considerable margin and the fact that he was runner up last year but has been much more praised as a character this year meant it seemed obvious that he’d rise up to the top – although Deirdre did give him a run for his money at some points of the competition! It’s been a massive year for Roy and his life has been completely turned upside down. Finding out that his beloved wife Hayley had cancer was absolutely devastating for Roy, and made even worse by her decision to cut her life even shorter by deciding to kill herself before the cancer gets too aggressive. Having just lost Hayley, it’s safe to say Roy is in a bad place and completely lost, and to make matters worse he now has to endure Fiz looking after him I know not everyone was the biggest fan of the cancer storyline but I think most people agree that David Nielson gave an absolutely exceptional performance during the whole thing. Roy doesn’t usually have dramatic storylines so David doesn’t really have the chance to shine, but this storyline has really shown what he’s capable of, his performance was utterly believable and so full of nuances and subtleties that are so rare in Soaps. I think he’s definitely earned his position as Corrie’s best actor now. It will be interesting to see where the character of Roy goes now, obviously he’s in a bad state right now but I kind of like what I’ve read about the future plans for him and I think we might see a bit more growth and development now he’s alone – although hopefully still staying true to the old Roy that everyone clearly loves! Will Roy be able to maintain the top spot in next year’s competition?

Yay!! Royston is the winner! Well done both to him and to David Neilson, a fantastic actor!
![]() ![]() And well done to Deirdre, a worthy second (and whom I believe has blossomed as a person in her own right without Ken)

Other characters gave a good fight, but in the end there was no match for our Royston Cropper and he went away with the crown! Will he be able to keep it next year? Or will Carla or Kylie be able to repeat their performances in 2011 and 2013 respectively? Or will we have a completely new winner?
I'd just like to say a big thank you to everyone who's voted and commented throughout this whole process, obviously I organise it all but without you none of this would go ahead so I am very grateful that people still continue to take an interest and vote, which makes the whole thing a lot more enjoyable for me Here are the full rankings, along with the characters placings and how much they've dropped or risen (no prizes for guessing the two characters with the biggest drops)1 (2) Roy Cropper (+1) 2 (9) Deirdre Barlow (+7) 3 (6) Carla Barlow (+4) 4 (8) Norris Cole (+4) 5 (4) Hayley Cropper (-1) 6 (20) Mary Taylor (+14) 7 (3) Audrey Roberts (-4) 8 (14) Gail McIntyre (+6) 9 (17) Sally Webster (+8) 10 (1) Kylie Platt (-9) 11 (12) Steve McDonald (+1) 12 (5) David Platt (-7) 13 (10) Leanne Tilsley (-3) 14 (11) Rita Tanner (-3) 15 (16) Beth Tinker (+1) 16 (18) Eileen Grimshaw (+2) 17 (25) Jason Grimshaw (+8) 18 (13) Peter Barlow (-5) 19 (N/A) Liz McDonald (NEW) 20 (33) Eva Price (+13) 21 (15) Tyrone Dobbs (-6) 22 (24) Emily Bishop (+2) 23 (21) Stella Price (-2) 24 (59) Dev Alahan (+35) HIGHEST RISER 25 (48) Owen Armstrong (+23) 26 (23) Julie Carp (-3) 27 (19) Ken Barlow (-8) 28 (35) Nick Tilsley (+7) 29 (28) Marcus Dent (-1) 30 (45) Gloria Price (+15) 31 (36) Lloyd Mullaney (+5) 32 (37) Dennis Tanner (+5) 33 (32) Kirk Sutherland (-1) 34 (N/A) Sinead Tinker (NEW) 35 (26) Kevin Webster (-11) 36 (41) Tracy Barlow (+5) 37 (47) Rob Donavan (+10) =38 (29) Maria Connor (-9) =38 (22) Anna Windass (-14) 40 (30) Gary Windass (-10) 41 (N/A) Andrea Beckett (NEW) 42 (N/A) Tim Metcalfe (NEW) 43 (N/A) Todd Grimshaw (NEW) 44 (52) Craig Tinker (+8) 45 (51) Simon Barlow (+6) 46 (44) Katy Armstrong (-2) 47 (43) Sophie Webster (-4) 48 (27) Tina McIntyre (-21) BIGGEST DROP 49 (N/A) Kal Nazir (NEW) 50 (38) Fiz Stape (-12) 51 (55) Max Turner (+4) 52 (53) Chesney Brown (+1) 53 (56) Amy Barlow (+3) 54 (46) Izzy Armstrong (-8) 55 (34) Michelle Connor (-21) BIGGEST DROP 56 (60) Faye Windass (+4) 57 (N/A) Steph Britton (NEW) 58 (62) Liam Connor Jr (+4) 59 (61) Jenna Kamara (+2) 60 (58) Sean Tully (-2) 61 (65) Asha Alahan (+4) 62 (N/A) Maddie Heath (NEW) 63 (63) Aadi Alahan (=) 64 (N/A) Grace Piper (NEW) 65 (N/A) Hope Stape (NEW) 66 (N/A) Ritchie de Vries (NEW) |

Congratulations to Roy, probably deserved on the whole as he was brilliant throughout the cancer storyline, his facial expressions tell a whole story and that is what is so impressive about him.
Thanks very much for doing this Niall, and see you next year!

So happy for Deirdre - she is a legend and did so well at 2nd! Would loved to have seen Gail and Sal crack the top 5 but they did very well makig top 10!
Roy is a great character and although not my own absolute top favourite he is a totally worthy winner and for me was the absolulte star of the Hayely cancer story, well done to Roy! I have to say I am glad Carla and Hayley didn't win as they were definitely overpassed by a sublime Roy in the cancer storyline this year so a good result! And a huge huge thanks to Niall D for such an amazing competition, it was so much fun Niall and you were such a fab host, loved your summaries of each character in the final results, you have a career as a soap comentator for sure as they were fab! Look forward to next year! x |

Just realised I forgot to post the Top 15 rankings that were never revealed before:
1st Roy Cropper 8.92% 2nd Deirdre Barlow 8.43% 3rd Carla Barlow 8.04% 4th Audrey Roberts 7.34% 5th Sally Webster 7.23% 6th Gail McIntyre 7.06% 7th Hayley Cropper 6.99% 8th Kylie Platt 6.85% 9th Mary Taylor 6.76% 10th Norris Cole 6.49% 11th Steve McDonald 6.25% 12th David Platt 5.98% 13th Leanne Tilsley 5.83% 14th Rita Tanner 3.92% 15th Beth Tinker 3.90% Quite interesting as lots of the places in the actual top 10 differed! |

What I love about Roy is that he never suffers from personality transplant like some of them do. He is utterly believable to the point that when I see David Neilson on award shows smiling happily, it doesn't seem quite right. A very well deserved 1st place

59 (61) Jenna Kamara 4.47% (Round 1)
Ranking History: X-X-61-59 With a small rise from last year we have Jenna Kamara at 59! Most of Jenna’s stories this year have involved her status as lesbian, initilly coming out to her mum and then starting a relationship with Sophie Webster. She and Sophie had literally no chemistry and it was a very strange relationship, but it did all end abruptly leaving Jenna with nothing really to do now and no clear plan. It’s sad as I do actually think Jenna had potential, but I can’t see her avoiding the axe this year and I’m surprised she didn’t go at the same time as her mum. Although perhaps the fact that she wasn’t axed means they have big plans for her in this coming year? ![]() Quote:
46 (44) Katy Armstrong 7.35% (Round 1)
Ranking History: 57-34-44-46 In 46th place we have Katy Armstrong! 2014 has mostly seen Katy torn between Ryan and Chesney – as she embarked on an affair with Ryan which in turn ended her relationship with Chesney. Ryan has now left the show and Chesney appears to have happily moved on with Sinead, which leaves Katy with not much left to do apart from appear in the background of scenes involving the more prominent Windass characters and is occasionally seen talking to Steph or looking after Joseph. I think Katy’s main role at the moment is serving as eye candy to the male viewers – will she have a bigger role in the show in 2014? ![]() Quote:
45 (51) Simon Barlow 7.69% (Round 1)
Ranking History: 24-23-51-45 In 45th place we have another DS favourite, Simon Barlow! Simon has actually managed to rise slightly from last year after his disastrous drop to the bottom 15, which suggests the hate that people had for him last year may have died down a bit. As usual, we’ve probably seen more of him than the other children over the past years, as he’s played big roles in the relationships between Leanne and Nick, Carla and Peter and Peter and Tina. Most recently we’ve also seen him become a victim to the wrath of Faye and Grace in the bullying storyline. I do get where the disdain towards Simon is coming from, he can come across as highly irritating and precocious at times and similarly to Chesney, I don’t think the character is adapting too well to growing up now he is now longer the cute and funny boy that everybody loved. Having said that, I do think Alex Bain is a great actor for his age and there still definitely is a lot of love out there for Simon. Will Simon be able to reignite more of that love over the next year? Quote:
Next up...
44 (52) Craig Tinker 7.89% (Round 1) Ranking History: X-X-52-44 Craig manages a slight rise this year and gets to 44th! Finishing just one place above Simon, this also makes Craig the highest ranked child character! I really like the character of Craig and I think he’s developing nicely, he can be funny at times but the actor has also shown he isn't too bad at the more dramatic side of things as well. He doesn’t appear a whole lot so I wouldn’t really say he deserves a higher ranking than this, however he was a big part of the events that led up to the Karl reveal so we saw a bit more of him then. I really like the Beth/Kirk/Craig set up and looking forward to seeing more of it throughout the year! Quote:
32 (37) Dennis Tanner 9.22% (Round 1)
Ranking History: X-32-37-32 Dennis manages to get back to his debut position of 32, but does not manage to get back into the top 30! I’ve really liked having Dennis on the street, it gives a great link to the history of the show and he works well with the dynamic of the other older characters. I was therefore really upset to hear of his axing in the show, also quite perplexed as it seemed to come out of nowhere and I can’t really think of much good reason for it happening – there’s definitely quite a few characters that I would have axed before Dennis! Most recently we’ve seen Dennis get back involved with his rock management past and reacquaint himself with old friend Ritchie de Vries, as well as growing closer to Gloria, much to the dismay of wife Rita! Will Dennis’ involvement with Ritchie and Gloria mean bad news for his predicament on the street? ![]() Thanks for all the hard work Niall, always enjoy this thread - but please PM me a reminder next time as I missed most of the voting.

12 (5) David Platt 5.98% (Top 15)
Ranking History: 20-17-5-12 David drops down from his top 5 ranking last year, but still manages a respectable placing of 12th. I was actually really surprised with David’s ranking this year, considering that most of DS seemed to side with him during the Kylie/Nick storyline, I was expecting him to be a strong contender to win and I’m really surprised that he’s been beaten by Kylie and Gail, when most of DS sided against them! He is a polarising character, however, and had quite a few lower rankings so that probably explains his ranking. It’s been a very big year for David as the Platt’s took centre stage. It looked to be a happy year for David for the prospective birth of his daughter, however that was soon ruined after he found out about the one night stand between his brother Nick and wife Kylie! David started some kind of hate campaign towards Nick after finding out, which eventually led to Nick being placed in a critical condition and near to death! This caused further problems for David as his family turned against him when they found out, and he was banned from seeing Max and Lily by Kylie. Thankfully the storyline seems to have come to a close and David and Kylie are back together and living happily, but will they maintain that for the rest of the year? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Quote:
Meaning the top 5 consists of...

Very glad Carla didn't win, she's been horrible during the cancer storyline but then I've never liked her character. Glad Deirdre got 2nd, she's been brilliant this year. Bit annoyed with Mary and Norris coming in the top 10
Would've liked Leanne to be in the top 10, she's really improved this year and nobody can fault Jane Danson. Glad with Eva's placing too. Thank you Niall for doing this

So pleased that Roy won
he has been especially amazing this past year and has reduced me to tears on a couple of occasions too.Quite pleased with the top ten - all good strong Corrie characters. Thanks Naill for putting it all together I have really enjoyed it all and it has helped to reminded me that their are some great characters in Corrie

Wanted Deirdre to win, she brightens up any episode. Roy is great too though so no major complaints.
Those mentioning Leanne - The problem I have with her is Jane is such a good actress (probably the most natural on the show actually) but the character herself is horrible. |
