Powered/self powered external hdd for use with media player?
Performance wise which would be better, a 2.5" drive self powered with a spindle speed of 5400/7200 rpm or a 3.5" drive mains powered with a spindle speed of 7200rpm?
Content on the drive will be HD movies, 720/1080p. I've been looking a G-Technology, Western Digital and Seagate, any other recommendations.....TIA. |

A 5400 rpm drive is more than fast enough for HD playback. The recording drive in my pvr is 5400rpm and will record two HD streams at once and replay an existing HD recording without any difficulty. The lower speed drive will use less power and be quieter as well. I have 750GB usb2 usb powered drive, it will easily playback 1080p24 36Mbps content (full-Blu-ray quality)
The WD My Passport 2TB should do nicely then. .....in red to match the laptop.

I would suggest not considering Seagate, those are the drives that fail most in PVR's (the WD ones seem a LOT more reliable).
