I am running a number of polls to discover the favourite story for each Doctor. This one is for the First Doctor.

Please note this does include lost episodes as they still remain in audio.

This poll will be open for 7 days.

Hard to choose. It would probably be Marco Polo if it wasn't audio-only. As it is, I think I'd go for the Aztecs. Barbara was great in that one.

Am currently doing a rewatch from the beginning, loving it so far! Up to the Time Meddler so far, what a great story, a real game changer. The cliffhanger for ep 3 would have been a great wtf moment back in the day!

Got a real love for The War Machines so that's got my vote, but The Time Meddler and The Dalek Invasion of Earth aren't far behind.

Totally agree with this. That Cliffhanger is an awesome one for the Hartnell Era and I daresay very few people would have been expecting that at the time. I always regret knowing about The Monk before I watched this story for the first time on BBC2 in the 90's. It sort of was a bit of a spoiler really, it wasn't deliberate, never expected to ever watch it when I first knew about this story.

It's also a story where Hartnell wasn't much missed in the second episode as it was so good. I like the Psuedo-Historical aspect of it and that's what sets it aside from all the other Historicals and just beats The Dalek Masterplan as my fave Hartnell story.

I really couldn't pick a single favourite Hartnell serial so I'll just say my favourites are probably 'The Mythmakers' (some of the best scripts Doctor Who has ever had), 'Marco Polo' (the only real 'odyssey' story in the Doctor Who canon), 'The Dalek's Masterpan' (favourite Sci-Fi serial of the era), 'The Aztecs' (just so solid; good in every department) and 'The Romans' (for pure entertainment). Oh, and of course episodes 2 - 4 of 'An Unearhly Child' (watched the first episode too many times and gotten bored with it, but I still find the Tribe of Gum wonderful).

And, of course, some of us remember them from their first broadcast.

In the event, I voted for The Aztecs, but it could as easily have been any one of a dozen others. Nice to see The Keys of Marinus and The Time Meddler doing so well.

Same here, I Iove most of them but the Aztecs was pretty special.

It's got to be the Daleks, but it was hard to choose. I really love the Hartnell era, and Hartnell is one of my favorite Doctors.

I like Unearthly Child (as a stand alone episode), I wish it was entitled as such and the remaining three episodes remain separate (as a Tribe called Gum), because they were so different, & besides I find the remaining 3 boring.

Just watched "The Daleks" for the first time a few weeks ago -what a superb first episode -really up there with some of the best. I think the bulk of the first season's $'s must have been spent on this story.

The Dalek Invasion of Earth is okay, but I think maybe a little too highly regarded by some. Personally I prefer the movie version. Maybe I prefer it as I saw it first and it is really a copy, but with a bigger budget. I don't know.

I like the Aztecs, The Time Meddler & The War Machines too, these are good solid stories. There's a couple I'm yet to see (half way through "The Sensorites" & yet to watch "The Web Planet" or "The Tenth Planet", will get to those in the coming weeks).

But of the ones I've seen, my favourite is "The Ark". If you look beyond the look of the Monoids (which I thought was rather clever), the "Security Kitchen" & Dodo (a companion who tends to rank near the bottom of "favourite" companions rankings), it is a well paced, great story with a nice twist half way through.

I'm not really sure. I'm not that big a fan of the Hartnell era. It's between The Aztecs and The Dalek Invasion of Earth.
I think I'll vote for The Dalek Invasion of Earth.

Honourable mentions: The Time Meddler and The Romans.
I've also never watched The Dalek Masterplan reconstructions. I probably should one day.

I can see a few stories are going to be fighting for the top spot.

Love the era so this is tricky. The Ark came close, but voted for The Rescue because a)I love it, b) it's probably my favourite performance by Hartnell, and c) no-one else has voted for it yet.

Definately The Dalek Invasion of Earth. The Doctor saying goodbye to Susan at the end of episode 6 is so moving!

Gets me every time. A little tear begins to trickle down. [Sniff!]

Anyway, a good story all round. The scripts are well written, and what improves it a little is having CGI on the DVD release. Battersea Power Station done up with CGI is much better, plus the Dalek Ships look better too.

Maureen O'Brien is also excellent in it as Vicki.

That is a mystery but guess when you have only one vote to choose from out of so many stories, something's gotta lose out. I rate The Romans quite highly, it's a different sort of historical and Hartnell is just superb in it. I'd definitely have it in my Top Ten Hartnell Stories, if not the Top Five.

The Smugglers and The Savages are both excellent in soundtrack CD form, and totally overturn their reputations as being silly (Smugglers) or boring (Savages).

I have voted for The War Machines: the story where DW begins to turn intot he show we still see today. So many others could have got a vote from me, though: DIoE, Time Meddler, Aztecs, Marco Polo (only based on soundtrack obvs).

The 1st Dr is my current favourite Doctor.

OP just wondering are we going to get polls for 9,10 and 11? I think it would be silly not to, I can understand skipping 8, 12 and War but really the others should get a poll

I voted The Aztecs. Poor Barbara in a quandary and a silly hat.

Great story.

I always struggle with The Smugglers, even in telesnap form. I think it's because it's sandwiched between two great sci-fi stories that it loses it's effectiveness and though it's entertaining in places I don't think it's as strong as earlier historicals. You can maybe see why they were phased out not long after this.

The Savages, love that story and I agree it's far from boring.

Don't worry you will indeed be able to vote for 8, 9, 10 and 11. The War Doctor, The Meta-Crisis Doctor and 12 obviously will not get a poll.
