Rising Star could do to Call The Midwife what it did to Dancing On Ice. Could be stronger competition than some expect.

What a difference a few weeks makes, back then the obituary of ITV's Sunday nights was being written, people saying they would never have a big success at this time of year ever again as BBC1's line up of Call the Midwife and The Musketeers was just unstoppable and likely to be scheduled for many years to come.

Since then the Musketeers has dropped every week and even Call the Midwife is showing a slight sign of weakness. Shows that such bold predictions are foolish.

Although I guess her drama contoller will also have opinions on where to pitch drama, but Moore may want something different again next January as "Call The Midwife" gives a great lead in.”

BBC1 has a problem in that it just can't find a programme that can follow Call The Midwife and keep most of the audience. Ripper Street and now The Musketeers have failed to do this. ITV had a potent combination for years with Wild At Heart following Dancing On Ice.

All predictions are foolish these days as it seem all shows are at the mercy of the audiences who seem to change their minds very quickly.
Both sides need to be trying new things all the time while knowing 90% of them are probably not going to make it.

In truth its not really that much of a problem to have 6m shows at 9pm on Sundays following CTM. Sure they would like another 10m show to follow it but there are not many examples of 2 shows working like that at all. You have pointed out one such but in recent years both channels have struggled with shows following their big hitters.

And yet BBC1 can't find those 6m 9pm shows to follow Midwife. They should have 6m overnights at least not 6m in consolidated ratings. That's not good enough. ITV used to manage it regularly when Heartbeat was flying like Cold Feet.

And therapeutic as well for someone so wildly biased to ITV, given how dominant BBC1 is in the drama chart (even if we ignore The Musketeers whose place in the chart is skewed by their heavily-hyped premiere).

Oh dear. Mr Selfridge is even trailing tired old Casualty.

Wasn't New Tricks getting over 7 million on its first showing at 9 pm ?I believe Hustle was as well. Not to mention Life on Mars.

ITV had it with Wild At Heart and Dancing On Ice all the way up to January 2012 when Call The Midwife came along. BBC1 hasn't had a show to follow CTM and keep its audience since CTM started.

Well Channel 4 v Channel 5 right now!

It might be discussion about relevant issues in todays society.

But we really know its a good old shouting match

Channel 5 to win hands down imo.

Although I suppose their programme has the word "row" in it.

Katie Hopkins is Channel 5's centre forward. No beating her

Yes but they're not on after Midwife, that's BBC1's problem. They don't have a show to put on after Midwife at 9pm that keeps most of the audience. The Musketeers and Ripper Street didn't work there.

Channel 5 night have screwed themselves by making their debate so long and starting at 8pm.

So far Channel 4s Benefits Debate is far better then 5s Benefits Row

Plus it's far more chaotic than the last one.

Anyone who criticised Wrighty last time got it wrong big time. Ferrari and Diamond are struggling I'm afraid.

So i'm hearing channel 5s row is a total shambles. They should pay attention to 4...this is what you call an actual debate
