The Big Allotment Challenge begins with 2.5 million on BBC Two

The Big Allotment Challenge began with over 2 million viewers on Tuesday, according to overnight ratings.

BBC Two's latest competition was seen by 2.5m (11.8%) at 8pm, down 200,000 from last week's The Great British Sewing Bee finale in the same slot.

The channel's Great British Menu cooked up 1.8m (9.1%) at 7.30pm, while new documentary series Watermen: A Dirty Business interested 2.2m (10.2%) at 9pm. Jools Holland's Later... Live returned with 805k (4.7%) at 10pm.

On BBC One, Shetland ended its current series with 4.1m (19.3%) at 9pm. Have I Got a Bit More News For You amused 2.1m (17.6%) at 10.35pm.

ITV's River Monsters appealed to 1.8m (9.3%) at 7.30pm (157k/0.7% on +1). A repeat of Midsomer Murders gathered 2.1m (10.2%) at 8pm (261k/1.4%).

On Channel 4, Embarrassing Bodies returned with 1.3m (6.1%) at 8pm (242k/1.1%). New Worlds climbed slightly to 488k (2.4%) at 9pm, while a Dogging Tales repeat intrigued 491k (3.6%) at 10pm (130k/1.8%).

Channel 5's Nightmare Neighbour Next Door appealed to 1.5m (7.3%) at 8pm (191k/0.9%), followed by The Mentalist with 934k (4.3%) at 9pm (152k/1.0%). Law & Order: SVU thrilled 665k (4.2%) at 10pm.

On BBC Three, The Call Centre rose by around 400k to 1.2m (5.4%) at 9pm, followed by Sweat the Small Stuff with 439k (2.5%) at 10pm. Family Guy tickled 896k (11.1%) at 11pm.

The BBC has renewed hit drama Shetland for a third series. The crime based drama won its slot every week that it didnt face sporting event-tv competition.

Good news for ITV then!

Quite a breath of fresh air coming from "The Big Allotment Challenge" it seems to encompass every reality genre that's popular. Gardening and Jam Making how could this really fail. And nice to see Fern ( appropriately named) get a hit show away from "This Morning" and her Channel 4 chat show. I expect this little golden carrot to be a grower in weeks to come rather than become a pile of manure.

An error by DS there: it actually "tickled" that many at 23:25. Both eps were way up on Monday's performances.

"EastEnders" doing ok in terms of share last night, the latest story around murder will give it a bit of a boost next week and it continues to dominate I player player. 2014 being a really successful year in its placing on the most watched I player programmes.

Indeed. ITV should be worried. I know it's Easter, but even so, after the Killer Cameron bounce of last year, that's not a good place to be. Emmerdale's only saving grace is that its ratings don't really make headlines … unless they sink much lower, that is.

Only 3.5m (20%) according to ITV Media. TV audience seems to be vanishing at that time of the evening!

There's nothing wrong with viewer loyalty and familiarity, and ITV used to have loads of it until they decided to wind all their viewers up. Ridiculous to complain ITV are disadvantaged in any way, they just need to make better programmes. It's totally disrepectful to assume that programmes like Countryfile succeed because viewers are in a totally catatonic state and will watch any old rubbish that's served up. Review the programmes, not the audience.

This seems the optimum time to mention that Victor Lewis-Smith once said a friend of his once spent time in a mental hospital and the telly had ITV on all day because it was the only channel suitably unchallenging enough.

Stinker of a night for Channel Four, there, New Worlds is an absolute disaster and they were trailing that loads. This is a dreadful schedule which is too populist without even being very popular.

Rant over. Sorry guys if I bring the thread to a meltdown.”

Totally agree. I have challenged one or two about it before as well. I have elderly relatives who never watch CF or AR by the way.

EE almost the same figure as last week but with a bigger share so having to work harder for the same number but ED down 500k - that is simply awful which ever way you look at it.

Maybe, they are not happy with what is on offer.

So Shetland has been commissioned for a 3rd series. It ended on a low last night, and I suspect were it to move out of the Tuesday slot when ITV actually turns up, it would drop below 4million. Its been given a cushy slot and dropped below Holby City ratings, it is really worth another commission? It will surely be in a Tuesday slot next year.

Some programmes have tremendous viewer loyalty.

When the get competition they'll dip slightly but still do well. It's funny how some say programmes do well due to people leaving the TV on and nodding off. That is not always the case at all.

On paper it's a line-up you think would rate better. Nobody expected New Worlds to tank.

I think it depends what your looking for. Not every drama can be 7m+ you need some capable of 5-5.5m and Shetland does just that. Its average this year is better than L&O last/this year average as well. I agree though its one of those that could go either way in commissioning terms.

Emmerdale had a nightmare night. It's not the timeslot as Corrie has been moved to 7pm some nights and done well. And yet the papers say nothing about Emmerdale's ratings.

No, if there was something interesting on, people would watch. Are both shows down significantly from this time last year?

April was fairly chilly this time last year so I doubt last years figures are that reliable in the great scheme of things.

Ratings for Emmerdale are about 1m viewers down on this time last year (both this actual time and comparing Easter weeks), The One Show proportionately similar drop.

But equally the audience share for The One Show is either holding steady or up slightly at 20% year-on-year. I think Emmerdale has actually dropped about 3% though (was 33-36% last year at times).

Basically the live TV audience just isn't there in the same numbers at the moment. Emmerdale has lost share as well as viewers, The One Show has lost viewers but maintained share...

Daily Mirror reporting top BBC stars wages to be scrutinised. They say Brucie was on £500k and the favourite to replace him Claudia will get half of that. They say Paxman/Lineker/Norton/Evans/Will.I.Am/Fiona Bruce are all thought to be over £500k as well. Sounds an awful lot for some of the names on that list.

I'd be happy with 250k a year, whilst working on a TV show watched by millions. TV exposure whilst being paid for it
