The Voice and Splash both rating pretty much exactly how i predicted last night. Splash benefitted from the football lead-in and the fact its last 20mins didnt face the Voice. The Voice was hurt by the lower-than-recent-rugby lead-in. Next week is a big night for the Voice, will be interesting to see how it holds up against bookies favourite Saturday Night Takeaway. BBC1 will be hoping it hits that 6m target of theirs, while Itv will be hoping for around 7m for SNT [the level it was at last year].

It shows how impressive Strictly/I'm A Celebrity/Britain's Got Talent and X Factor are to deliver big audiences after so many years.

BBC1 have lots of second tier, solid entertainment but they need another Strictly sized blockbuster.

Samuel, where exactly has this so called "6 million target" you speak of been published? I'd love to know.

UK TV Ratings ‏@TVRatingsUK 1m
ITV's coverage of Man City v Chelsea in the #FACup peaked with 6.01m/31.2%. The full programme averaged 4.57m/23.8% from 4.45pm.

Reflex was flattened by the two sporting attractions.

Not completely impossible. I think some broadcasters have been guilty of using the audience is fragmenting as an excuse. Then Downton Abbey turned up, Wallace & Gromit got 16m at Christmas, Mrs Brown's Boys became a ratings beast, Sherlock grew into a blockbuster. The audience can be enticed back once the shows are there.

That's a weak rating for the FA Cup though, considering two of Britain's current best teams were involved. Had it been on BBC One, it'd have got 5m+ I'm sure of it. Those long 30min buildups Itv do are very unpopular and drag down their averages. Cant wait for the FA Cup to return to the Beeb.

I agree with Samuel though, a peak of 6 million is good but not brilliant. Not great for next year either if such a big pairing cannot do a bit better. We will see if the BBC can make a bigger noise of the competition or not.

6 million would not be good for the last audition. It would need to hold up better than that before the battles. The rugby will help, I think and it should be a more exciting show as they all choose their final team members. Last nights show was a little bit flat.

Exactly. Itv had a 13pct all day share yesterday, which was boosted by football. From next January onwards, many of their Saturday shares will be sub 10% like last week's 8%! So yet more bad news for the broadcaster who are struggling to hold on to their share.

I think I'm right in thinking though that Chelsea and Man City, despite their success, are much less of a ratings draw than Man U and Liverpool.

Itv commission Cilla. Drama about the younger years of Cilla Black.
With fliming starting next month an Autumn airing seems likely.

Absolutely right. City are only the fifth most supported team in England at best, if and when Forest and Leeds eventually end up back in the big time they'll probably be only seventh most popular.

This is yet another example of cost-cutting in drama at the broadcaster. Instead of a big 6 or 8 episode new drama, they've resorted more and more this year to these small 2 or 3 part shows. Cant see this show getting a good audience. Also if rumours are to be believed, Cilla Black is one nasty lady in real life. I wonder if this drama will portray that?

Yes, a 4th day of blue skies here too, still not clearing this bloody snow though,

Re - The Voice, it does seem to be dragging now and the loooooong runtime doesn't do it too many favours. I PVR and run through it in a similar way to the XF.

I'm surprised no-one (Samuel) played the Half Term Holidays card!

He will never answer this direct question as he has no answer.

The best you MAY get is one of his informers (who will remain unnamed) has told him.

I personally cannot believe the BBC would be happy with a 2.5m drop across 2 episodes.

I'm surprised next week's episode of The Voice is 90 minutes long. I think they should've kept it to 60 minutes. Then people would be more inclined to watch live with Saturday Night Takeaway on +1 or catch up.

They also have a Tommy Cooper drama this year.

Last year the Voice averaged 6-7million up against Saturday Night Takeaway for its blind auditions. That is roughly what the BBC will be expecting for next week, and then towards the lower end of that range once the blind auditions are over.

Nice to see ITV adding more non-crime drama to their slate.

Looks like the sort of biographical drama BBC4 has been producing lately.
SamuelW

Makes little sense airing a BBC4-esque biopic drama on a mainstream channel like Itv [or BBC1] though. It's not going to get very good ratings. Also it probably wont sell well abroad, who internationally even knows who Cilla Black is. I hope it's not a propaganda piece and they actually show what Black really is like.

So the BBC are not hoping to improve on last year then? That cannot be a good strategy.

With SCD they did everything in their power to improve ratings year on year and it worked. By refreshing the judging panel this year with the addition of Kylie, I cannot believe the BBC are not hoping for better overall ratings?
