Would Doctor Who Be As Popular If From The Start The Lead Role Was A Woman

Just Wondering and not to be sexist, would Doctor Who be as popular and still be going this day if the Doctor was always portrayed by Woman?

Doctor Who Titles; An Unearthly Child

Dr. Who Judi Dench
Ian William Hartnell
Barbara Jacqueline Hill
Sid (The Doctor's Grandson) Bernard Cribbins

Does it have the same ring to it?

You did so well for at least 36 hours.

Geez.

If Bernard Cribbins is in it...it's a hit. A palpable one.

I doubt the show was Timey wimey enough in 1963 to cast a 29 year old as the Doctor and a 35 year old as her Grandson.

I doubt the power's that be would have cast a woman in a main heroic role at all in 1963

I started watching when Joanna Lumley regenerated into Nerys Hughes in Logopolis. I wasn't so keen on Kate O'Mara after that but the last few seasons with Felicity Kendall were cool, especially the ones with Craig Charles as Ace.

Still can't beat the Three Doctors with Joan Hickson, Joan Simms and Honor Blackman

EDIT: I didn't like that line about her being half-human in the 1996 TV movie with Catherine Zeta-Jones though.

BBC Wales made some good casting decisions though - pity Tilda Swinton only did one series, but Kathy Burke was a surprisingly good replacement, cockney accent an' all. Wasn't too sure about Hayley Atwell at first, thought she was too young for the part, but she played it nice and quirky. However, I'm so looking forward to seeing what feisty Scot Clare Grogan can do with the role, and I'm glad that Ben Wishaw is staying as Clarence.
