Best exit

Which doctors, assistants or anybody you can think of had the best exit. My two favourites are Rose and Donna both very emotional. First exits for both of them.

Doctors: Can't really choose between 5 and 11.

Companions: the brilliant scene with Susan in TDIOE set the template pretty high and there have been so many effective ones since, but as she's my favourite companion, I would have to go with Donna. Really hit me and it was brilliantly acted. (What do you mean, she came back? I deny this reality. )

Adric! Both for the actual circumstances and his portrayal in the story, and for the more sarcastic reasons.

Best exits?

Well...I've had a think, and here are my favourite:

Doctors: Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor in Planet of the Spiders

Companions: Tegan's goodbye in Ressurection of the Daleks

I think Leela comes a close second, Lalla's Romana at the end of Warriors Gate third, Rose in Doomsday and Donna in Journey's End to make up my five.

Romana.
I liked her defiance of The Doctor's order to get into the Tardis, demonstrating the same sort of stubborn independence she had witnessed in The Doctor.
The thought of her being a female 'Doctor' travelling with K9 around E-Space doing good, it was incredibly satisfying.

It was done in a subtle but abrupt way, leaving you with an odd empty feeling that was a perfect ending to the story and The E-Space trilogy.

As far as exits go by the dr eccleston, pertwee & davison have been the standouts, while all the rest have been poor to average at best.

Always though Susan's was the best in the Classic Series. As it was the first it had more impact. Don't think many of the other companion exits were that great but Sarah and Tegan's were good.

I'm torn between Logopolis and Caves Of Androzani for best exit.
Logopolis is one of my favourite ever stories as it was the point at which I started as a young kid and Peter was "my" Doctor(although I'd say he shares that honour with Sylv) but despite this, I was really looking forward to seeing a regeneration again by the end of Season 21 and the one we got was fantastic.

As for companion departures, it would have to be Susan

Doctors: Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker (T), Davison, Eccleston, Tennant

Companions: Susan, Ian & Barbara, Zoe & Jamie, Jo, SJS (bit rushed, though), Romana (again, bit rushed), Adric and Tegan.

I think it probably has to be Zoe's, after being mind-wiped by the Time Lords:

"I thought I'd forgotten something important ... but it's nothing."

Makes me cry every time.

Tom Bakers Doctor. Very heroic not like some of the others slow poisoning etc etc. dragging it on and on. Tegan's departure in Classic who and Martha's in new who. That was a surprise for me and sad but I liked the fact that she made the decision of enough was enough.

Eleven, Two and Five, each had very good exits when they regenerated. They're actually my top three (in that order). Eleven's speech about accepting change, but not forgetting the old, Two not going out without a fight when being judged by the Time Lords, and Five giving up his life just to save Peri in such a hopeless situation. Those were good exits for a Doctor.

For companions, that's a bit harder since they're so many of them, though I'd have to say Lucie Miller's final exit was the best. Seriously, she crashes a nuke into the Dalek's time engine, and blows them all up! The effect it has on the Doctor is just heart-wrenching, and him listening to her recording at the very end of that story...

There were some other good ones I liked. Jamie and Zoe, because of how cruel and sad it is and how it pushes Two for his final moments, Tegan, because things just became too violent and stopped being fun, and Martha, because she was able to move on with her life because Ten wouldn't.

Probably not my favourite, but I thought someone should mention Jo Grant's exit. Nicely underplayed emotionality from Pertwee.

Jo Grant's exit was my favourite companion exit. Her time in the show had a real arc and her departure was so satisfying and, as a previous poster said, beautifully underplayed by Pertwee.

Best Doctor exits for me have to be One, Three, Five and Ten. I thought Ten's reluctance to go made a refreshing change. I cannot state how much I loathed Eleven's exit. After the glorious 50th ep, Matt Smith deserved far better than the tripe he was asked to play at Christmas.
