chromebooks are produced to use google services.

Linux, you are more free, you don't have to be online and you got a lot more software to choose from. which one you go for depends on what you want to do.”

I am pretty much committed to Google - Mail / Business Apps, Calendar, Docs, Sheet, Keep.

Working with Linux Mint 16 XFCE, which is great, is there a way to uninstall unwanted programs e.g. Firefox so as to speed up my netbook? I can't find the equivalent of the Windows "Uninstall a program". I'll keep googling for it but it would be great if somebody knows.

You can uninstall that through the Software Manager, but it won't speed up your netbook one iota.
Just search for it and it'll show the option to remove.

Where are you seeing a lack of speed?
Booting up or just a general sluggishness?

I am just being greedy. I imagined the boot-up for be about 5 secs like in a tablet. It is much longer. But fine.

As emptybox said, use the software manager to uninstall. A netbook is not going to be speedy anyway, if you want a bit more speed, them maybe something like puppy Linux would be better.

Linux Mint XFCE will be fine on a netbook. Use the synaptic package manager found on it to remove unwanted software.
An excellent alternative distro would be LXLE.

I went and installed LXLE based on a few suggestions here.

Very impressed with it. XFXE has a bit of a geeky hairshirt feel to it. LXLE seems to have a better look and feel for me.

LXLE though has to be downloaded with Torrent which I had not used before this.

Yup. Trying new things thanks to the help of all of you.

The LXLE wallpaper / desktop images are just superb. All of them.

Indeed, henrywilliams58. The LXLE distribution of Linux (see http://lxle.net/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99zomqqk1tM https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=li...w=1280&bih=857) is now nicely running on my laptop too. It's one of those Linux variants where the learning curve won't be too steep for former Windows users.

I found that some Linux distributions had difficulties with the Broadcom wifi card in my laptop (a widely reported issue) but LXLE recognised it straight away so it got the job! I also agree that the wallpapers are visually stunning.

I'm now part way through trying out various Linux versions for the main PC which is easy to do via the live DVD/CD method.

PS I'd suggest trying Pale Moon for Linux as your browser: http://www.palemoon.org/contributed-builds.shtml
