O2 & Voda - 2017 for 4G
Sadly, O2 and Vodafone have now out their target for 98% of the population to receive 4g back from 2015 to 2017!!!
It's on both websites http://status.o2.co.uk Anyone know why this is? O2 was promoting 4G coverage by the end of 2015

Haha, called it. There was no way O2 (or even Voda) would hit it by the end of 2015. But a 1-2 year delay. That's just bad.... If this info is correct that is. Never did expect them to hit it by the end of 2015 though. Nor do I expect EE to hit 98% by the end of this year, but I don't expect them to be as far off as O2/Voda will be. Do you have a source for Vodafone? As a press release released today by Vodafone said- Quote:
Vodafone is targeting indoor 4G coverage across 98% of the UK population by 2015
A 2 year 4G roll out plan was way too ambitious from Voda and O2. They're not Three/EE.

They probably decided 2G was all people really need anyway
![]() The end of 2017 will be their fall back target. Will see if they do any other official announcements. |

Also see Vodafone's press release from today http://www.vodafone.co.uk/cs/groups/...ftst048661.pdf FWIW I think they will miss the end of 2015 as it seems too tight to me given where they are. Don't think it makes much difference though if it happens sometime in 2016. Still quite impressive. Incidentally I also think EE will miss their 98% outdoor by end of this year claim. |

Makes sense.
EE and 3 have had years of strong innovation and investment via MBNL to work from, so they can presumably do it more quickly. VF/O2 are in the stone age so it will take longer to get into the 21st century. |

Makes sense: their 3G roll-out is a joke.

I wonder if the member that posted daily about Three's delay will post to let out his frustrations at the push back, after all this will delay a lot of O2 customers getting 4G as planned.

Both companies still working to 2015.
That's not a communication to say rollout has slipped. |

I sincerely hope it is by the end of 2015 rather than 2017.
Where I work in Derbyshire I can only get GPRS and in select parts of Derby city centre it isn't much better. |

Their cannot even do 3G in my area so I have no expectation that they will suddenly mend their ways and go straight to 4G by the end of 2015. 2017 would seem much more likely given their starting point!

Oxfordshire is the same! Large areas of GRPS and pockets of 3G!

i'd like to nominate this for the most factually inaccurate thread title in this forum.

I think it’s just a misunderstanding on o2 and Vodafone part as I think they meant to say their 3G networks will cover 98% by 2015.

Bizarrely Vodafone have 4G in Grantham in Lincolnshire yet not in Lincoln. EE are yet to cover Grantham or Lincoln properly. O2's 4G checker is terrible so I can't see if they are following Vodafone's lead.
It looks like they'll get up to say 90% fairly swiftly (mid 2015) but reaching the higher target may take til 2017. |

I never saw it likely that O2/Vodafone would manage 98% indoor by end of 2015 I think we will see around 90-95% indoor of them.

It was only a couple days ago O2 stated they were a few months ahead of schedule. 2017 has always been the official deadline, but both still work towards 2015.

VF/O2 are in the stone age so it will take longer to get into the 21st century. In Edinburgh, O2 and VF launched 4G just over a year after EE did. Comparing the two, a year apart then, O2/VF had 50% more 4G masts in the city than EE did and ten times as many outside the city. Given where they are today is well ahead of where EE were a year ago, I don't see the problem. |

As with everything else, it varies by area.

You said yourself you didn't think EE had anywhere near 50 on launch day (30 Oct 2012). O2/VF had at least 74 at launch (19 Nov 2013)
