I'm having Infinity 1 installed tomorrow 21st Feb.
Years ago, in the days of dial-up I had a second line installed for the Internet to save disconnection when the phone was being used.
The engineer came and installed a new line and master socket upstairs in the room the computer was. So I had two master sockets, one for each line.

When ADSL come out I enquired about getting it installed on the original line but was told it was not possible but I could have it on the second line, so that is what I did.
Anyway, years later I had the original line disconnected and kept the ADSL line with the master socket upstairs.

So, the original master socket is still there (dead) in the hall. What I want to know is will the engineer re-wire the old master socket in the hall, as the ADSL line wire runs past it, or will he just use the master socked upstairs?

Normally I guess they will keep the master where it currently is. If that's currently upstairs then that is where it will usually stay. They can be asked to run a 'data extension' up to 30M (from memory) if you prefer to site your router somewhere else.

If you want them to use the defunct downstairs socket there's no harm in asking the engineer. It may be dead easy if the wires for the correct phone line are there anyway. It might even be better if that is where the lines enter the property. But you have to bear in mind extensions and other phone sockets around the house (if any) - they may stop working if the master is moved. Do you have any power points in the vicinity of the downstairs socket? You'll need one if you want your router there.

Glad you reminded me about the extensions. I'll stick with it where it is now, up stairs next to a power point and where the phone extensions come from..

All this should be getting rapidly obsolete as the BT Infinity website says that "Infinity 1" is now self-install! Then there will be no new master socket and customers will, presumably, use micro-filters (as with ADSL).

Having said that I also have Infinity 1 booked for 4th March and this is also being engineer installed! If he wants to install a filtered faceplate I will want him to change the master socket to what is currently extension #2 - as that is where the power and computers are!

The appointment was for between 1pm an 6pm.
Around 12:50 my AOL connection when off, just after 1pm the openreach engineer turned up, before 1:30 all done...

Did he install a new filtered master socket?

I have decided that (when my engineer visits me next Tuesday) that I will want him to do nothing at all! All my sockets are already fitted with micro filters for ADSL and, as I had been expecting to do for the predicted self-install, I want to continue using these. There is no prospect of siting the BT Router near the existing master socket.

He fitted a filtered master socket, took about 2 mins. You won't need ADSL filters on any extension with this.
The engineer can fit an Ethernet cable up to 30m if you don't have power near the master socket..

No that won't work for me! The master socket is right next to my front door and is over 30metres - via a tortuous route - to "middle upstairs bedroom" which is where it needs to go. There is a phone extension socket there which gives close to maximum predicted ADSL rate.

When I ordered the BT Website promised me self-install and just continuing to use the micro-filters is what I really want to do. Redesignating which socket is the master one is the other option.

If he works for Openreach and is not a contractor, he won't be allowed to use your micro filters. He has to fit a faceplate.

Contractors do what the hell they like and will gladly use your micro filters!

I had fibre installed a few weeks ago from Plusnet who are simply resellers of the BT product. I did not get a master socket at all, let alone a filtered one (I have always just had one that looks like an extension socket) and it still needs a filter. He said that's the new way now. I was quite disappointed really, but on the other hand, filters do die and at least this way I won't have to call out an engineer to fix it.

But did an OpenReach engineer come to your house to plug it all in?

The BT Infinity web-site says my install next week should need no engineer to visit. Their online - totally automated - booking system seems to need a reprogram to match this new fact as it booked me a visit anyway!

Just had Infinity 2 connected, nice guy, put a new faceplate on and checked everything - separate phone and internet sockets. Wow! Over 7 Megabyte/sec downloads. Very happy.

Sky cut me off last Saturday, fuming at having to go six days without the net, not sure if it's technical thing, Sky being petty for switching or BT being sloppy - should not have to go without the net for that long in this day and age.

As I said in another thread my Sky broadband and phone are going perfectly ahead of a changeover next Tuesday. They (Sky) even wrote me a letter confirming the changeover date!!!

For Infinity 2 (the 40Mb one) you should not have needed an engineer visit according to the BT website!

I'm on 76 M/Bit, just checked it is Infinity 2. Trying to remember whether the free Sainsbury's voucher was £100, sure it was when I ordered. Down to £50 now, hope they don't stiff me on that.
