Amazon takes on Netflix with rebrand of LoveFilm video-on-demand service

I am a By Post only customer, rural and low speed broadband for me, so never gonna get HD quality on my broadband for the next decade.

This new UI is poor for use as Lovefilm, I have to keep changing the search option to Lovefilm By Post when looking/searching for a particular film or artist I want to see. The search option keeps jumping back to DVD&Bluray or some other option.

The selection from what I have seen is exactly the same with some added extra titles. Some of the titles you were looking for might have just expired the licencing agreement.

I actually like the UI on the iPad, it blends very well with the IMBD site. It seems straight forward enough select either Film or TV the have a look or use the search feature, anything I like I can add to a watch list.

Just had a play around.
UI is nice, selection is still hit and miss. Sound and picture quality still not as good as Netflix.

Also, as a joint Prime member (the missus is the main account holder) I couldn't access free vids on my log-in - had to log-in as her. I think a few bods expected family members sharing Prime accounts would be able to access free vids but that doesn't seem to be the case...

Just managed to cancel the streaming service.
Lovefilm by Post is still showing as £4, sure it'll update soon.

I just checked it out. Looks ok, but a bit all over the place. Haven't tried watching anything yet but after my Lovefilm by post sub ends in April, I doubt I will be renewing

It looks awful.
My rental list appears to be in no particular order.
Not impressed.
Too complicated and confusing.
Why weren't we given any warning?
Netflix???

I only use the DVD option, I have quite slow BB and Amazon is the worst for buffering compared to other services I have tried”

I too have noted the lack of ratings. Also the rented list only shows the last 60. I have also downloaded the new version of the iPad Rentals App and this too has these missing features.

Surely that's for users who want to rent a-la-carte: Video On Demand (VOD) as opposed to Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD).

Watching via the LGTV app, the film I'm watching keeps shutting down, apart from that overall impressed with the quality, much better than what I had from Lovefilm.

I'll make use of the service, until October and then decide if I'm going to renew my Prime sub.

Already have Netflix, with all the regions, Hulu, HBO Amazon VOD (US) anyway, so don't really need another streaming service.
It might still be worth it, if I'm going to make use of the free delivery though.

I should have done it a while back to be honest, but i just cancelled my DVd/bluray rental, at least amazon made it easier, it seems like they want people to cancel it.

I noticed on there that it says about buying films, who on earth want to buy films which is not on physical media? I know I buy books for my Kobo, but at least I can move them to different devices. The same with MP3, not that I buy them that often, but at least I can stick them onto a CD, I bet you can't transfer the films you buy from Amazon onto DVD.

Not sure why people are finding it so hard tbh. There's a few niggles and changes that are worse but its really not that hard to use. A link to your rental list is in the drop down under your name and when on there its easy to get to the list of discs to search through. It actually has more filtering options (although I do miss the time period splits on coming soon as it made easy to see when new titles had been added as you just had to check the 'In two months' section every week for new titles)

The lack of order on the rental list apart is a little annoying bit atleast it keeps the priority split right.

I would advise just emailing them for each niggle that you find, if they get enough they will almost certainly make changes to implemented aspects that Lovefilms site did better

Thanks for pointing out Cinema Paradiso, I've had a quick look and signed up already. I should have shopped around years ago really but Lovefilm was working for me so I had no real impetus. That's all changed now though.

In just half an hour I've found loads of films on there that I have never been able to get from LF. It's a bit more expensive but a much, much better experience than the botch job that is new LoveFilm.

I think I'll run them side by side for a few weeks to see what the shipping and turnaround is like but it's looking as if I'll be cancelling LF shortly.

No problem. They really should advertise their service more because very few people have heard of them. They do say they specialize in world cinema but they seem to have the same stock range as Lovefilm and stock the big Hollywood films as well.

Things are worse for me now because at least the app was actually still working on my TV this morning. Now when I try to stream anything it will make the TV exit the smart hub. Good job I have my PC connected to my TV because I have had to watch via the website. Even that is not trouble free as some titles are playing with no sound.

Personally I prefer the world cinema stuff to the blockbusters anyway and I've already found plenty of world and older films that Lovefilm never had.

The only thing I'll have to get used to is the numbered ordering system. With around 900 films on my list I quite liked LF picking one out at random for me. The thought of having to put all of those in some sort of an exact order is a bit daunting. I may even keep both going and have LF send me out two random films from my huge archive and then have CP for the specific films I want to watch at that moment.

I've been maintaining a long-defunct 4 discs at a time option on LF for a few years now because as soon as I change it I can't get it back. I think 2 discs from each company should work out around the same(ish) as I was paying before.

That's what annoyed me for the 2 months I switched from Lovefilm to Blockbuster. Yes it was great that they sent me the title I put at the top when there was something new I really wanted to see but trying to order it was a pain and tbh there was really very little point having much more than 5 items on it at a time as nothing lower down ever had a chance of being sent.

Its nice opening the email (or the envelope as. I often ignore the 'discs on way' email) and having a surprise at what has been sent. And there's been some movies I had on my list that if I was ordering the list wouldn't have been sent as they weren't things I considered must see but rather something that had been recommended or just seemed interesting that I've really enjoyed

"Season".

They've gone through and replaced every mention of 'Series' with 'Season'. Looking at it on my 2013 Sony Bravia, now incredibly slow loading with time-outs a-plenty.

When will the creeping American-isation of our country end?! It's 'Series'!! 'Series', you dumb f*cks! Get out of my country and take your virtual wholesale takeover of commerce by massively under-cutting independents and small businesses with enormous city-size warehouses, with cheap labour picking and packing, working to almost surreal strictly-enforced timing schedules with you... you f*cking evil bastards!

Yes.
When I cancelled streaming it stated Lovefilm by Post membership would be unaffected.

Personally, I think using the term season is better.

You have a series comprised of several seasons. The series finale is the end.

In the UK a series finale means nothing; is it the final show, or will there be more? Who knows?

At the moment that and the multiple lists option are the only things making me think about keeping my LF account going.

I've got about a hundred films in the house that I haven't got around to watching yet and it's always a nightmare trying to pick which one to watch so the option of having someone else say "here, you're watching this one" and charging me for it (so I can't override the decision) is great.

I've got the 1975 version of of 'Farewell, My Lovely' with Robert Mitchum coming tomorrow. I've owned the 1944 Dick Powell version for years but I only got around to watching it a few weeks ago so god knows when I would have got around to putting this one at the top of my list. Looking forward to it now.

Because this is Britain and not America. We use Series in our culture. And the fact that someone actually went through and changed it, to me says it all, the arrogance of this company. I object to this creeping smug Americanisation that Amazon brings, that it can do whatever it wants. They can do business here, but they should respect local culture and norms and localise as much of their web content as possible.

OK......how the frack do you change the rental plan for Lovefilm by Post? Or is there now just 1 plan?

Just checked and apparently my unlimited 3 discs at home will be £7.28 from next charge? That would mean that cancelling the online streaming would knock off the £5.99 that I currently extra (£13.27 total per month currently). If that's the case I might consider just cancelling streaming and continuing with the by post service
