The rumour mill has been rumbling about this one for a while, but word is that Sony's Virtual Reality headset is finally ready to be shown to the public and will be revealed at the forthcoming GDC event in March.

Do people think this could be a device that truly defines PS4 as a must have system?

What price would you be willing to pay for such a device?

Or is it just a gimmick that simply won't catch on?

Yes and approx £100-£150 (At a push the higher end) Would have to have 3D and a good sound system (Which i suspect it would) I reckon it would be brilliant. Having use a demo unit of something similar i think it could definitely be a game changer. Will most definitely be a gimmick but hopefully a lot of games will be compatible.

I think even a £150 price tag is ambitious for a device featuring a pair of good quality screens. That said, apparently they are utilising the PS4 camera / PS Move / DS4 lightbar technology for head tracking, which should reduce the need for expensive sensors inside the unit.

Yep, £150 would be cheap but anything dearer would put a lot of people off buying. No doubt they'll come out at the £300 price mark and then reduce over a few years to eventually the £100-£150 price mark.

Suppose if they are utilizing move technology as you say will certainly reduce the price of it, though will add to the expense having to buy a camera.

I honestly don't think it catch on unless its dirt cheap, how many people are going to want to sit there with something on their heads when they game, most people are against jumping up and down with a remote and having a camera as part of the system, but this third peripheral will surely work

There is only one scenario in which i can see this working, if you are alone and nobody else is around, think about it if you invite friends around for a gaming session are people really going to wait for their turn on a headset or would they rather just play on a TV

Like i said if its dirt cheap i'd get one but would it get that much use for the average gamer between hanging out with friends/family and going to work

I can see it having a niche market appeal. I think enough people could be interested to make the product viable, but I doubt it will ever have mass market appeal over the course of the PS4s life cycle.

It could well be like MOVE on PS3 which found a good fanbase amongst some FPS fans, large enough that quite a few developers added support for MOVE into their games. But it never really had mass appeal.

GDC organisers have announced a new Sony session called “Driving the Future of Innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment,” which will hosted by PS Move creator and R&D director Richard Marks, senior software engineer Anton Mikhailov. and SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida.

If the VR headset really is coming, I guess this will be the time to show it off.

The Avegant Glyph looks like an interesting device as it's a lot smaller and lighter than the others due to not using screens.

Sounds like you've got your 'average gamers' mixed up a little.

For your 'average' lone gamer, the idea of an immersive headset is a GREAT IDEA. Especially if it fills your peripheral vision.

We're not talking social Wii gaming here.

2 things that worry me about this:

1: Can the PS4 achieve the kind of performance Valve and Oculus Rift believe is necessary for the best VR experience?

2) Software support. If it's going to be gimmicky shit, the hardware will fall flat. VR already has numerous games that support it on PC so the groundwork is already there before full product release of Oculus Rift, does the PS4 have the same?

1. An unnamed insider has claimed that "Sony's VR headset is as impressive as Valve's" - that's far from confirmation of course, but initial rumblings are positive. Trine 2 has shown that PS4 is capable of delivering stereoscopic 2x1080p/60 images.

2. I don't see lack of software as a problem. Yes, we'll get some novelty games that jump in the bandwagon (just pick a generic title and put VR on the end) but there should also be Core games created with optional VR in mind as well as the possibility of older games having VR retro-fitted.

According to Edge the VR reveal is happening at GDC. Developers have told them the tech if far superior to the original Occulus Rift and is on par with their latest version.

A tech demo will come from one of Sony's first party studios.

Driveclub VR..... Please!

I'm somewhat of a "lone gamer" and the idea of sitting alone in my room with a visor on definitely isn't something that i'd be interested in. I also imagine that these VR headsets will be quite expensive and so i strongly doubt that they'd catch on with the general public. I can see this being Sony's next "Move" or "Eye Toy" quite frankly.

Wish they would concentrate on getting the games out on time and stop messing around with niche products, or we'll end up with the best spec'd book end on the market.

Drive Club looks like it's been pushed back to 2015
And so far no AAA titles

VR headset - called Project Morpheus - has been confirmed at GDC. Demos of Eve Valkyrie and Theif will be used to show off the system.

Looks quite smart as well, wonder what kind of price they will be asking for it.

After spending a fortune on a projector, how do I convince the other half that I now need to play with these on instead and ignore the home cinema setup?

I don't know yet if I want VR. Occulus Rift and Star Citizen might be amazing, but will probably require most people to perform fairly hefty upgrades. As for the PS4 version (or Occulus Rift, depending on whether or not I get a PS4), I'm not sure...if it is <£100 then I'm in regardless, <£200 I would strongly consider if it had good support, £200+ then I'm out. It also depends on whether or not it will require extra peripherals like Move and a camera. In saying that, for Sony I imagine it's more about getting it introduced this gen and then capitalising upon any momentum in the next gen.

I doubt this would go for less than £200 unless Sony heavily subsidize it. I haven't really read into this yet but I assume it has two LCD displays running at nearly 1080p. Those things don't come cheap.

My guess is that it will have one screen at 1920 x 1080 and use optics to split this screen between two eyes, this is how the Oculus Rift does it.

It certainly looks interesting, I will pick one up when its available assuming it isn't more expensive than a PS4 lol

EDIT:

looking at the specs it appears I was correct, it will have one 1920 x 1080 5 inch screen that will provide 960 x 1080 to each eye. It will use the PS move camera on the PS4 running at 1000Hz for very low latency free tracking and full 360 degrees movement.

Component: Processor unit, head-mounted unit
Display Method: LCD
Panel Size: 5 inches
Panel Resolution: 1920×RGB×1080 (960×RGB×1080 per eye)
Field of View: 90 degrees
Sensors: Accelerometer, Gyroscope
Connection interface: HDMI + USB
Function: 3D audio, Social Screen
- 90 degree field of view
- 1000Hz tracking
- 3 meter working volume
- Full 360 degrees
- Supports forward prediction
- DualShock 4 and PS Move with the same camera
- True spacial sound, synthesized by stimulating the human ear.
- Highly Adjustable
- Comfortable for Prolonged use
- Direct on-board audio jack for headphones.
- 'Social Screen feature' mirrors experience onto TV (Allows for unique asymmetric gameplay)
- No weight placed on nose or cheeks.

It's the sort of thing I'd like to try before I buy. Shouldn't be a problem tho, easily set-up in a Game store!

Not excited by this but definitely curious.

You'd be surprised, for modest volumes the sort of 1080p display used in smartphones can come in well under $50 - for large volumes, significantly less - and Sony is well placed to buy or manufacture them!

As per the Oculus, it is a single display - and LCD rather than OLED, unless that changes, putting it at lower cost than cutting edge.
