Looks like we finally have an official name.

The unoriginal, and rather literal PlayStation VR.

Does what it says on the tin I suppose.

Ha ha. Apart from the erroneous 4 I wasn't far off.

I even started a Twitter account https://twitter.com/ps4vrnews in a vain attempt to blag a cheeky press pass some day. I might need more than my 1 follower though. :/

Anyway, more news.

Square Enix are producing a playable demo based on Final Fantasy XIV (there won't be a VR mode for the full game sadly) while Koei are bringing Dynasty Warriors 8 to PSVR as a first person game.

I was reading about the Final Fantasy XIV game on IGN earlier and the jist I got was that the full game was playable through VR as the game already has a first person view.

Unless I misread it, or more details came out today.

Cracking game tho. Would be phenomenal in VR. I'd just get lost in the world all over again.

My bad, only parts of Eorza will be explorable, and there will be a graphics downgrade.

Still, I look forward to that.

I hope there will be some games for us adults. Maybe a beach game or something or you need to find a girlfriend and take her out and stuff and we can hold her hand and take her for a swim.

I managed to try out PlayStation VR today with a demo of EVE Valkyrie.

I found the headset itself to be surprisingly light, very comfortable and easily adjustable to suit your own eyesight. it's also intuitive to use - looking around the environment was completely natural and convincing with no noticeable lag and no sign of the dreaded VR nausea.

It's often said the key to a successful VR experience is to create "presence" - a sense of actually being there - and this certainly worked for me. Tellingly, as I looked down at my avatar's legs in the cockpit, I felt compelled to move my own legs to match that position. That was weird.

The demo itself was a fairly basic, yet enthralling experience, piloting a small fighter craft amongst a debris field of wrecked space cruisers, while using a combination of guns and missiles you hunt down enemy targets. The difference here is the ability to move your head in any direction to track targets as they move around, and above your ship. Very cool.

I'm fully aware that what I used today is not the final consumer version of either the hardware or software. Being objective, there are a couple of minor points I should mention. Firstly, being so close to a screen it's inevitable that the screen's pixels are visible, giving a slight "screendoor" effect. Also, the game itself suffered with some noticeable aliasing. That said, once I was immersed in that world those issues mattered little and, for me, the advantages of playing in VR far outweighed any negatives.

Overall it was an amazing experience and one I am eager to try again. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes.

A DS4. It's space dogfighting, Right trigger is for guns. You hild left trigger to activate missiles and look at a target to lock on to it, then release to fire. X for boost and steer the craft with the left stick.

Interesting that Volume: Coda was announced specifically for Playstation VR and is coming out early next year, makes one assume Playstation Experience in LA will announce that the PSVR will become available in either February or March. OR alternatively... is it possible they could pull a "Here's our virtual reality machine, you can buy it in stores today" so that its available for Christmas.

Shuhei came out and said it'd be the same retail price of a brand new console, so £350-£400 sounds about right, which is obvs not gonna have many people rushing out to get one.

I thought PSVR was represented pretty well by Sony at Paris Games Week with quite a few announcements and updates.

PSVR showcase - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw6x80Qdzak

It's great to see big name games like Gran Turismo Sport and Tekken 7 confirmed to be getting VR support. Then came the news about that Driveclub prototype which has massive potential.

There was also....

RIGS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7qC8xdxrkg

Megaton Rainfall https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNlcTmqZ_GM

Robinson: The Journey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOZtqDhQP44

Battlezone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ienhqxbaVdo

Until Dawn - Rush Of Blood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaFkKayZAU0

Sony have also confirmed over 200 developers are currently working on PSVR titles. We might still be waiting for that all important price and release date, but I don't think lack of content will be a problem.

Think they will announce price, release at Playstation Experience

So lets get this right as well as the headset we will need to buy the camera and move controller.

Also with the headset being a wired connection is there a possibilty you may pull it out while jumping/moving etc?

I don't think the move controller will be fundamental, from what I can gather the light bar on the DS4 works the same way as the move controller. Maybe some games require you to have the move controller but I can't see it being a general use thing.

I was under the impression the VR was wireless? If it's not then yeah, I could see myself accidentally pulling out a wire from time to time.

Yeah, as far as I can tell most games will use the DS4. It's great for driving, flying, and generally controlling movement. Eve Valkyrie, RIGS, Battlezone all use it. It can even be used for simple aiming of guns, as demonstrated with The Deep.

PS Move will be ideal for games where you're manipulating objects using 2 virtual hands or perhaps precision shooting, as in London Heist.

Ideally, Sony would have liked PSVR to have been wireless, but they said 1080p at 120 hz was simply too much data to transmit.

Hopefully they'll sell PSVR as a standalone product for those of us that already have the camera and/or PS Move, and then bundles for anyone needing all the additional kit.

I imagine PS VR 2 will be wireless. Surely the technology to do that cant be too far off.
