Has anyone ever done this, for instance buying 1/2 a cow or 1/2 pig ?

A neighbour of mine asked if I wanted to buy 1/2 pig a couple of years ago, but he was inundated with requests and I didn't get a look in.

We eat a lot of meat, beef being a favourite. We like joints, steaks, mince etc ... so I was thinking about purchasing in bulk. But from where ?

I have had a look on Google and at various local butchers websites, but no one advertises that they do this. Ideally I would rather have it chopped up and delivered, freezer ready.

Look around and find a good local butcher, they do exist.

There's plenty of online companies that do this, but I would first suggest you see if there's a abattoir near you - they often have public counters.

Oh I'd totally agree that local is best, but it depends where you live. I've had a few homes where the "local" butcher's were simply not up to scratch. I'm fortunate to have access to a couple of good butchers at present where I do buy most of my meat but...

Neither stock mutton, I appear to be the only one interested in it.
Only one gets goat in, and then rarely now because it's too pricey
For those reasons I do occasionally call on alternative meats. I'll also confess to buying their ready to casserole rabbit meat (purely for laziness) which I could easily get from my butcher or other sources but on the bone.

I should also admit I've never even asked my local guys if they can source buffalo which is another of my favourites
