ask CPW
it seems odd that you would propose that theory without having some idea as to who it might be. |

Who made you the "hope" police. *sigh*
![]() rosetech - you have made me chuckle ![]() on a more on - topic note my daughter dropped her N4 last night and its a complete write-off. Im loather to fork out over £100 just to get a new screen on and was considering buying her a Moto G as a replacement. Might look at the N5 for her instead at this price. I have the N5 and I have been very impressed with it. |

I want to replace my ageing iPhone 4 with a 4G phone, and am now very tempted by this at the new price. The quality control lottery I read about on XDA dev is still putting me off tho, not sure I can deal with a few RMA's.
I have a Nexus 5, as does the Mrs and we have had no problems with them. |

I love the whole concept of a "hope police" and I am going to do my best to use that term regularly

you're the one suggesting the cost is 'subsidised' i'm simply asking you who you think might be doing this.
it seems odd that you would propose that theory without having some idea as to who it might be. my thoughts?.... Findus (see previous post). |

i gave three possible scenarios, one of them was a subsidised price.
my thoughts?.... Findus (see previous post). they've either bought them in huge bulk so can sell them cheaper than what google can (unlikely), they are selling them at a loss (unlikely), or they are getting them at a subsidised price. you've ruled out two of them. and you're left with saying they are being 'subsidised' but with no suggestion of by whom. if you misspoke and do not now think they are being subsidised then you can say that. |

when you put them side by side mate the difference is pretty negligible to be honest, they are bigger but not by much that's for sure.

I don't see a subsidised price here, No way the build price is near $300 probably less than $200

the theory being that google makes up for it via ad revenues etc (ie it's a loss leader for google). if that is to be believed that CPW must be selling either at cost or at a loss. but then you have to ask why would CPW do that, unless there is something in it for them. |

Isnt a Note 3 build cost less than $250 and I'd guess that the neuxs 5 is cheaper to build.

there are several internet reports (from reputable sites) that suggest that google itself may be selling it at close to cost or at a loss via the play store.

you have a link to someone suggesting the Bill of Parts for an N5 is close to £350 which is what play are charging for the 32GB?
of course the UK price of £350 includes 20% VAT and import duties. and the individual parts cost are not the only costs involved in developing, building and selling any device. but of course you knew that already. |

Given the build costs of other phones I would reckon this is a very small margin for CPW so my guess is they knew what may be coming from Spain soon. I can't see why Google would provide any subsidy for CPW to sell these I also think the Nexus line will be replaced by play edition devices at some point |

I got round that by just picking 500 songs i really liked and not 25,000 that were a bit shite.
You should not have to cut back especially with the price of memory so low nowadays with decent memory less than £20/32gb (and that's just the cost for us to buy) . Phones should have 32gb minimum going upto 128gb if they don't have an SD card slot. |

I agree several phones I would have considered have been ruled out because of poor memory or crazy prices for an extra 16gb.
