I actually can't believe how many people are bashing Moffat for trying to 'make Clara and Danny, the new Rose and Mickey'. Just because he shares the same skin colour does not mean he'll be in any way similar to Mickey. People are also saying he's just making Amy and Rory MK 2. The stuff I've seen on twitter is utter tripe. Some people just don't like his name, 'Danny Pink? Moffat has lost his marbles'. I understand not everyone likes Moffat's writing but some people will find anything to insult him with. There are people saying how stupid it is because he'll just be a love interest for Clara. RTD's era had the same, all of his companions had love interests. ROSE HAD 4 FOR GOD'S SAKE.

Just the usual doom mongers/soothsayers on Twitter who will bash Moffat whatever. Fact is he cant win. Anything he does will be slated by some unless its bringing back Rose and Tennant. As such their opinions are worthless. Most fans will be excited to see this new character. I actually think the name is a little silly. But so what?
and some of the stuff I've seen written comparing him to Mickey is borderline racism and at worst just flat out racist. Whether they intend it or not there's some real ignorance being shown. Seeing comments from fellow Doctor who fans like 'i cant tell the difference between him and Mickey' make me wonder what show these people are watching and just how bloody stupid they must be. It basically translates to 'Oh look! A person of colour in Doctor Who! Its Mickey again!'. Shocking really.

I find it funny that we've known about him for less than 12 hours (and only actually know his name) and already people seem to have decided his entire story arc! Personally I'm glad they've introduced a third character- I think it sort of proves Moffat is going to move on with Peter and not keep be all nostalgic about Matt's era

Except... it's tempting to think they could be another Amy and Rory... but like I said, I'll wait and see. But that won't make this thread very interesting will it?
![]() And yes its probably silly to base anything on one photo but here goes...just based on his promo pic there's something that suggests a formidable and strong character. Just something about it that hopefully means its not going to be lovelorn loser fighting for Claras affections. If that's we what get then I will be sorely disappointed. Plus hopefully no love triangle. I want Danny to challenge the Doctor. |

Brave as he is as a writer and much as I would welcome it I think even Moffat knows there needs to at least a bit of romance or potential romance these days and so I expect that to be an angle. But I really hope he doesn't repeat the Mickey/Rose or Amy/Rory dynamic. No reason why he should as there are a million ways it could play out.
And yes its probably silly to base anything on one photo but here goes...just based on his promo pic there's something that suggests a formidable and strong character. Just something about it that hopefully means its not going to be lovelorn loser fighting for Claras affections. If that's we what get then I will be sorely disappointed. Plus hopefully no love triangle. I want Danny to challenge the Doctor. I'm biased against male companions, I'll admit to that, but putting that bias aside I agree the best way to go will be an Ian Chesterton type who can (convincingly) be his own man. And Ian had a very quietly portrayed flirtation with Barbara that worked really nicely. I actually have no problem with a romantic element to the show, just as long as they're character moments and not the plot, or even the sub-plot. What I disliked about the Amy and Rory relationship was how it was totally unrelated to the character of the Doctor. In Asylum of the Daleks for example their marital issues were thrown in purely for melodrama and had no real substance, lasting consequences (so can't accurately be called 'character development'), or relevance to the story of the Doctor. The greatest innovation RTD brought to the show was putting the companion at the forefront and making the ongoing story about how the doctor impacts upon their world, but you have to be strict about keeping it to that or it becomes soap opera. I totally agree that Moffat has too strong a commercial sensibility (and that is a pro, not a con) to not give the part of the audience who enjoy a little romance (which could actually be the majority) a little something. The relationship between the Doctor and Clara can be as plutonic a relationship as is possible but he still had them kiss in 'The Snowmen'. So it's just a question of how he will go about it really. Thinking about it logically, he can't really be a Rory or Micky anyway. The point of Micky's character was to show that an ordinary guy couldn't compete with the Doctor, so hardly a good way to bring romance into the show. And a doting Rory type wouldn't really work either because he would look weak compared to the Doctor. And I just don't think it's Moffat's style to have Clara 'settle' for him as a surrogate. So I expect the character to have a little chops. |

I wonder when he'll join because I want Twelve and Clara to have at least a few adventures by themselves before a third joins the fun.

Whilst I was, for some reason, hoping for a Victorian male companion, maybe played by Damien Molony, I am incredibly excited to meet Danny Pink. I just hope he's interesting, likeable and doesn't bring any more dislike to Clara.

Jenna said at filming today that this was her new boyfriend, not sure whether it was tongue or cheek or if this Danny character is Clara's boyfriend.

I assume that they will be doing a romantic thing because the actors have been in a show together before, suggesting they want some kind of chemistry. |

Yes they did and yes they are. They were both involved in Jenna's (and which ended in his as well) big exit story line
