Seems to be a bit of a problem, got a 1080p HD TV after all these years and now I find that more often than not I've got next to no aspect ratio control.
On the Sony TV, anything that is connected to the HDMI can only be displayed in 16:9 and I can't get round it using the aspect ratio button on the remote as I can for the SCART inputs, I might have a 4:3 programme via the Sky HD box, I might have a game which is actually in 4:3 being stretched on the PS3, it's one reason to keep the SD scarts in use.
Generally speaking everything will either be in full widescreen, forced letterboxed 4:3 or 4:3 simply stretched to 16:9 so you are forced to watch it stretched with nothing you can do to override it. Makes you wonder why they didn't think about a solution for inevitable 4:3 material being watched over HDMI.
One good example is Gold being shown on the Sky HD via HDMI, just simply stretched. The PS3 is worse as you cannot have an SD output at the same time unlike the Sky HD box, so you are forced to view older games stretched.
