Is it time for an alternative OS to Android?
At the moment there's very few alternatives and I see Nokia even moved to Android. Who can blame them as Windows phone was always going to be terrible. What I mean is a new OS not silly tiles like Windows but one build to offer the best of Android and IOS.
I'd much prefer to see manufacturers go back to individual software for each handset. For example Sony should be able to come up with something better than what they have now. Samsung use to have Bada OS and the Pixon phone range was always better looking than the Galaxy. If Samsung want to take on Apple they should ditch the tried Galaxy name. Sounds like a bar of chocolate or something from space. The curved edges are so early 2000's. Look how much sleeker the Pixon 12 was: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_m891...review-367.php Sadly another year of Android clones awaits and a long wait until Iphone 6. Apple need not worry the Iphone 5S is more than up to the job rather than the cheap plastic S5. |

I loved it too until forced to take up Android.
Aside from the lack of built-in app store there was very little Symbian couldn't do. It even gave more access to low-level hardware readings than Android, such as real-time current draw readings precise to 0.1mA four times a second. |

In the PC forum someone asked why less people see to be on the forum - threads like this is one reason.

It will be hard to stop Android at this point. It has 80% of the global market. Windows Phone has been struggling even to start up and it has been out for 4 years now. Blackberry is all but dead, WebOS and Symbian were killed off years ago and iOS is starting to crack under the pressure.
The only threat/competitor to Android, one that Google is very scared about, comes from within itself. Android forks. Amazon's Kindle OS is a fork of Android and has become very successful without Google's input, Xiaomi uses MIUI, a variant of Android and now Nokia is trying it with their X devices. However this competition can only come from non-OHA manufacturers, so even then it's still only a small possibility. Once Google achieves a full grip on Android devices with their own services prevailing, which they are close to doing, then I think the so called "smartphone wars" will have been won. |

In fact, I'm pretty sure he did this exact thread last year. If he wants clones, he should look at iOS which has barely changed since 2007!! |

And why exactly would anyone want to do that?

Well for one you could see exactly how much power each app, feature, or radio was using down to the second.

So, you want every phone to have a different OS? I think that's the single most stupid thing i have ever seen from anyone on here in a very long time. First, what is the point? Second, you expect devs to write apps for every single variation of OS and also make it cross platform? |

Not many consumers give a toss about low-level hardware readings.

Yes it is. You made it about Android and iOS the second you decided to start your usual nonsense slagging other OS's off and putting iOS on a pedestal is doesn't even remotely deserve.

It's so stupid only six years ago every phone did have its own os? Samsung had different software to LG for example.
It's just some people are pro Android fans here. Yes, years ago there was a plethora of OS's and it was frankly a mess. There is absolutely no reason now to add more mobile OS's to the market. Oh, and if that pro Android was directed at me, it shows how clueless you are. I don't do brand loyalty. If Apple made a decent sized screen phone and let me change the way i view my home screens, then i would have another. As it stands, its still the same boring OS it was in 2007 with the same bland look which cannot be changed. With Android for me at the moment, i can have a great and functional OS which i can change and customise MY way with my choice of hardware. Again something lacking with apple. |

What's wrong with what Sony have now? Its Android but they put their own stamp on it unlike Samsung's stock skin. Now that is ugly.

What is Tizen? This is the first time I have seen it mentioned. If it was a serious contender for a new version of popular phone it must be almost ready to go! |
