Last week I bought a Roku 2 XS from Maplin. No instruction book included BTW

The other night while watching Question Time on iPlayer the content stopped playing while the Roku checked for an update . The same thing happened again at around 9.30pm last night while watching Drop the dead donkey on 4od.

After the update check the Roku then showed a Roku logo for a while and then dumped me back to the main menu so I have to select the channel, find the TV show again and scroll to the point it stopped to continue viewing.

I am finding this interruption a tad annoying.

Is there any way to turn auto updates off Or to tell the Roku to check for updates at 1am for example when I am not watching the TV?

I think the only way to stop the updates is to root the box, see the following link

http://www.gtvhacker.com/index.php/Exploiting_Roku

Alternatively, try a hard reset as the previous owner may have been mucking about with settings. The Roku site has a step-by-step set-up guide here if you hard reset.

http://support.roku.com/entries/2222...XS-model-3100-

and

Perform a Soft or Hard Reset Procedure

Roku Soft Reset:

There is a small reset in back of your Roku. Take a paper clip and gently press the button. This will cause your Roku to Soft Reset. All your settings and channels will be saved.

Soft Reset from Remote:

Home 5 times
Up 1 time
Rewind 2 times
Fast Forward 2 times

Roku Hard Reset:

A hard reset will wipe everything from your Roku and make it just like the day you took it out of the box. All your network settings, account and password plus all your channels will need to be entered again after performing a hard reset. If performing a soft reset does not take care of the problem a Hard Reset is the next best step.

Remove all cables from the back of your Roku except for the Power cord.
Press and hold the Reset button on the back of the Roku for approximatly 15 seconds.
While continuing to hold the Reset button, remove the Power cord from behind your Roku.
Release the Reset button, and than plug all of the cords back into your Roku.

You will than be asked to go through the setup process again.
You can also perform a hard reset by selecting Settings > Factory reset > Factory reset > Yes from the Roku settings menu.

I have never had my Roku 2 update while I was using it, so maybe a hard reset will cure it - worth a try as it doesn't take long to do and set up again.

Sorry Jeff I should have said I bought the Roku brand new from Maplin. Or do they pass off used goods as new??? I hope not

Thanks for your reply. A bit too *Techy* for me but I will look further into the links you provided.

I've had my Roku2XS for a year, and I've never seen it interrupt a programme to do an update. It doesn't sound like normal behaviour for the box to me.

Thanks for the reply Clusterbombed.

Last night I did a manual update check before I started watching, maybe this is the only workaround to the problem.

Under settings the Roku said "Your Roku player checks for software and channel updates automatically once per day."

I wonder how Roku determine what time of day a Roku checks. I can't imagine that every Roku in the UK checks for updates at the same time.

BTW. I have emailed Roku about this, awaiting a reply.

It seems that I was wrong. My problem was not caused by checks for software and channel updates. Though their times did appear to coincide with the issue.

I have just spoken to a very nice Man at Maplin on the phone and it seems that the problem was caused by my Roku 2 XS Rebooting for no apparent reason.

The cure (Hopefully, I will have to wait and see) was to access the Roku Secret menu and update the current software version with the same software version. Something about 'Flashing the Roku box'.

Fingers crossed and I hope this helps others.

I would also like to say that I am very happy with the Roku 2 XS and the outstanding customer care from Maplin.

Glad you got it sorted. I misread your post and assumed it was a Maplin "B" grade or something as there was no manual - mine came with a "get started" sheet (hardly a manual in the real sense) but it did guide me through the set up, update etc.

I think the Roku box is great, especially for catch up and Netflix for my non-smart TV.

Anyway, hopefully your issues are a thing of the past.

Thanks for your reply Jeff.

I managed to set up the Roku without the manual but later found a pdf download of it.

Like you I am very pleased with the Roku. I have not tried Netflix yet as I am finding plenty of content on 4od etc to keep me going for now.

As you say hopefully my issues are a thing of the past, time will tell. I had not problems last night.

If anything goes pear shaped I will post it on here. If I don't post anything then assume the problem is fixed.

Last night (March 5th) at about 20.30 hours while watching Look North on BBC iPlayer the same problem returned (Rebooting for no apparent reason).

I have now taken the Roku 2 XS back to Maplin and paid the extra for the Roku 3.

Hopefully the same issues will not occur on this top of the range Roku model.

Fingers crossed again.

Shame, thats no good for me then. I've thought about a Roku box before to compliment my Apple TV but have often wondered about the sound. Didn't know Maplins stock them so may take a trip along there.

No. None of the Roku boxes have optical out.

The idea is to plug the HDMI into a Surround Sound Amp and then back out via HDMI to the TV set.

Please see http://support.roku.com/entries/2228...heater-#scene3

In answer to jimba. My Surround Sound Amp does not have any HDMI inputs so I go HDMI into the TV and then optical cable from the TV out into the Amp.

I don't use Netflix so I am not sure if this set up passes Surround Sound through.
