Tv help please..
Iv'e had my sony kdl 37W 5710 for about 4 or 5 years now and although it has been a great tv, there has always been a few flaws in PQ, most specifically the effect seen on the wall in the attached pic..I don't even know what the effect is called or what causes it, I have no Idea whether its to do with the the quality of the source, which was 1080p or whether its something to do with how the tv manages it..Any how being as I have been looking to get a new set I wonder, has this kind of image flaw improved with the tvs out now? or is there something in picture settings that would improve it. As you are probably aware I am a bit of a numpty when it comes to this kind of thing but if anyone can tell me what the cause of this effect Is I would be very greatful.

Just because it comes from a 1080 source does not mean the Picture Quality will be at 1080.
An example of this is watching tv showing an old programme at 576. When I see the guys face it is totally washed out. Maybe you could get a Star Wars dvd / blu ray and go through the THX setup ? I would also watch kids tvs and modern cartoons. Kids will not watch rubbish and the picture quality in these cartoons are a good test for your tv. My Sony which I don't rate very highly compared to my Panasonics, really shines with Sky HD pictures or 1080 quality, give it 720 and it struggles. |

What was the source of the picture? It looks very much like an MPEG encoding artefact. If it was a SD TV channel operating on a low bitrate then you often see effects like this and worse. Not really a fault with the TV and might not be totally eradicated if you buy a new one.
