Samsung smart tv going slow
Hi I have a Samsung f5500 32inch tv. I have had it for about seven months now and it is just so slow and tempermental.
I put up with it thinking it would improve but if anything it is worse. Normal teletext takes an age to change page and even to load and software updates from Samsung I usually have to give up on. Some days it just point blank refuses to connect to the internet at all. The most recent update is saying it will take 23 hours to download surely this is not right? I have checked my internet connection, wi-fi etc and that is all working as it should. Is this a common problem with this tv? is my tv faulty? or is this just how it is with smart tvs? As far as I am aware the tv is dual core but I do not think it could be any slower with the interactive smart features. |

My Samsung D6530's 'Smart TV' features are slow too.
Other people have said they don't have a problem so not sure what the cause is. |

I have an idea why teletext might be slow...
The tv connects up to samsung servers, so if they are busy or configured to download as a slow speed, then that might explain it. Is there an option to update via USB or is it Samsung apps that are trying to update themselves which can only be done via the smart hub? |

digital text and bbc red button implimentation does vary a lot between tvs and various freeview boxes. we have a rather dated sony lcd which many ds members wouldnt give house space but these features work very well and quickly (seldome makes it crash, and faster than the old style teletext-this tv was used with analogue in the past). it has automatically updated its self as well.
on the other hand, our tiny grundig 15.5 lcd is unstable much of the time when the red button is pressed. pages can fail to load, the service can freeze, and its often very slow at loading pages. its still on the original software too, never had an update. actual tv service works fine though. |

EPGs are the main things I dislike going slow.
On my Samsung it is annoying having to wait just to go from one programme to another in the EPG. I press the right button, wait, it goes to the next programme, then press the button again, wait, and get to the 3rd programme along. The delay doesn't seem necessary as the programme data is there. Just a poor implemented EPG IMO. |

I have a D6530 too and it takes about 10 seconds to display the picture from power on, 4 seconds to change channels entering channel numbers manually and by channel up/down, and 2-3 seconds via previous channel.
The EPG displays immediately once the TV has got into its stride, but from power on it takes about 2 minutes before it populates, and it is quite slow scrolling up/down single channel but quick via page up/down, and the USB HDD isn't recognised as an input source for about 2 minutes either, which can be slightly annoying if I want to pause/record the channel asap. I never update the software, (my current version is 001018) so can't help there, sorry. |

freeview epg's vary a lot from set to set and from box to box - its a pet hate of mine.
Some are rubbish and are best never used imo! Others are fantastic. Worst are the ones where when you load the epg you only get epg data for that channel.....you cant see other channel listings until you actually change channel and load the epg again. Sort of "epg for each channel". Most stupid idea every invented. The sony ones seem ok, they are quick and update in the background, plus like sky/freesat you can browse the contents of other chs. But I prefer the Freesat and Sky epgs tbh. Most consistent and you can browse all channels. Why wasn't this idea rolled out to freeview hardware? |

From my personal experience, every "cheap and nasty" Freeview STB or Freeview integrated TV set I have used the red button features on, there has never been any lagging or delays. Why is this? Does the equipment love me or something?

I see they're now trying to do a similar scheme again - so yet another totally incompatible system coming up. |

Teletext (or digital text as it's now called) comes via the signal, nothing to do with Samsung or their servers - it comes via Freeview (or Sky, or VM etc.)

I've never understood why EPGs can be so slow.
Surely it is just text? I know there is a lot of it but if it is just text then it can't be that big a transfer, especially if they do it in increments. |

but processed by the cpu, which introduces a conflict - the better/faster the cpu the more expensive it is which pushes up the price of the tv or narrows the profit margin. Use a cheaper, slower cpu, and you can sell the tv for less or at least widen your profit margin.
