If the beeb cancelled dr who, would an online company pick it up?

Imagine if the bbc wielded the act. Could dr who be viable for online streaming? We have seen Ripper St saved in this way, and Netflix has been successful with house of cards. Would dr who work in the same way, given it is already highly successful to the online audiences...

I hope not as I doubt a format like that could support or indeed be interested in it for 50+ years. besides, with the ratings its getting and the extra funding for BBC One, I doubt t will be cancelled anytime soon.

Nope. Never gonna happen. Even if and when the BBC rest the show for a bit while the BBC exists they will never give the rights up. And nor should they. Doctor Who belongs at the BBC.

Yes the BBC own the Doctor Who rights outright they wont give them up. I see Doctor Who and other drama getting more funding as the only good thing about the idea of closing BBC3!

Has there ever been an attempt to "comedically copy" Doctor Who. I know there have been the fun red nose day episodes and fan tributes. What I mean is something like "Austin Powers", which was a comedy but respectful take on Bond. ?

I don't think so, certainly nothing more than a sketch. But the thing about Bond that makes it so easy to spoof is that it always took itself very seriously. Doctor Who never really has.

Over on Gallifrey Base, a few people have claimed that the rights to Doctor Who were transferred to BBC Worldwide in the early 1990s. If this is true (and that's a big if), Worldwide could effectively produce a commercial version of the show, regardless of a BBC commission. Something along the lines of the current deal with Orphan Black.

Bill and Ted is about the closest you get. Time travelling phone booth, bigger on the inside, very referential.

Clearly you've never seen Season 6 (2011)!

Licensing a program for someone else to make doesn't necessarily mean giving up the rights. What the OP describes is pretty much how the McGann movie (which would have become a series) was made.

Bill and Ted as said certainly took ideas from DW there's been numerous sketches but the closest thing to a show is Inspector Spacetime.

Quote:
“
"Inspector Spacetime" is a popular British science fiction television programme that has been on the air continuously for over fifty years. Created by (Ex) Sir Anthony Bonham Pease, its popularity has grown internationally since its debut in the early '60s. It has now become a significant pop culture icon spawning spin offs, a slew of merchandise, and even a few imitators. Just in time for its fiftieth anniversary, an Americanized version of the show launched in 2012 although it's received unfavorable reviews so far.”

Ok, it's a show within a show rather than a real show (though IIRC there was talk of making a real version of it).

Edit
In fact they did make a web series but could not call it Inspector Spacetime.

Untitled Web Series About a Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time

Bill and Ted is not a comedy attempt to copy Doctor Who. At all.
