Can anybody please help with the following issue:-

I recently purchased a Honestech VHS to DVD unit. I have burnt one DVD using it, and when I play the DVD through a standalone DVD player, the picture has a judder on it every few seconds making the playback unwatchable. If I play the DVD through the DVD drive in my PC, the playback is fine.

I am pretty sure it is not the standalone DVD player that is at fault as there is no issue with playing other DVDs through it, and I have tried a couple of players with the same results.

What was the source of the recording? Was it a tape you made yourself or a commercially made move/TV programme tape?

If the latter it quite likely has copy protection built in. Which would transfer over to the DVD. This might be ignored by the computer but not a stand alone player.

Sounds more like you have either captured an NTSC VHS but converted it to PAL when burning, or it was a PAL tape but you've burned it is an NTSC DVD.

If it is a PAL tape you need to make sure that the settings in your capture and DVD burning software are set to capture/convert and burn as PAL DVD. Set the software to PAL DVD format, 720x576 at 25fps.

Converting between NTSC and PAL does very often produce such juddering, especially on panning shots etc.

Judder and dodgy playback can also occur with old tapes too when converting to DVD.

Could also be an incorrect interlaced field order. In the UK lower field first is the norm

yes.

make sure the capture settings are for european pal (analogue tv system) dvd transfer. the default settings could well be ntsc as said. with a different frame rate .....

otherwise ...... if some other problem then i would recommend processing the capture file with free software avidemux which has many avisynth filters built in and ready to use. you just tweak a parameter and it shows a preview of what that will look like after processing .......

Very true, that would also show up as some juddering too.

No, apart from DV (which is BFF the world over), all native UK "PAL" SD and HD content will be TFF (top/upper field first).

Cheers,
David.
