What a pointless use of HD space. Who funds this useless channel?

Except no one else seems to want that spectrum....
So if no one else wants it ... Is it being wasted ?
And it is owned and operated by the media Trust who are funded by these organisations
http://www.mediatrust.org/about-us/funders-1/

And it also provides a means for programmes from smaller channels to be transmitted with access services so that they meet their quota,

If they have a slot on com7 or 8 this can be 24 hours
Thus we get a 24 hr service and some discovery etc etc programmes in HD .

Its farcial at the momemt they are pushing HD when actually all we are getting is crap.

Simply save the cost and don't commission a new multiplex when they don't have real demand.

Arqiva have made the decision presumably on good commercial grounds ...
And I know that the BBC support for it will save the BBC money at DSO 2 co timed with code and mux tech refresh as everything goes T2 ... And Com 7 and 8 close.

Well I say transfer some of the least watched commercial channels from COMs 4, 5 and 6 then whats left form 4, 5 and 6 shove on 4 and 5 only and force COM 6 to go DVB-T2! This would drive DVB-T2 take up as the space created could be cheaply used to launch tonnes of SD AVC channels on COM 6 and have the ones back from COM 8 thats 20-27 new channels on COM 6 almost overnight!
The best part is the ones that would then be transfered to DVB-T2 would least effect people and the ones that launch would drive take up of DVB-T2 as they would be on ALL main transmitters

Not this again, it wouldn't drive DVB-T2 take up at all. The commercial channels need an audience, if this was attempted with the current level of DVB-T2 level of market penetration, they would be more likely to close down than accept the change. As far as the consumer is concerned, any attempt to enforce further upgrades, so soon after DSO, would be more likely to encourage them to take Sky/Freesat/Cable than to get into a perceived, endless, DTT upgrade cycle.

Indeed.

The interesting thing about this is that Community Channel doesn't have a HD version on any platform at the moment. Which raises the question, does it actually have HD content?

Or possible they have simply updated the licence to include a HD channel....

It is very likely that any access service quota material is HD , and have yo tried to make a TV programme even on "domestic kit" over these past 3 or so years in SD?

There will be HD material .. All be in not in the AS 11 DPP shim form the major broadcasters require ... But HD all the same.

And at the time, there did seem to be support from Channel 4 as well, support that seems to have vapourised.

Indeed because they know commercially the costs outweigh the benefits it seems. Its all a farce at the moment as you hsave YouView people moaning because they can't get channels, Freeview and some Freeview HD people with the same issues. Then others with the correct kit but simply can't have channels that are not broadcast. Not boding well at the moment.

Except that Channel 4 would have been fully aware of the costs and the coverage constraints at the very start when they helped to formulate and agree to the initial joint proposal with the BBC and Arqiva. They would also have been fully aware of the interim objective of encouraging the take-up of DVB-T2 kit

so will some government intervention make it a bit easier ...
The key move would be for Vince Cable to remove the Freeview Accreditation leaving only Freeview HD .....
thus the vast majority of the sales would be for T2/AVC/AAC/HD kit .... thus making the Transition when it comes to be a lot easier.
(And spread the expenditure needed in homes and on most peoples roofs when DSO2 occurs (to sell spectrum to the Mobile industry.)

From the BBC (and any broadcaster) - transmitting both SD and HD is expensive , and do they get extra income for going HD ?
- which like going for digital emission (with dual illumination) - costs quite a lot.....

The LF payer paid for the Help scheme at the last DSO - and the government snaffled the vast underspend ... and then BBC pays more than the Scheme to fund Broadband!

The community channel seems to be looking for a cheap way of getting ist content out to the UK public and Probabaly COM7 is very good value for money - all be it with its restricted coverage. ..... and it may be that one of their supporters is giving its services ....

So like the BBC the community Channel is helping drive something which seems to have a public purposes as defined by the BBC trust.. (number 6 if you are interested).

Good luck to them !

It might be that they are biding their time and waiting for the COM7 rollout to complete before launching something. If it's a "big name" channel like Film4 HD, they would probably rather say "Film4 HD is now on Freeview!* * in selected areas" than "Film4 HD is now on Freeview!* * a bit, more people will get it later probably, but we can't tell you when". Or maybe they are just waiting for contracts to expire so they can bring the channels they want, rather than something like C4+1HD.

Not directly, but one of the original purposes of Freeview was to give a stronger platform for the PSBs. Bringing HD channels to Freeview stops people moving to Sky for their TV, and thus benefits all channels on the platform as they get a larger viewing share (they are one of 50 channels, rather than one of 500)

People want more choice amd plenty of channels want free view access but costs put them off.

So its in the consumers interest that this Freeview HD spec is enforced on all products sold, as this provided the IP channels with a low cost entry to the platform. Combine this with HD linier channels and the current offering and you have something that has some real appeal.

Problem is that pay TV seems to have hijacked YouView and now theor focus seems to be more content, including HD but delieeved via their IP system - which doesn't favour the casual consumer.

You are one selfish person, just because it suits you, you would force tens maybe hundreds of thousands of people to go out and buy new kit.

Thank god the people who make these decisions wont listen to you.

They should also rebrand the freeview and freeview HD equipment to freeview reduced and freeview full or something that makes the feeview DVB-T1 equipment look like it doesnt have everything! without it saying 'HD' as the 'HD' bit puts people off sometimes because they think 'oh I dont have a HD TV I dont need freeview HD'!
Where as something that says 'that this will get you all freeview channels' and 'this will get you most but not all the freeview channels' makes them go for the one that will get all of them!
