Cheers for that, knew you'd be in the know. I guess the PSB's fund this as the CC is a supported channel by different broadcasters? I wonder if the HD version will also appear on DSAT once they have a decent HD output quota?

In the beginning the BBC was very supportive ... Or else it may not have been started.
One major stabilising factor is that it does all the subtitling for most of the Lower quota channels ( so they do not need subtitle facilities on their main channels)
... Which also drives a Red Bee involvement ,

It is on 24 hours a day?

Here is what they posted about it on facebook

"We are delighted to announce that Community Channel is now available in HD on Freeview 109 between 2am and 8am!

It's the same great, original programming that showcases community news from all over the planet alongside the work of new directors and community filmmakers, with extra-added brilliant quality. Win win!"

I can't check myself. Since I don't get COM7, till this coming Tuesday.

Yes, it is 24 hours.

If you don't have Al Jazeera HD then you are not receiving COM7, probably because it is not being broadcast on your transmitter. You won't be getting BBC4 HD and BBC News HD (and I think CBeebies HD) either.

Either some crossed lines or Arqiva have only promised those hours and the 24hr thing is temporary (I'd expect CC to shout about it being 24 hours though, even if it is temporary - didn't they go 24hr in SD temporarily at one point?)

The clue is in the name of the mux. The idea behind closing BBC Three transmissions and moving to internet delivery is to save money. Some of those savings will come from not paying Arqiva to broadcast on the COM7 mux.”

But the BBC have already stated that the BBC Three space on BBCB will be used for BBC one +1. So, as far as that goes, there are no plans to migrate services away from COM7 (which, let's face it, was promoted by the BBC as a way of pushing the penetration of DVb-T2 kit, part of its sixth Public Purpose)

Surely if they get 24h now its because they have paid for it and if they can pay for it now on COM 7 then why would they suddenly not get it later?
Between COM 7 and 8 there is still 5 HD slots on COM 8 and 2-3 SD slots (based on them cramming them in at low res and low bit rate like Al-Jazeera Arabic) on COM 7, so there is no fight for slots at the moment like on COMs 4, 5 and 6.

I didn't realise Al Jazeera Arabic is on COM7. I believe this is a backwards step, the start of the slippery slope. COM7 and COM8 should be exclusively for HD channels.

The whole raison d'être was to promote the uptake of DVB-T2 tuners, so there is no reason why SD channels could not launch if they wanted to.

Although a couple of HD-only muxes would have been a good idea.

And let's face it, broadcasters are not exactly beating the doors down to launch on these two muxes are they.

yes SD channels on DVB-T2 MUX will show people that DVB-T2 isnt just for HD!
Which is why I said earlier in this thread that 'Freeview' 'Freeview HD' should be renamed so that the former is seen as something less and the latter is seen as the norm now. With also changing the law so that the former is not an approved UK digital TV product.

Cheers for that info, guess historically before RedBee was reincarnated (ie before the BBC's playout operations was privatised) The CC has been played out by them hence how RedBee has inherited the channel?

So we have 4 HD and 1 SD channels on COM7.

Looks like the promised C4 HD channels are waiting for COM8.

It's currently (19:55hrs) in a 1080-25p wrapper, so it's coded as an HD signal, but delivered to Arqiva's coding centre as upscaled SD ?

Edit 19:58hrs. Coding is flipping between 1080-50i and 1080-25p depending upon picture content, just like the PSB3 HD channels.

Edit 20:00hrs BBC 4 HD, and News 24 HD do the same

or waiting till the full rollout of all the COM 7 and 8 MUXs at all the different TXs that are planned.
I doubt they are just waiting for COM 7 to fill up, as that would make no odds to a broadcaster surely that they be on COM 7 or COM 8, or a mix of the two.

Community Channel is run by a Charity (Media Trust). They do not pay for carriage. It is donated.

It was last available 24/7 on Freeview back in 2010 for a limited period.

Ah OK I see thats why it might get its hours cut! I cant see that happening unless the demand for COMs 7 and 8 suddenly shot up and they both got filled!

They must have to pay for the Sky and Freesat LCN's to keep within FRND rules?
