UK TV abroad
Some years ago the European Union ruled that it was illegal to prevent UK channels being viewed in other countries, how is it then that it is still not possible to get UK TV via the net abroad?

The EU ruled absolutely no such thing.
Which is probably where your confusion comes from. |

Did they not, sure there was a case involving a football game screened in a pub that went to the European courts and the broadcasters lost?
.... from memory this was a pub using Digitalb sports (i think)) but uk courts ruled that SkyUK must be used because of contarctual relationship with providor ...... http://recombu.com/digital/news/prem...rt_M11911.html |

Read what the directive says Quote:
The Directive establishes the principle that Member States must ensure freedom of reception and that they may not restrict retransmission on their territory of television programmes from other Member States. They may, however, suspend retransmission of television programmes which infringe the Directive's provisions on the protection of minors.
At http://europa.eu/legislation_summari.../l24101_en.htmThis just lays down what governments can do .... Not what broadcasters enforce under other legislation...... Mainly by the Berne convention of 1886 as amended http://www.wipo.int/treaties/en/text.jsp?file_id=283698 |

The appeal reduced the sentence from a criminal one to a civil one. That was, in a way, a victory, but the pub in question still *lost*. There were a number of interesting implications to come out of that case, about how much copyright protection sporting events attract, about if there was a prohibition of moving subscription equipment across territories etc. But there was nothing in that result that compelled a copyright holder to provide a programme to someone in all European territories. |
