If by "Sky" you mean Sky TV then you do not need a phone line at all. If you mean Sky Broadband then that will need a phone line.

Assuming ADSL or Fibre broadband you will need a phone line. Who you choose to install the line is entirely up to you. If you were thinking of Sky broadband there is no obligation to go with them for line rental as well.

Going with Sky for line rental may simplify things a bit as you can order both line and broadband at the same time. If you went with another line provider you would probably have to wait for the line to be installed before you could order broadband.

A full package of Sky TV, Sky Broadband and Sky Talk (line rental) may work out cheaper than mixing and matching and be somewhat less faffing about to arrange. But as I say it's entirely your choice whether you go all Sky or mix and match.

Thanks guys for reply.

I thought seeing as we've no phone line, we'd first have to take it with bt for a year before transferring it. I like the idea of paying for the year upfront, which sky have stopped doing

Some broadband suppliers like you to have an active phone line existing before you order. Sky at least will sort out installation for you. Mind you it would probably be the same guy from Openreach doing the installation whether you go for BT or Sky

OpenReach do all installs as far as I know - they "control" the "last mile" of the connection. They are obliged to treat all phone companies (including BT) equally.

Sky and / or a chosen ISP may well be able to place the line install order on your behalf. What you need to decide is whether you want an "all in" package from Sky or separate phone line, ISP provider (or a package of the two) along with Sky TV.

You DON'T need to rent your landline from Sky to have Sky Broadband, although you may find that discounts make it cheaper to have all services from the same supplier.

Here's one of the best offers around: £6.99 per month line rental with free evening (6pm) and weekend 01/02/03 calls:-

http://goo.gl/YmnKi5

If you don't make many daytime calls then you can route them via 18185 at 5p/call regardless of duration.

Check the total cost for all combinations of supplier, but the above is a good place to start.

Again, if you find a company that will give you a low or zero cost installation, you can still mix and match. However, some companies will block 1815 but Primus has promised not to do this until at least the end of the year.

Always read the small print about contract length, penalties etc, but it's certainly possible to have Sky Broadband with non-Sky line rental: I have Sky Broadband but with line rental from Primus and daytime calls with 18185. Horses for courses !
