I've bought loads of DVDs (including boxsets), and a fair number of CDs, books, and old PC games from charity shops (and market stalls and CeX, but that's for another topic) over the years. I usually have a wander through all my home town charity shops (there are currently 8 of them) once a week. I don't buy anything with a view to selling it on for a profit, though. I only buy stuff that I think I might enjoy myself.

The prices vary enormously between shops, and I think some of them are way over the top.

As far as CDs go.......... I bought quite a few new between about 1991 and 2004-ish, then I almost stopped buying them completely, but in the last few years I've been buying them second hand. Don't mind taking a chance on a disc when it's 50p or whatever. I suspect that a lot of folk are ditching all of their physical media music, which is great for people like me who still want to buy CDs.

I have no interest in vinyl, though. Never used it much, and I've long since got rid of the few records I owned.

The situation with most charity shops is that in this affluent society, they get donated "too much of everything."

As I mentioned earlier, many are entirely staffed by volunteers with say one salaried employee that supervises a number of shops (I know someone in the business).
The philosophy is "get it out and get it sold" not long deliberations or consultations on the "best price" for something that they got for nothing. What "seems reasonable," is the usual criteria and that's down to the perception of whoever is pricing the stock.

Most have a policy of "half pricing" their stock frequently, just to get rid of it. They usually have a skip out the back for stuff that doesn't sell or stuff donated that's not worth selling.

As you say, many people are getting rid of their CDs. It's far easier to have your library on a memory stick and you can play selections of your choice, rather than keep getting up and down after playing the usual few tracks from a CD and then changing it for another.

Yeah, it's absolutely exhausting having to change the disc.

How many CDs do you actually sit through?
I only ever pick out a few tracks I like on each.

I can play any number of mp3s on stick in the side of a TV. But I can still enjoy the nostalgia of vinyl, in our front room which doubles as my "den," even if it's now on an mp3. My wife is very tolerant of my multitude of hobbies.

I can select any number of tracks at any one time up to the maximum capacity of the wall box in this case 160.

I concede defeat, Riley. I simply have no defence against your oft linked to wallbox.

I've never bought a CD from a charity shop before but I do often browse in CEX. Most of my DVDs & CDs are bought second hand now if they're a couple of years old. I've never had a problem with them. They've all worked perfectly fine.
